Emerging Italian producer D3070 shares his name with a type of flamethrower; quite apt given the amount of flame emojis that have been dropped in the comments sections of where his debut release on CYBERDOME has been teased.
Staying true to the Cyber aesthetic, ‘Booster’ is a melting cut of dungeon electro; oozing with bright, neon sludge which - once consumed - takes its hold on the individual by driving them into a dancing frenzy. ‘Voyager 1’ is a dreamier trip; ambient leaning, but with that signature doomed-out funk.
‘Deep Impact’ plays out like an unauthorised lining on a otherworldly space rock; brimming with intrigue, mystery and slow-mo, anti-gravity textures, before ‘New Era’ signals the dawning of a fresh, ethereal start through its scattered breaks and transcendental inspiration.
‘Humint’ finally brings us back down to earth as we venture back downstairs towards the darkness; a fitting start to the young artists back catalogue.

Needs moves into the future of vinyl production partnering with Green Vinyl Records in Holland to produce a 100% recyclable record which uses 60% less energy cost compared to traditional vinyl production methods. This revolutionary step in vinyl history features the production skills of Saoirse, Reptant, Sansibar, Pugilist, LUXE and Hassan Abou Alam.

For Needs 009 we welcome another all-star lineup of producers, established and emerging, from around the world. Featuring room 1 ready techno from one of the scenes leading lights Saoirse; a bass heavy, electro-tech weapon from Melbourne's Pugilist; the cosmic electro baselines of the irrepressible Reptant; an otherworldly space excursion courtesy of Norway’s finest Sansibar; dancehall inflected acid trance from London-based up and comer LUXE; and to round things off some twisted breaky tech-house from Egypt’s latest export Hassan Abou Alam.

THE PROBLEM
With 4.3m vinyl sales in the UK last year (the 12th consecutive year of growth), it’s clear that vinyl is back in a BIG way. But the basic technological principles of record pressing have not changed for a century. While the vinyl boom has been a bright spot for physical media lovers and the record industry alike, pressing vinyl poses a more urgent environmental concern than it did in the format’s heyday. At times, the process can seem almost antithetical to green living. Records are made of PVC, which comes from refined oil and can take up to 1,000 years to decompose in a landfill. Traditional pressing machines are powered by steam boilers that require fossil fuels to generate heat and pressure; the water used is treated with anti-corrosive chemicals in order to prevent rusting, thus creating more wastewater. And that’s just the pressing procedure.

Consider, then, vinyl’s packaging and distribution. The ink that’s used to print cover art and liner notes is traditionally solvent-based, meaning it contains volatile organic compounds that can contribute to the production of ozone. Once the record is encased in a beautiful jacket, it’s then shrink-wrapped in plastic wrap before boarding a gas-burning, carbon-emitting truck to ship. Suddenly the choice to buy physical music shifts from an action that helps sustain an artist’s career, to one that potentially threatens broader sustainability.

THE SOLUTION
In 2019 Needs started conversations with Green Vinyl, a brand new pressing plant based in Holland, who have devised a revolutionary production method which uses injection moulding rather than steam energy, equalling 60% less energy cost than the traditional vinyl production. It also uses no PVC and is a 100% recyclable product, meaning you can dispose of it in your home recycling bin.

The other benefits are that the record sounds better (it has a wider frequency spectrum), it cannot warp, and it also has a longer play life.

The key features of a Green Vinyl produced record are:

In his customary format, Pablo Splice delivers another triad of unusual electro cuts, with an added set of remixes. The originals rely heavily on absurd melodic elements backed by dry, punchy rhythms with a retro / modern feel.

'Maurits Methodz' is a steady workout that features an abstract analog synth riff which progresses by constantly folding in on itself. Ultra clean top rocking beats and weird science atmospheres form the precise minimalist accompaniment to craft a quirky but groovy flow.

'Yeah, No, 4 Sure' continues in identical fashion while taking the absurdity up a notch. With a familiar synth voice, a new set of riffs kick this one off, reinforced by extremely punchy 808 patterns. A tripped-out, robotic pop-lock section is introduced by a chorus of bees. Intriguing melodic themes rotate through an arsenal of psychedelic synth leads, with odd drones making scenic shifts in the background. When it's time to make it weird while keeping things hype on the floor, this cut serves perfectly.

Hitting a more emotional note, 'Sambatronix' is a unique but natural fusion of electro with a latin feel. The emphasis on synth riffs is prevalent, emerging steadily from the bass line, over prominent syncopated beats, erupting multiple times in a wave of lush, cascading melodic fragments. An extended outro allows bold layering of Pablo Splice's distinctive percussion into the next mix.

The mighty CYRK is enlisted for a remix of 'Yeah, No, 4 Sure', and their version is every bit as dynamic and creative as would be expected. This favourite Berlin duo turn heads with every new production. Their punchy, trippy version harnesses all available low end power, topped with sinuous high end intellect.

AD & the Persuader (Alexi Delano & Jesper Dahlback) refashion 'Sambatronix' into a stream-of-consciousness minimal techno burner. A call-and-response exchange of synth leads powers their dreamy version, held fast to a steady arrangement of powerful rhythms and delicate top line percussion.

Closing out the EP, Noah Pred offers something deeply special to the package, tackling a remix of 'Psweetest Taboo', a seminal track from Pablo Splice-Psychodrama EP released last year on UKR Special Series: urbankickzrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/uk…drama-ep

Noah's original works display his penchant for matching a keen, angular melodic sensibility with unusual and deeply textured sound design. Here he applies those talents to perfection, complimenting the Pablo Splice sonic signature with his own characteristic flair.
