Next up on X-Kalay it’s fresh heat from one of the finest among a current generation of prog-inclined producers. Guy Contact’s ‘Out of My Head (Into My Body)’ speaks to a sublime, utopian conception of dancefloor utility; dance music primed to achieve ascension through collective physical experience.

Navigating mystic, offbeat zones, Contact sets out his stall from the start. ‘Out of My Head (Into My Body)’ is as pristine as it is expansive, inducing trance states as trippy flourishes oscillate over driving rhythm in impeccable lysergic style. Then, with another dose of melt-on-the-mind groove, a radiant bliss-out arrives in the beautifully buoyant flex of ‘Sacred Mist’.

Taking its name from a part of the brain associated with emotional processes, ‘Amygdala Tongue Wobble’ propels into fractal introspection with dense, insistent pulse. Finally, ‘Optimystic’ finds Contact channelling new age spirits as he assumes the role of innerzone healer - wide-eyed downtempo to close things out.

Operating at the intersection of deeper techno, electronica, house and electro, Ste Roberts intricate and beguiling sounds have been fascinating dancers for over two decades now.


A Rinse FM resident for over a decade, he first cut his teeth in the fertile grounds of Leeds in a period when it was experiencing somewhat of a clubbing renaissance. Working behind the counter in Tribe Records, his job allowed him upfront access to the cutting edge of house and techno and he soon made a name for himself as a selector. With a growing reputation as a “DJ’s DJ”, he made teamed up with Jamie Russell and Alex Jones to set up the influential Hypercolour and Glass Table imprints before making his first moves into the production world and releasing his acclaimed debut on the formidable Fear Of Flying imprint, before


Moving to London in 2015, he continued his explorations in the electronic underground, quickly gaining a foothold for himself in the capital. His deep, hypnotic, rhythmic sound won him fans far and wide, with gigs ranging from fabric to Studio 338, The Lion & The Lamb and Dimensions Festival in the years that followed. He set up his own labels  STE and STEDIT labels to give himself no-compromise homes for his production output, gaining the support of many an influential DJ in the process, along with his releases on 20:20 Vision, Holding Hands and Hypercolour. 

“I don't generally have any set start point when it comes to making music” he says. “Whether I’m making an electro track or more of a techno roller, that just kinda develops as I'm tinkering around with hardware. The reality is, I've been music collector for over 20 years now with endless amounts of inspirations throughout the electronic music and dance scene, and without trying to replicate this experience I've had it just comes to me naturally. In my DJ sets I always prefer to take you on a journey, with ups and downs, twists and turns but ultimately educating and exciting my listeners with old and new records. I still play records I picked up when I started out 20 years ago—which even then were already a decade old—along with up and coming cuts, and current rare picks.”


The future looks very busy for Ste as he enters a new purple patch in his career, with releases coming on One Eye Witness, Kassian’s burgeoning Faux Poly label, more on STE & STEDIT and a collaboration with Adam Curtain on their new Adam & Steve imprint. What’s more, he’s launched another new label, Private Parts, to further extrapolate his sounds and to support other like-minded artists, with label showcases in the works at some of the world’s finer nightspots.

An EP of limbo-inducing squelch courtesy of our good friends Latrec aka Andy Bainbridge and Serious Hots, ft. techno flavoured remixes from Bristolian pal Remotif & our very own Matt Cowell & Johnny Aux as The W.C. Enjoy. 

In the furthest reaches of the cosmos, the intergalactic community gathers for the annual Kutika Limbo finals. 

Reigning champion Latrec draws the first straw and the percussion rolls excitedly as he steps up to the pole. Kutika glides lithely under the bar, tentacles wobbling to the acid rhythm. He celebrates his victory as the crowd chants in a glitchy alien dialect. “Kutika-tika-tika-tika!” 

Second in line, Latrec’s younger brother Dub Mix steps up for his first limbo. Shorter and stockier than his brother, we don’t know what to expect from this one. Once again the percussion rolls, the crowd gasps as his squidgy exoskeleton melts before their eyes, reforming on the other side of the bar - ‘blooooop’. The crowd goes wild “Kut-Kut!” 

Next up is The W.C. Events take a strange turn as they forgo the competition, instead they walk to the stage to sweep the band aside, hijacking control of the instruments. Heavy percussive hits twist spacetime with material melting bass throbs. The crowd goes wild as the fabric of reality collapses around them.  

Last but by no means least is Remotif, a techno unit resembling a giant cluster of biceps stands staring at the limbo pole, chaos erupting around him. The tempo of the percussion rises in anticipation and acid thunder roars in the background. Remotif picks up the bar, blinks, and hurls it off into the furthest reaches of the galaxy never to be seen again.

The grind was relentless, the world moving at a pace so fast that the spin could hardly hope but keep up. As the clouds passed by slowly overhead, seemingly operating on their timeline, the people down below continued to rush and hurry bound by a constant state of hustle.

It was hard to put the pieces together behind the scenes, why had they all become this way? Bound by the constraints and ideologies which left society in a state of flux.

There was always something to be doing, something to be working towards and something else to be gained from the wicked world of work.

Reformed Society is set to appear on Basic Moves – a record which according to the record label has been a long time coming. As the label puts it ‘some things take time’.
