Having surfaced from a 20- year hiatus this year with two new albums, Anoesis continues his restored run of form letting loose a five-track masterclass in IDM, electronica, house and electro on Cyphon Recordings. Showcasing a signature touch crafted across the ‘90s, the ‘Stasislogue EP’ flies the flag for the fact that Howard Dodd has by no means lost the ability to make a dancefloor move. Operating in a far-flung corner of the cosmos, Anoesis was responsible for some truly mind-warping breakbeat and IDM across the ‘90s on labels such as D*Fusion Records and Octopus - releasing tracks that always felt like they were made in another dimension.
 
Continuing where he left off, the EP opens with ‘Track Thirty 7’, a production that could just as easily have come from Mars, as it could Detroit. Glitched out yet driving, conceptual yet considered, it’s got an ethereal urgency that moves limbs with purpose.  ‘Callisto’ follows, part UR, part dream house  - an emotive, eyes closed journey with soaring pads and glistening synths laid over a bubbling beat. ‘May Eleventh’ rounds off the A side and gives a real insight into the modulated mind of Anoesis, a hardware-heavy, underwater electro trip that nods to the deep-sea dwellers, Drexciya. Flip it over to find ‘Space Watch’, a skippy house bumper with a grooving low-end and lunar transmissions hypnotising from the off, before a peak-time, dancefloor-focussed slice of mind-expanding electronica, ‘Places For People’, rounds off the package. Honed in the ‘90s, yet firmly rooted in the present, it’s clear to see that Dodd’s ability to write absorbing, interplanetary machine music with a human heart at its core is as strong as it’s ever been.

Exclusive: Brent - Digital Karma

London-based event-series Gradient launches its label and kicks off the new era with a four-tracker from Brent, which goes by the name of Digital Karma. The Liverpudlian therefore delivers four club-ready tracks weaving himself skillfully through various electronic music sub-genres and styles. 

The EP opens with the title track, a homage to 80s synth-sounds which are combined with an Edith Piaf cameo generating a flamboyant French vibe and guaranteeing the EP an exquisite start. 

Up next is the most housey take on the EP, namely Don’t Call The Dr. The lush 4/4 bassline in addition to the robotic vocals as well as the inclusion of rolling triplets in the track’s lows and the overall rather minimalistic approach turn the track to a magic bullet for the floors.

The B-side starts with Liquid Gold, probably the slower and more melodic version of the A2. Liquid Gold comes in with super sweet sung vocals, a lower BPM as the previous tracks and spaced out elements in reference to the EPs title Digital Karma, as latter always strikes back and here it hits audience hard.

Ultimately there’s (S.O.M.) or the most techy track of the EP. With a stamping yet groovey bassline, its vocoder-led ode to Liverpool and a memorable chord-sequence (S.O.M.) offers another musical facet of Brent, who manages to take his listeners all the way through different (sub)genres yet remains true to his style.

The title track, „City Hopper,“ and „Talk to Me“ were created after my first trip to South America in late 2022, where I visited and played in multiple cities over two months. The track name, „City Hopper,“ pays homage to the lifestyle of hopping from one city to another to showcase my music to a wider audience. „Talk to Me“ was intended to be an opening tool that I could play in my sets to set the mood. I wanted to make some classic house music, approaching it like I used to. I sat down at my MPC Live2 and did what I like doing the most: lining up some drums, getting the loop going, adding some chords and a funky baseline, and chopping up some vocals until it all came together as one cohesive construct that I later called the City Hopper EP. @marcbrauner
