Hanagasumi Records presents the fifth release, this time you will hear multi-genre electronic music in compilation format from wonderful artists who have their own unique and inimitable musical vision. Many of the artists previously released on labels such as Udacha, Rough House Rosie, Kimochi, Runout, Resonance, Faktura. On the cover you see the numbered minerals of one large gem, the mineral number is also the track number. Minerals come together to create something beautiful, just like the tracks on this album. 

The compilation opens with the instrumental track "Kamerton" by Shine Grooves (@shine-grooves), which combines classical piano playing with atmospheric synth sounds. The second track "Gods Gave" by Seal Bient & Jon'Smu (@seal-bient & @jonsmu) is filled with mystery and melodic sequences that gently fall on electro rhythms. Continuing the journey, we come to the third track - "Caleidoscope" from the legendary band Bipolardepth (@bipolardepth), very fragile and thin sound matter, reminiscent of crystals, is connected with an ambient mood. The fourth track "The Sun Changed To Rain" is the work of two musicians - Michel (@michel) and Shine Grooves (@shine-grooves), the composition is filled with house percussions and magical synth parts, but has a relaxing effect. The last track on side A is "Smelles" by Psor (@userekb), you will hear house rhythms, lots of delay and vocals - first class dub! The second side is opened by the melodic IDM track "Muy Fragil" by Jon'Smu (@jonsmu), atmospheric melodies are combined with broken rhythms and futuristic percussion. The second track "Fabrika" from the live improvisational band Ryabina (@rowanberryspace) is filled with crystal clear sounds, electro rhythm and cosmic chimes. The third track "Kwas" by Ronin (@rnn343) combines a very slow and deep house groove that runs very smoothly through synth sequences. The fourth track "Lionwave" from the mysterious musician Phoboz (@phoboz), is an incredibly beautiful dub techno that slowly leads to hypnosis. The album closes with the ambient track "Runout 08.03" by X343 (@x343) - a loop-shaped synth sequence that can run endlessly in your head.

Hanagasumi Friends I (12" LP HANAGASUMI05-A)

Yekaterinburg musician Andrey Kurokhtin operates in intertwined capacities – producer, engineer, synth and drum machine technician, label boss (of hand-stamped “non-commercial music” imprint Hanagasumi), electronica shopkeeper – but his passions collide in the microcosmic reveries of Shine Grooves. Watching The Breeze collects 13 cuts composed across a decade of activity for an expansive portrait of the project’s signature chemistry of minimalist rhythms and whispered emotion.

Woozy, windswept, and flecked with grit, the tracks zoom in and out of delicate flux, triangulating liquid acid, deprivation chamber house, and the outer reaches of dub techno. Hints of Kompakt, Basic Channel, and glitched radio transmissions flicker in its ether, but ultimately WTB maps a groove shinier and more scattered, lost blossoms from a life behind the lights, attuned to the invisible.

The latest by Yekaterinburg producer Andrey Kurokhtin aka Shine Grooves offers an expansive panorama of the project’s arrhythmic depths and ambient outer limits, beyond the skillful dub techno for which he’s best known. Sequences For Fluttering collects 14 tracks across nearly a decade of home recordings, threading a 54-minute voyage through synthetic woodwinds, cosmic electronica, ASMR breakbeat, new age glitch, and glassy orchestral abstractions.

Taken as a whole, the album effectively demonstrates the subcurrents of the SG soundworld: flickering texture, fractal kinetics, strange yearning, sun-flared haze. An immersive suite of oblique energies and melodies, untethered to notions of dance floor intentionality, let loose to unspool, take flight, and flutter.

'Things That Grow' is a fluid musical project exploring the sonic possibilities of southern African musical bows within improvisatory contexts. On this album, Cara Stacey performs contemporary compositions and improvisations on the umrhubhe and uhadi bows with Shabaka Hutchings (clarinet, tenor saxophone), Seb Rochford (drums), Ruth Goller (bass), Crewdson (concertronica), and Dan Leavers (synths/production). Combining original compositions by Cara and Shabaka, as well as freely conceived improvisations, this recording aims to stretch the boundaries of bow music in an ensemble and create something entirely new. The album is out on 12" vinyl via Kit Recs on Sept 18.

Cara is a South African multi-instrumentalist, composer and researcher. She is a pianist and plays different southern African musical bows (umrhubhe, uhadi, makhoyane). Cara holds a BMus in musicology from the University of Cape Town, an MMus in musicology from Edinburgh University, and an MMus in musical performance from SOAS (London). Cara is currently completing her doctoral research through the South African College of Music (UCT) and SOAS, specialising in the makhoyane braced-bow of Swaziland. A founding member of Inclement Quartet and Pergola, she has performed in numerous ensembles in South Africa, England, and Scotland. She is based between London, Cape Town, and Mbabane.

It all began eight years ago with a copy of R. Murray Schafer’s The Tuning of the World found in a box in a cabin, deep within the Pacific coast rain forest. This catalyst provoked Scott Gailey to draw inspiration from the sublime environment that surrounds his home on the West Coast of British Columbia. This exact landscape had a profound effect years earlier on a group of composers centred around Schafer and Simon Fraser University, including Hildegard Westerkamp and Barry Truax, who banded together as the World Soundscape Project (WSP). Where the WSP was primarily interested in field recording as sound ecology - documenting, preserving, and archiving a changing landscape - Gailey explores the musicality of field recordings through various synthetic approaches, a way to access the ambiguous emotional content latent in the natural world. There is a subjectivity to Gailey’s work, and in that sense it has more in common with the sensual musique concrète of Luc Ferrari, or even the Fluxus tape works of Henning Christiansen, than with the WSP. Despite having roots in this well of thought, Polysensuality is undeniably modern, finding kinship with contemporary works by Sugai Ken, Visible Cloaks, and Meitei, while also dipping a toe in the sound pool created by Haruomi Hosono and Hiroshi Yoshimura. Gailey has previously explored this palette in his duo You’re Me with Yu Su, but here there is more space, more silence, greater extremes, and in this way it is more personal, like a soliloquy rather than a conversation.

MATstudio is a new series focussing on the music being made by Jonny Nash and Diego Herrera (Suzanne Kraft) in their Amsterdam Studio.

MAT records always aim to encapsulate a particular sound palette or sonic “world”. Whilst the mini-album/EP format is often ideal for this, it is important for us to balance these more measured, conceptual works with the spirit of chaos and spontaneity which often inhabits our studio. MATstudio provides us with an outlet for this aspect of our work.

The format, a vinyl record with two long-form compositions, allows us to showcase the range of material produced as a result of Nash and Herrera’s improvisations, experiments and accidents. Many of the fragments are the results of filtering ideas through new production techniques and tools. Some feature friends and collaborators. MATstudio works are an ode to the infinite possibilities that result in keeping a curious mind and a desire to learn.

MAT-SS3 features two compositions, “Crushing Indifference” and “An Inn For Those Not Permitted” and it will be released on vinyl and digitally in late February 2020.
