What a year it’s been for Loadstar. Exceeding every possible expectation with their debut album ‘Future Perfect’ in May 2013, the duo won critical props and appreciation from every possible corner: from The Guardian to Mixmag, Hype to High Contrast, MTV to Radio 1… Love for Loadstar has been overwhelming. 

Naturally the love goes both ways. Here the Bristol duo provide an early Christmas reboot bundle, bringing 2013 to a fittingly heavy climax. Six remixes in total (two digital exclusives from a heavily subscribed RAM remix competition) the package features D&B reversion’s from some of the label’s most talented artists. 

First up is a remix from Loadstar themselves. Flipping the switch on their electro-bass burn-up ‘Losing You’, they ante up with pummelling drum dynamics and a bassline that screams bona fide murderation. True subversive heavyweightism. 

Up next, ‘Need You’. It began as a turbo-charged techno monster. Now, under the careful spell of Frankee, it’s a rush-coated, star-gazing roller built on a solid bed of bass textures. Twinkling and terrorising in equal measure, Frankee once again shows why he’s been rated as one of drum & bass’s brightest prospects. 

Those hungry for jugular-focused damage should jump on DC Breaks’ take on ‘Give It To Me’. Riddled with insane levels of energy and attitude, this is strictly peaktime business right here, confirming the duo’s current do-no-wrong status. 

Rene LaVice is also on chop-slapping form with his incendiary rub. Processing the demonic dubsteppy intentions of the original into a rocket-powered stepper, it has the sound (and impact) of someone setting fire to entire firework factory and running off at full speed. Genuine audio damage. 

Finally we have two digital exclusives. Swotting off the competition from hundreds of fellow hopefuls, both Ality and Abstr4ct are more than well-deserved winners. Ality adds oceanic sheet metal textures to the bass that’s neatly countered by tight weaves of dreamy synths while Abstr4ct takes the original’s distinctive paranoid riff and galvanises it with an iced out, steppy riddim and an array of system-blowing glitches. It’s so heavy Andy C included it on his recent ‘Nightlife 6’ mix. 

Six remixes, six reminders of Loadstar’s raw power. The perfect way to end a future perfect year…

Under the radar, and with the minimum of fuss, something deadly has been released into the D&B scene. It was late 2014 when the “Let Me Fly” EP signalled the arrival of the Erb N Dub and Skope team-up to Technique. Since then, they've loosed a highly-targeted selection of musical shots, each time adding another unpredictable twist to their sound. Until this release, identifying the formula they're working to has seemed an impossible task. Now, though, the truth has finally become evident. There is no formula.

“Altitude” arrives with a deep and humid environment, conjuring shades of nineties atmospheric jungle with a disconcerting element of darkness. Vinyl crackles vie with a sharp edge of digital distortion to maintain an incessant mood of tension. And the constant shifting and writhing of the rhythm takes the normal interplay of downbeat and upbeat to a new height of complexity. Even the apparently-metronomic snare, which is the closest thing to a still centre the tune has, modulates and reforms as the track progresses. This is simultaneously addictive, dazzling and baffling, a pocket universe in which small-hours ravers can lose themselves.

Meanwhile “Drummer” adds a totally different complexion. Weaving a nexus of dense jungle undergrowth in the intro sets the tone. Then, as the title and punctuating dialogue samples suggest, this builds into a tune that's all about the percussion. Bass squelches and sweeps provide a bed for driving tribal kick drum bombardments, pitch-shifting snares and variations in the second half of the track that are straight out of the showing-off-at-drum-programming handbook. These beats have everything the most technical edits aficionado might desire, but delivered with a funky dancefloor sensibility that keep this tune aimed squarely at the rave.

It's clear that Erb N Dub and Skope share a passion for rhythmical and musical innovation that supersedes any thought of genre conventions. They've both worked in multiple styles, both inside and outside of the boundaries of D&B, blurring the lines between live and synthesised, studio tools and musical instruments. So, when they team up to drop a tune the only thing you can predict is that you'll want it cued up at the other end of your crossfader.

Night has fallen, the threat of extinction riding on the edge of its transition. Decaying and contorted faces of the undead leer from the shadows, twisted limbs reaching from the darkness towards the eternal signal - driven to crush its subversive broadcast and extinguish the final beacon. A single being stands in their way - the strongest of his kind, the last of a genetic line extending into a derelict past with an imperative to preserve the future. An arsenal of sonic weaponry residing within the lines of his palms, drawn forth through the ancient forms manifested by long-dead masters. His swift movement amongst the shuffling army is efficient - acute strikes snap limbs, raw concentrated power crushes bone, low-frequency techniques leaving little behind from the weight of brutal molecular disruption. With the rising of the sun, only he remains – the broken dead lying scattered and without motion – the focused power of his fighting form has prevailed… the signal is preserved.

The eyes of the living only greeted each new day because of the immortal techniques that had now been passed to them, the new guardians of the beacon, masters of an art now evolved – watching, waiting, perfecting their deadly art… ready for the return of those beyond death.

Following up the immensely successful Karate LP from core Eatbrain artist L 33, comes a deadly second approach to some of the most blinding tracks from the album - reimagined by a collection of apex predators in drum & bass.
