Farshad Tavakoli
Started his basic training with Ali Khavarmanesh. He spend several years to learn Radif (repertoire) from Vahid Bassam. He then spend seventeen years to study the authentic styles of Setar with special emphasis on Abolhassan Saba with master Majid Kiani. He also studied musicology in University of Tehran. He dedicated several years to understand various Radifs and original Persian musical scales and Maghams by carefully analyzing old written historical documents. In addition he focused on the styles of Hormozi, Forootan, Dargahi among others. He also benefited from master Daryoush Talai. As a result of such persistence and hard work, Farshad Tavakoli is considered one of the rare musicians that his performance is strongly rooted in the authentic styles. Meantime his music carries subtle features that is reflected in his performances and respected by experts in this field. His major activities include many concerts in Iran and abroad, publication of several lectures and research articles and teaching privately or in major academic institutes for more than two decades.

مقدمات موسیقی را با علی خاورمنش آغاز کرد، و پس از چند سال تجربه های شخصی، ردیف میرزاعبدالله را نزد وحید بصام فراگرفت. همچنین در کنار تحصیل موسیقی‌شناسی در دانشگاه تهران، به مدت هفده سال زیر نظر مجید کیانی بر روی شیوه های نوازندگی استادان قدیم سه تار، با تاکید ویژه بر شیوه ی ابوالحسن صبا تحقیق کرد. تمرکز بر ردیف های موسیقی ایران، شناخت و بررسی فواصل و مقام ها در رسالات قدیم موسیقی، و توجه جدی به نوازندگی استادانی چون صبا، فروتن، هرمزی، درگاهی و دیگران، و نیز بهرمندی از راهنمایی های داریوش طلایی، در کنار یکدیگر، شخصیت خاصی به نوازندگی توکلی بخشیده است. سونوریته، فنون مضرابی و بیان موسیقایی وی در عین حال که در تداوم سنت های یاد شده است کاملا شخصی است. کنسرت های متعدد در داخل و خارج از کشور، مقالات و سخنرانی های تخصصی، و نیز نزدیک به دو دهه آموزش از مهمترین فعالیت های وی در این زمینه است.

The Intimate Sentiments is the title of a collection we are going to release from now on, each as an independent CD. The artists of this series are some sort of selected musicians whom we have asked to produce simple but impossible works; works within the scope of no order, no boundaries. In fact, the aim is to create a work of deeply personal musical expression and taste of the artist without the intention of attracting the audience.
Each time, the result was a big surprise to us. Each new recording had its own artistic expression which reflected the innermost layers and potential capabilities of the music of our time.
We hope that these contemporary musical ‘autobiographies’ bring a breath of fresh air to our music.
