It’s my pleasure to present this stunning album to you on Lumina, curated by legendary French techno producer David Jacopin aka Taho. First discovered by Laurent Garnier in 1995, signing two EPs to F communications at the tender age of 19. Over his time this veteran producer has released on KMS, Ovum, Delsin, his fans include Gilles Peterson, Josh Wink, Satoshi Tomiie, DJ Bone, Colin Dale and DJ Deep.

He founded Lumina in ’97 following his debut on Garnier’s F Comm. The label is about creating unique blends of music, narrative and visuals where futurism and mystery adds to the complete sensory experience. There is always a story to be told, sometimes the liner notes are on the sleeve, or the vision is transmitted via an accompanying video. Releases on Lumina have included Ian O’Donovan, Joris Voorn, Sol Ortega, G-Prod, Theobald Ringer, Brian Kage, as well as Taho himself. Supporters of the label include Garnier, Josh Wink, John Digweed, Chez Damier, Joris Voorn, Danny Tenaglia and more. Lumina’s output has been included on comps for Global Underground, MOS, Tronic and the hallowed Nervous Records.

After a lucky seven-year break, Lumina is back with a masterful double vinyl compilation, where eight artists from across the globe bring the finest deep house, warm techno and downtempo, elegantly referencing the old school, but with a forward-thinking futuristic edge. Ian O’Donovan, Taho, G-Prod and Theobald Ringer are no strangers to the industry having released on Tronic, KMS, R&S, Ovum, Cod3 QR, Pokerflat and Bedrock. Sol Ortega is co-owner of Detroit Classic Gallery, a label and collective from Argentina, who has been spinning Detroit and Chicago across the planet at Berghain, Tresor and Concrete. Eddie Merced had his debut on Metrohm, with forthcoming releases on Bush Records and Upon You in the pipeline. Yuki Endo, Planet O and Eric Seti are relative newcomers, but the quality of their productions fits well within this quality collection.

Highlights from this album are the stunning joyous and euphoric ‘Rigel’ by Planet O, Ian O’ Donovan’s massive ‘Constellations’, and the driving beats of Theobold Ringer’s ‘Factual Conjucagsion’.

Paramida returns with her second EP ‘Moonrise VII’, touching down on Love On The Rocks just in time for summer with 3 cuts of hands in the air, good time house, F1 tunnel rave and emotional dream house; her signature take on colourful, dreamy trance-inflected visions of the dance floor in full, untethered effect.

Sailor Moon House, inspired by the cult 90s anime series of the same name, is what would happen if Sailor Moon made house music: beautiful, colorful chaos energy; the sound of a dancefloor collectively nodding their heads, tapping their feet and losing their minds on a Sunday afternoon at Panorama Bar, on an infinity cruise to pure joy. Kawaii! Hypercolor trance clouds break to a shiny new dawn of driving rhythms, cheeky acid bass hooks and searching sonar pings, setting course for a masterclass in feeling good, sunrise filtering in through the blinds, leaving a sea of happy faces and twinking ecstasy trails in its wake. 

Space Ride finds Paramida in heist mode: a high-speed 8-minute car chase that swerves its way through dimly lit rave tunnels in the dead of night, leaving just the acid traces of its heavily chopped trance stabs to electrify the no-nonsense, pounding kick drum and groove workout, punctuated by abrupt u-turns via razor-edged rave corners, leaving the dance floor in the dust. Sampling SYT’s 1995 progressive trance track ‘Drift’ on Chris Hillman’s UK-based label Magick Eye Records, which has been serving up psychedelic trance, deep dub, downtempo and ambient since 1991, this track came about over the course of a year via a random Shazam/Hör-related chain of events that led to the original artists involvement, blessing Paramida’s edit and rework to re-introduce their lost jam to a new generation, with new bells and whistles, maxed out for ‘22. Seatbelts on!

33 is something completely different: 3 minutes and 41 seconds of shapeshifting, heavy-lifting ambient dream house that threatens to build into a massive emotional crying-on-the-dancefloor moment but instead flips gears before dropping you back in to a life-affirming, pure ecstasy bliss, the sound of the warmest, connected chemical embrace channelled into a sublime 221 seconds of being alive.

Originally hailing from Japan but currently living Berlin, SJT is known far and wide for his Teknobuskers project, a hardware DIY dance party hosted with friends and held regularly in 'Max-Koch-Passage’, Berlin. The energy from these dance parties can be felt and lived through his latest ep, ‘GG Allien’.

SJT’s skilful use of mind melting background tape textures and moody pads provide the encapsulating canvas for otherworldly acid lines, driving hardware percussion and enlightening melodies. An ep primed to transcend the listener to a place of communal acidic dance appreciation.

An EP of limbo-inducing squelch courtesy of our good friends Latrec aka Andy Bainbridge and Serious Hots, ft. techno flavoured remixes from Bristolian pal Remotif & our very own Matt Cowell & Johnny Aux as The W.C. Enjoy. 

In the furthest reaches of the cosmos, the intergalactic community gathers for the annual Kutika Limbo finals. 

Reigning champion Latrec draws the first straw and the percussion rolls excitedly as he steps up to the pole. Kutika glides lithely under the bar, tentacles wobbling to the acid rhythm. He celebrates his victory as the crowd chants in a glitchy alien dialect. “Kutika-tika-tika-tika!” 

Second in line, Latrec’s younger brother Dub Mix steps up for his first limbo. Shorter and stockier than his brother, we don’t know what to expect from this one. Once again the percussion rolls, the crowd gasps as his squidgy exoskeleton melts before their eyes, reforming on the other side of the bar - ‘blooooop’. The crowd goes wild “Kut-Kut!” 

Next up is The W.C. Events take a strange turn as they forgo the competition, instead they walk to the stage to sweep the band aside, hijacking control of the instruments. Heavy percussive hits twist spacetime with material melting bass throbs. The crowd goes wild as the fabric of reality collapses around them.  

Last but by no means least is Remotif, a techno unit resembling a giant cluster of biceps stands staring at the limbo pole, chaos erupting around him. The tempo of the percussion rises in anticipation and acid thunder roars in the background. Remotif picks up the bar, blinks, and hurls it off into the furthest reaches of the galaxy never to be seen again.

Lurking beneath the bridges, this was said to be a creature that was never seen by daylight. Perhaps that was because few feared to visit the trenches to find out what mischief it had been causing down there as of late... It was rumoured to live alongside the river which flowed through the old park and the old parts of the city which had become overgrown but for the occasional wanderer looking for something lost.

It was called the Chuffalump, a magical creature who was said to escort people into the outer reaches of the night and lead them in a merry dance of witchy mystery. Some sought to find it and become friends, others feared that it might warp their tiny minds leaving them but a mere semblance of their former selves...

Pigeon Steve is a familiar face amidst the underground music community in Glasgow. This is the first outing on a newly launched record label called Future State and the record has been described as a 'certified trip'. We certify the claim and reckon this one will certainly do well in the small uncertain hours of the morning.

Eddie Merced is one of those artists whose sound speaks on a universal level. The Connecticut DJ and producer has honed a strain of techno and house that matches driving rhythms with richly melodic machine soul. As legendary French techno pioneer Laurent Garnier testified, “Eddie is one of the (too) rare producers these days that are keeping deep, soulful techno music alive.”

The key to the authenticity in Merced’s whole approach lies in the roots of the sound, tracking everything back to its source to understand where house and techno have come from in order to better take it forward. Merced’s life has been immersed in music since soaking up his dad’s love of freestyle and early 80s electro and heading off on his own voyage of exploration. From an affinity for soul, funk and disco through to the full spectrum of electronic music new and old, Merced’s appetite for sincere expression has been fuel for his own sharply-focused music. 

He established R4808n as a platform for his creative vision, framing the epic scope of his synth-rich production with the alluring intrigue of clandestine mysteries both of this earth and beyond. Elsewhere, Merced’s productions have been recognised and carried by scene-leading labels like Upon.You Records and Marco Bailey’s MB Elektronics, Yousef’s Circus Recordings and Brothers’ Vibe’s iconic New Jersey house imprint Mixx Records. His breakthrough release From Within, which also gives his istreem radio show its name, was carried by Gabcat back in 2016. 

As a DJ, Merced has played across the US, in the UK and mainland Europe, bringing a hi-octane energy to dancefloor settings, while his radio shows and studio mixes make space for slower, more introspective sounds that round out his musical identity. At all times, he keeps a handle on that vital deep techno, Detroit-inspired soul element that marks out his music. It’s a cohesive approach which has rightly drawn support from such respect luminaries as Colin Dale, Karotte, Ken Ishii and Claude Young Jr, while Carl Cox famously worked stems from Merced’s track ‘Tri-State Hustle’ during a hybrid live set at Ultra Music Festival 2022. 

True to techno’s origins as a fusion of technology and soul, Eddie Merced’s mission lies in the depth of his expression and the places he can take you - his is deeply rooted music heading into the future, reaching skywards as it hits you deep within.
