Hamilton - Schema EP Last seen on Ram tearing up the dance with the mighty ‘Deep In My Heart’ and ‘Rich Kids’, Hamilton has been in studio lockdown working on a whole series of next-level workouts that will be rolling out this June and July. Presented in a unique three-vinyl release schedule with a massive digital package climax, this is, without doubt, Hamilton’s biggest delivery to date. 

‘Push’ is the ultimate motivational message. The perfect way to start this epic series of slammers; Hamilton nods at his authentic rave heritage with rushy, synth blasts and a sexy breathy vocal while an enormous metallic bassline worms and wriggles beneath. You’ll be hard pushed to find a finer balance of laser-gazing and screw-facing this season… 

Like to get sweary and lairy? Head straight to ‘F**k It Up’. A ruthless bassline monster, it oozes sub trouble as the clipped lead bass tones stalk the sharp two-step with true menace. With a rabble-rousing vocal sample on the fills and builds, ‘F**k It Up’ isn’t a suggestion… It’s a guarantee. 

‘Get Together’ is another fine example of Hamilton’s aspirational audio; broadcasting one clear message of unity it’s a sonic kaleidoscope of striding stabs, twinkling arpeggios, euphoric dynamics and an emphatic vocal message. Vibrant andunashamedly positive but laced with plenty of low-end naughtiness, it’s the ultimate huggathon anthem.      

‘Overdrive’ follows. Igniting with instant percussive drama and palpitating haunted synths, we’re soon thrown deep into the sub pit as a slinky-but-savage bassline sears back and forth, answering questions you didn’t even ask. Rolling with a slight twang of techno sensibility, the rises and processed bass glitches give it the ultimate ‘heads down’ feel. In a word: heavy! 

Up next, the turbo-charged ‘Way I Feel’. A stimulating attack of the senses; Hamilton toys with our emotions as he smoothly rolls out a beautiful soul-massaging synth and vocal soaked intro before setting fire to it with an absolute sizzler of a bassline. Spine-tingles all round, this not only showcases Hamilton’s production power, but reminds us of the raw, carnal energy that’s unique to drum & bass. 

‘Brainstorm VIP’ is exactly what you imagine it to be… A rebooted, bareback ride on Hamilton’s breakthrough 2011 smasher. Adding more emphasis on the bass texture and overall weight to an already massive track, if you think the original slammed the dance, this one smashes it. Then destroys it. Then totally murders it. It’s what the term VIP was invented for. 

Flipping the switch: ‘Your Love’ sees Hamilton laying down the slow n’ smoochy vibes for a textbook end-of-night tear-jerker… Strutting on a tight halfstep with weighty kicks, be prepared for a startling array of lead psychedelic bass twirls and low-end melodic motifs. Emotional enough to get the baddest of badmen weak at the knees, it’s D&B at its most romantic. 

And so we reach the grand finale. And what a finale! ‘You Had It’ tips an affectionate nod to the old skool with blow-out vocal hit that will have you racking your brains when you last heard it. Rising and rising with insistent keys, sweeping synths and yet another trademark Hamilton hellraiser bassline, it’s the perfect way to end Hamilton’s biggest release to date.

With further artist success and festival stages across the world, 2014 already stands as a monumental year for RAM Records; now the world’s finest d&b imprint follows the success of Andy C’s Nightlife concept with the launch of the label’s new compilation series, RAMlife. 

Mixed by label stalwarts, Loadstar, RAMlife showcases the very best contemporary releases from RAM, providing a glimpse into the genre’s evolving sounds courtesy of both established figures and the new breed of drum & bass stars that RAM prides itself upon.

RAMlife contains upfront tracks from RAM’s own bassline deviants DC Breaks, as well as the dark and tenacious compositions of Frankee; all names featured serve as an affirmation of the independent label’s ongoing prominence. Recorded in The Upbeats’ studio and mixed by mastering engineer Stuart Hawkes (Amy Winehouse, Rudimental, Disclosure, Katy B), SSXUB sees these bass music brothers-in-arms unleash four bin-rattling cuts that draw on their twinned production talents.

Shapeshifter and The Upbeats solidified their in-studio bond while they were working together on the Shifter’s chart-topping, platinum-selling album Delta and, as The Upbeats’ Dylan Jones explains, their latest partnership on SSXUB has allowed them to create a set even greater than the sum of its parts.

Shapeshifter and The Upbeats’ armies of supporters will have a chance to find out what SSXUB delivers when the EP rams speakers and dancefloors on Friday 12 September, spearheaded by ‘Bloodstream’ dropping on 22 August.

Deep in solitary lockdown, Hamilton has been crafting these next cuts with the meticulous precision. These two tracks present the perfect backdrop for his comeback, presenting him as a veteran artist who effortlessly combines the famed 90s vibe with contemporary production. 

And after the ongoing success of his Schema EP, as well as the huge reception to his release ‘Fire/Be There’, this is a welcome return. 

With pent up aggression and pounding breaks, ‘Feel the Fury’ rolls out first ominously. Cracking high hats and quick-fire percussion adds a layering that helps carry the record’s forward motion. Alongside a bassline that coils, and then lashes out over a plunging drop, you’re thrown between the snap, crack and whip of a hugely intricate composition. Hamilton is back… And he’s here to re-educate you with his unfaltering skillset. 

On the flipside, ‘Track 8’ is an innovative slice of drum & bass which is both fun and drivingly relentless. Bouncing subs, coupled by distorted synths take you through elevated note patterns of gradually building, musical imagery. It’s a steppy riddim, one which doesn’t completely crash on impact but instead is creeping in its intensity. It’s Hamilton at his most diverse, yet again proving the versatility in his craftwork.

With another stunning delivery from Hamilton, 2015 is setting a precedent. One which the producer is sure to ride out into the future.

Something which makes Trendkill Records stand out is the attention to detail which their roster affords to their music. The London based label, spearheaded by DJ and producer Prolix, has continued to push the paradigm of dance music throughout his career on mainstay imprints such as Playaz, Metalheadz, Ganja Tek, Virus Recordings and Bad Taste and this is something he’s carried into his own imprint. Just like Prolix’s own music, Trendkill sits at the darker end of the drum & bass spectrum and in these shadows comes through some of the most technically adept producers throughout the expanse of dance music. An outfit which fits this prototype is Task Horizon, who from Switzerland have brought forward a collection of tracks that have solidified their place within its murkier world.

Their forthcoming single ‘Thought Crime’ and ‘Adaption’ is no different and Task Horizon join the Trendkill army for the first time with this release. It’s easy to see how Task Horizon are so highly regarded across drum & bass, with both it’s A-side and reverse providing an insight into how the producers have graced the back catalogues of labels such as Eatbrain, Cause4Concern and Blackout Music.

‘Thought Crime’ is the first of two tracks, beginning the single with a cutthroat expedition of the monikers which Task Horizon have perfected. Winding up on quickly flitting note arpeggios and straying hi hats, a final tapped introduction pulls you into its first explosive drop. With each drum pad building then slowly distorting until they begin to break, Task Horizon let you know their conjoined might on this heavyweight track.

With a return to their neurofunk roots, Essex based Druid Records returns with their 30th release and it is a special one. “Scout 22” heads up the EP with his original track “Cybernetic Synthetic”. A raw, dancefloor influenced track with relentless kicks and a pummelling wonky bassline with elements of sci-fi which is a key passion of the Artist that has featured on Program and Citrus Recordings.

On remix duties, they brought in Brazilian powerhouse producer “Dunk” formally part of the Jam Thieves. Fresh off his latest release on the mighty Dispatch LTD, Dunk truly showcases his sound that has caught the attention of many top labels in the scene and provided the artist with consistent releases all year long. The deep rolling track is a great take on the original and a perfect fit into Druids ever growing back catalogue.

Rounding off the EP, Druid have enlisted the neurofunk maestro “Barbarix”. The UK based producer has had releases on labels such as Renegade Hardware, C4C, Methlab and many more true innovative labels.
Bringing the funk back into Neurofunk, Barbarix drops a full throttle remix of the original letting the scene know he’s back in business and isn’t going anywhere. A heavy metallic snare punches through a groovy but gritty bassline and switching it into a bassline designed to cause absolute carnage.

With one more release left for the year, with a top vocalist, that is a bit different to the usual from the Essex imprint, this release is set to show Druid is back and setting their place back firmly within the scene we all love.
