Madelyn Byrd aka Slowfoam is a Berlin-based artist working at the intersections of hydrofeminism and neuroaesthetics, an exploration into uncanny interactions between ecology and technology. They are a vital presence within the landscape of modern queer experimentation, utilizing complex digital processing techniques to dream up spellbinding microscopic worlds made up of synthetic sounds and field recordings 🪼

In a tone of their releases, Slowfoam delivers an hour of poised, seductive story-telling embedded in electro-acoustic experimentation and glistening textural ambient, building up into low-slung rhythmical momentum before wrapping up with a heart-warming conclusion 🩵

New Palm 12: Max Ellington

This started out as a mix entirely comprised of pieces from my favorite anime, RahXephon. The composer, Ichiko Hashimoto, is an amazing versatile musician; she can make delicately beautiful songs and then turn around and make something that perfectly encapsulates utter dread.
 
Instead I decided to turn it into an homage to different anime that I have loved over the years, from my initial exposure to the medium to the very recent. Only in the last year or so has it dawned on me just how instrumental anime was in helping me understand who I am, second only to music itself. 

There’s a lot I wasn’t able to include because it didn’t fit the tonality, it was really important for the mix to have a natural flow like watching a movie. It’s broken down into four parts - Dread, Release, Contemplation and Acceptance; ideally the pieces I chose reflect these movements. 

In full disclosure, this mix was something I had been planning for 6 months prior to being asked to make a mix for SEASON. It was a personal project and a labor of intense love, and as I was nearing the completion of planning, I began to wonder where I would be able to put such a mix out. Perhaps the coinciding with the Pisces season was a sign, because right around then was when I was asked to create a mix for SEASON.

Anime is obviously not specific to being a Pisces, but deep and intense emotions are, and both anime and music are two ways I’ve best connected to that emotional part of myself over the years, and this mix is a culmination of that. 

I owe a large amount of thanks to my friend Arley who helped me round out this tracklist, and my friend Phil who also helped. I also have to shoutout some very good friends who are always down to nerd out about this stuff and thus are constant inspirations, Shane, Miah (fellow Pisces), Max, and of course, my spouse Lexi.
