🎵 For a record label, compilations have always been the most challenging endeavor. It's a blend of numerous artists that need to be strategically placed in a tracklist, adhering to a conceptual scheme. Moreover, there's meticulous work involved with each track, be it mastering, mixing, or coordinating revisions with the artists themselves. After days of finalizing track versions and packaging them into a release, what you see is just a glimpse of the effort, manifested in this release titled "Various Artists vol. 3".

The cold, sharp light of the full moon wrapped each of them in its bitter grasp, tendrils of the deepest anger and regret encircling them as the shadows from the dense branches of the grim forest of their surroundings. Their old friend lay prone at their feet, the gun that ended that precious spark of consciousness still smoking in Lenny’s hands, his weathered face cast down, cold eyes staring at the carnage of his making. Blood flowed darkly from the head wound, a growing treacle puddle reflecting the moon above in its metallic embrace, each of their faces around it mirrored darkly in that slowly expanding pool of their brother’s end. The curse that had escaped his lips as he realized the betrayal was seared into their ears, the final glance spiked through with heartbreak entwined in deepest hate burned into their retinas. But for all their regret, their patriarch had spoken, made himself clear… the family is violence, but it is not the twisted pleasures that he had chased, and the family line, when crossed – is the very end of consciousness.

L 33 cracks open 2018 with his inimitably heavy style of ultra funky and future-focused neuro on home imprint, Eatbrain. Featuring four brand new selections from Burr Oak, their forthcoming ‘Feel the Truth’ EP once again solidifies why the duo were brought into the Trendkill imprint. Title-track ‘Feel the Truth’ opens the EP and begins with a deceptive intro, one which lulls you into a false sense of security before building into an almighty first breakdown. ‘Gokui’ follows a similarly epic soundscape, with static like bass slabs underpinned by rising synthesis, slowly dropping you into the magnetic drums of Burr Oak. ‘Carotide’ then begins with rhythmic drum, with a robotic, ominous spoken word sample taking you out into the deep. Soon your submerged by the track’s weight. Sliced and diced hooks cut through the chaos and they take you along for the ride. ‘All Alone’ is the final offering and its one which further highlights the complexity of Burr Oak’s skills. With strung harmonies opening up its first sequence, it’s a rolling freight train of chaotic patterns, one dipping back and forth between its growling underbelly.

Together these tracks present another climatic release from Burr Oak. They’re unafraid to cut open their repertoire and prove they’re a force to be reckoned with. One that Prolix and Trendkill have taken notice of.
