Rebekah Ryan – You Lift Me Up (Hi-Lux Remix) MCA Records 1996.

Having signed Ultra High to MCA, it was natural that they’d want Hi-Lux to remix their other releases, ‘You Lift Me Up’ was another in a series of Piano Pop/Dance tunes that where rife for the Hi-Lux Hi-Energy treatment.

I remember sitting in the office of MCA legendary head of A&R Steve Wolfe when he’d invited me in to specifically sit and listen to the original of this track with him, it didn’t take long to realise there was a very serious vocal involved and I knew exactly what to do with the track with a Remix. This was to be the first of a classic Hi-Lux trademark remix of putting the whole vocal verses in the breakdown to give them maximum space and then let the club have it with a killer riff.

The Hi-Lux remix was an absolute killer of a club track, but I’d realised that it had a huge crossover opportunity and pleaded with Steve Wolfe to have a radio edit done and make that the main release for radio rather than the original mix. The track did hit the top 40 charts with a very respectful position of #26 if I remember correctly, to this day I’m convinced that that chart position can predominantly be attributed to the Hi-Lux club mix rather than the original mix or radio edit…… but MCA had invested a lot in the original and ultimately, who was I to try and influence the track or what Rebekah had wanted.

You Lift Me Up has to be one of my favourite Hi-Lux remixes to have worked on …. Such fond memories of getting the DAT tape of these awesome vocals back to the studio and getting stuck in to taking the track away from a pop daytime radio fantastic pop song into the club belter that it was. Such a fantastic vocalist who never got the break she deserved.
