The third chapter in On Board Music’s The Meaning Of Time compilation series takes a different approach. The label engaged its community with an open call for tracks, and then tasked its core, established artists with remixes of each. The resulting, 22-track offering is a sublime snapshot of modern ambient and deep techno, showcasing the label’s richly talented roster and an exciting next generation. As with the previous compilations, all proceeds will be donated to Sea Watch and the important work they do for the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean Sea.

A cairn stacked like a koan in the center of the creek, perfectly still. A vision of my crown chakra, spinning in lavender and white, offered in a flash of instant divinity as I’m coming down the mountainside at dawn. Coming down on molly. The silhouette of the mountain’s sharp ridges neon from morning sun and we descend. A vision shared, a coven of witches seen, when the veil lifted briefly in the middle of the night, under the sparkling river of many-colored stars. A party at 14,000 feet on a gold mine, meditating in the thin air after dancing in trance through the night. Channeling. Ghosts. Speaking in tongues. Letting the Spirit move through me. Rhythm. Moving my arms automatically. Mudras taught to me from no one but Truth, from Source, belonging to no one. Collapsed identity. The illusions lifted. The process of unmasking, of undoing my conditioning. Learning sorcery. Stored trauma shooting out my fingertips, body releasing cathartic every weekend. Endless pain. Endless growth. Endless freedom. This was my life in Denver as I raved through my twenties. And perhaps my most potent memory of all: the rock outcropping, hovering hundreds of feet above the bouldered canyon, our cozy spot. The party--my favorite one, the most sacred--only halfway over. We stopped in our togetherness for a respite, left the treehouse or the dancefloor below where Huckaby or Donato Dozzy or Atom™ or Tobias or Demdike Stare or Erika or Patrick Russell (didn’t realize how lucky I was until it was gone). Whoever was spinning, we climbed up the ridgeside to sit hand in hand, together and alone, to watch the sun rise. As the crackling rays exploded over the horizon, casting peace across the spine of the mountain range, I looked around to see eyes closed. Closed mine. If you spend enough time in the Rockies, they do something to you. The sun coming up was a phenomenon. And not just because we all dosed. The music never stopped, the thud wafting up from below. The frequency, the wavelength, connecting all of us. Techno was where the home was. Is. Seeing each other soul-to-soul, no ego. The way it was. What have we become? Sometimes I’m thick with longing. Colorado is lost, but not lost, its earthen roots forming my core. Planting me, grounding me, so that I may become whoever I was. Whoever I was going to become. Now. Here. This mix is a memory--an amalgamation of memories, an amalgamation of a place and the best parts of my twenties--a gift to myself, to my friends, to you.

Dead Violets Night is the stage name of the DJ and producer who founded El Garaje de Frank. A track by the Turkish post-punk project Rain To Dust served to capture the flavour of the French DJ's sessions in an image. 

Originally from Savoy, but already a key part of Madrid's nightlife, Dead Violets Night took her first musical steps in the world of metal, playing the guitar in various bands. Later, she fell in love with electronic and dark music and swapped her guitar for turntables. From El Garaje, she has promoted the most underground electronic music scene and has attended all kinds of European electronic festivals. Although she started DJing at the end of last year, the pandemic has helped her to dedicate herself body and soul to the decks and make a great selection of EBM, acid, industrial techno and electro. 

Her first sessions saw the light in the medium she helped to found and had a fantastic reception internationally but soon she stared collaborating with other labels, such as Zyrcadian Editions. Her debut as DJ was in the legendary club Specka, and she has show her skills at Killing Time in Valencia. A lover of darkness and dynamic, eclectic sets, you can always find some EBM and acid in her vinyl-only mixes. Without a doubt, there are plenty of dead violet nights ahead of us.

For the final chapter of our podcast series this year we are very happy to welcome Davide Montanari aka Surt. He is perhaps best known for his diligent approach to deep techno which is both surgically precise and unashamedly heartfelt. Davide previously released solo works via Edit Select or Planet Rhythm and recorded mixes for one of our favourite communities - the Korean Oslated - as well as Dino Sabatini's Outis podcast series. 

For this chapter of Introspective Electronics, he delivers a journey that seamlessly and patiently blends his deep techno sensibilities with dark ambient dronescapes, high-pressure hypnotic repetitions, a pinch of tribalism and textural experiments. A walk through a landscape in winter, barren fields and dense forests glistening with freshly fallen snow and each step forward whispers a tale of long forgotten springs buried in the soil below ✨🌚🌝✨

Podcast Series 09 | Surt

Acclaimed UK electronic musician Kevin Richard Martin (The Bug, King Midas Sound) releases a stunningly powerful rescore of Andrei Tarkovsky’s seminal 1972 movie Solaris on Phantom Limb.

In May 2020, British musician Kevin Martin was invited by the Vooruit arts centre in Gent, Belgium to compose a new score for a film of his choice. Having been long inspired by pioneering Soviet filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky, Martin tells us that his 1972 masterpiece Solaris was the “natural choice”. The film is an unattested giant, not only of science fiction and Soviet film, but also in the annals cinematic history. And its original score, composed by regular Tarkovsky collaborator and early Soviet electronic musician Eduard Artemyev, is a magnificent work of haunting majesty, a key element to the film’s brilliance. Martin’s challenge was great: “it was with a certain amount of trepidation I stepped into such large footprints,” he writes.

The results - an all new score entitled Return to Solaris - are breathtaking. The film is intense, psychologically devastating and bleakly compelling. Interweaving themes of love, horror, sorrow, nostalgia, memory and dystopia, Martin’s score expertly mirrors this expansive breadth of psychic weight, from existential dread to heartbreaking poignancy, with immense emotional gravity. Drawn to its “narrative struggle between organic, pastoral memories of a lost past, and the harsh, dystopian realities of a futuristic hell,” Martin employs atonal noise, simmering waves of distorted synthesis, undulating drones and otherworldly, astronomic sound-design to crushing effect. Subtly submerged recurring motifs - reflections of individual characters - rise and fall amidst the fog, occasionally illuminating the doom like motes of starlight, before settling back into the density of space.

Album opener “Theme for Kris'' begins with a shimmering, alien tone, mimicking a disembodied, metallic choralsong that creeps and snakes about an unsettling frequency range. Ghosts aboard a deserted space station. The hissing, technological dystopia of subsequent track “Solaris'' sends evaporating torrents of steam through bulging, clanging, echoing chords, while later on the record, “In Love With A Ghost” revisits these same passages of seething doom, but now refocused into billowing, droning clouds of noise.

Determined that his score should retain the eerie, dreamlike mood of the film and authenticity to its era and origin, Kevin mined his analogue lab for suitable instruments and recording equipment, favouring antiquated, hands-on hardware over computer-based production techniques. With Voorhuit’s help, he acquired an original Pulsar 23 drum machine, created by cult Russian synth builders SOMA Laboratory. Appropriately, much of his rescore is centred around its spectral, strung-out sounds.

The project represents many firsts for Kevin: his first commissioned soundtrack; his first composition to picture; his first work in his new Belgian home after a move from Berlin; his first live performance to film screening. On completion, he performed Return to Solaris to picture over sold out two nights in October 2020, in the beautiful Voorhuit concert theatre of Gent, Belgium. And, with huge personal significance, this was his first public performance of the Covid era. He performed to a socially distanced crowd, many of whom unaware of his existing profile, “which made the rapturous reception and incredible feedback to the performance all the more memorable,” he writes.

Tarkovsky’s Solaris won the Grand Prix Spécial du Jury at the 1972 Cannes Film Festival and was screened for an incredible fifteen years uninterrupted in the Soviet Union. It is placed highly in “greatest movies of all time” lists published by Empire and the BBC, among others. Steven Soderburgh directed a Hollywood remake in 2002, starring George Clooney, and scored by Cliff Martinez.
