Fight! Your first encounter is easy: On a nightclub rooftop Chun-Li and you exchange a rhythmic beating. She lands a few crashes but you never miss a beat. You're the one setting the tone and outwerq her. She overheats and bursts into flames. Out of her ashes slithers a slimy queen cobra, her head rising in sine waves. The moment you connect eyes, her neck’s skin fans out and the scales reveal another fiercely snatched face, eyes flashing green with every beat. You fear nothing. Rhythmic hissing and pounding. Biting back and slashing forth. Your band whip wraps tightly around the serpent until it suffocates: K.O.! Fight after fight, your consciousness and actions melt into one. You're entirely engaged in the game's rhythmic flow. The repetitive percussions help you hyperfocus on beating your rivals: Punches, kicks, whips, darting thumb drives and shooting oscillographic beams. Dorky mafia clowns, drvg lords and awkward billionaires stand no chance. With each match the difficulty rises, the beat gets faster. You never lose a fight, but the easy enemies are over. Your frustration level increases as you fight against a shirtless muscle raver guarding the entrance to his holiest techno venue: A space rocket. You counter his gate keeping with a choreography of attacks. Unimpressed, he lets out a silent sulfuric fart. You take continuous damage from being heavily poisoned. His rhythmic stomping lets the floor quake, throwing you off balance. You tumble backwards to synchronize with the rhythm again. Your feathery fabric whip and his heavy metal chain whip entangle. You pull him in and stuff horse tranquilizer in his nose. He falls into a K.-hO.le. You step over him into the rocket, ready to launch. In outer space, fast tinny pulsatile bleeping fills strange voids. Inbetween hyperdrives you fight metallic insectoids and dragons inhabiting wet sinister worlds. Will you beat endboss Cynthia and her army of sparkly minions?

Playful and curious, enigmatic and energetic, with a love of small details and grand gestures: Belia Winnewisser’s musical language is personal. Enjoying a piece of her music is like having a conversation with the Zurich musician, listening to an entire album is like a day spent together.

Her first record Radikale Akzeptanz (2018, Präsens Editionen) was released after many years in various bands (Evje, Silver Firs, a=f/m) and studying music and media art at the Bern University of the Arts. After SODA (Präsens Editionen, 2021), her third album The Essence Of released in July 2024 on the Cologne label SPA – a search for the origin of the self in music, and ultimately an open self-portrait. In between, she released two rhythmically gripping EPs, Mother Earth Took Poison In Her Soil (Die Orakel, 2022) and Tid (with Luca Durán, Präsens Editionen, 2023), which draw on her experience as a club DJ.

Her upcoming EP, Mirror, is on the horizon and set for release in April 2025.

Winnewisser finds a balance in collaboration, whether with the video artist Subrihanna, as a composer in projects for theater and radio plays or by passing on her skills in music production workshops for FLINTA* artists – here Winnewisser explicitly opens herself up to the experiences and ideas of others.
