Alice Notley is the author of more than twenty books of poetry including The Descent of Alette and Mysteries of Small Houses. She was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and winner of the L.A. Times Book Award for Poetry. In 2001, she received an award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Poetry Society of America's Shelly Memorial Award. Born in Arizona, Notley grew up in California. She was an important force in the eclectic second generation of the New York school of poetry.

A fly rests on the wall. Showing on and off camera. Just another day. Now, 40 minutes makes an ocean fall apart. It splits. Just another century. Every day feels like a Sunday. An untitled emotion is left in thick captions: their thickness changing the temperature of words. Like a kiss. Just another.

Η Κατσαρίδα δεν είναι μία. Η Κατσαρίδα είναι πάντα Κατσαρίδες. Εκείνη την ημέρα, η Κατσαρίδα σηκώθηκε από τον καναπέ ιδιαίτερα κουρασμένη. Γνώριζε ότι ο Φρόιντ είχε την ιδιοφυΐα να αντικρίζει κατάματα την αλήθεια και να την προσπερνά γεμίζοντας στη συνέχεια το κενό με δικούς του άχρηστους συνειρμούς. […] Η Κατσαρίδα ένιωθε ότι ο Φρόιντ θα τη θεωρούσε σύντομα θεραπευμένη, αλλά δεν ήταν έτσι τα πράγματα, και θα συνέχιζε τη θεραπεία της για μια αιωνιότητα υπό τους Μπράνσγουικ, Λακάν, Λεκλέρ.

Τέλος, ήξερε ότι βρισκόταν στη διαδικασία να αποκτήσει ένα πραγματικό όνομα, το Γυναιρίδα, ένα όνομα ακόμα πιο δικό της από το δικό της, αφού πέτυχε τον υψηλότερο βαθμό μοναδικότητας στη στιγμιαία σύλληψη μιας γενικής πολλαπλότητας: Κατσαρίδες. Ήξερε ότι αυτό το νέο και αληθινό όνομα θα παραμορφωνόταν και θα γραφόταν λάθος, θα μεταγραφόταν πάλι ως πατρωνυμικό. […]

In her keynote lecture, Boyer discussed the book, which reflects on her experience of breast cancer while deconstructing the gendered, capitalistic regimes that shape cancer treatment and patient experience, bridging a poetics of pain with steely critique.
