M.A.N.D.Y. vs Booka Shade - Body Language (Angelo Scalici Edit)

This week's Junto was to create a piece of music using the resonant orbits of the newly discovered TRAPPIST-1 planetary system. 

I took a simple approach, starting off by using SoundForge 'Synthesis' to create some samples where the length in seconds was equivalent to the orbital period in days, and the frequency of the sine 
wave was the relative orbit in Hz, using orbit e as A3. I added a sine envelope to create each of these as a slow blob of sound. I then imported into Acid Pro, and laid out the samples. Because the lengths were equivalent to the orbital periods, they automatically lined up as they should. I added some panning (with the innermost planet getting the narrowest pan) and a big reverb. I then exported this as a WAV back into SoundForge, where I pitched it down an octave, applied another little reverb, and then pitched it back up by 5 semitones. All this processing added a little extra instability to the sound.  
I then set up a very simple sequence in the modular using the intervals, and then played that gently over the top with a large reverb to add some variety and space.

Fresh faces Christoph Deckert and Christian Schilgen aka Deorbiting concoct delightfully level-headed string-based music in the Paranorama EP which includes two originals, one collaboration and three remixes. Paranorama is a lofty, majestic string-ridden composition, where sounds bounce like clouds off the fluid production. Synths adorn expansive pads in an overall immersive ambience that enchants and animates. Niko Schwinds remix takes a more dubby approach, while subtly maintaining the initial unrepressed atmosphere. Next up, Kalipo manages to reimagine the track into a riff-heavy, synth-indulging experience. Cara No, a joint effort with Aaaron, unveils a more moody setting, following in the same pensive yet stimulating resonance. On the flipside, Zero Wing showcases a gloomy soundscape with glitched out pads and eerie details. Sunken piano keys add to the melancholy, elevating the multi-layered construction. Kuriose Naturale adds shrilling bits and spiralling loops of impending doom, offering a more dramatic and acid-tinged version of the original.

 ‘Satisfied’ is a slice of sophisticated dance music that nails the sweet spot between headphones and dancefloor. It sees Catching Flies focusing his attention on the dancefloor for the first time with stunning results – ‘Satisfied’ is highly textured, deeply melodic and effortlessly marries live instrumentation (guitars, harps, a string quartet…) with warm electronics. The single consists of a three-track package, including a more immediate Edit and an ‘Ambient Reprise’ which serves as a hazy recollection of the night before. As Catching Flies explains: ‘the tune has so many different layers and tracks (186 to be precise!) and went through various different versions over time… so I wanted to celebrate that.’
