The aim is not to simulate music by algorithms, but to give a sonic impression of the structure of the morpho-cellular automata.

The 'pure' structure of the automaton might be distracted by the instrumental interpretation of its algorithms.

The Sound Box offers more than 500 different morpho-cellular automata and its sonifications. All the algorithms have a visualization too.

A visualization of the sounds is added as the label of the track.

The first specification of the track is the name of the algorithm, the second, the number of the 'instrument'.




I'm mostly a fingerpicking guitar player who dabbles in a bit of 5-string banjo and mandolin. I’ve just released my first album of instrumental music on my own Yellowroom label. I was going to call it a solo album, but alongside myself on guitar and banjo, I’m joined by a very talented (and generous) group of friends.

As well as this I play in a few bands: ‘The Colour of Whisky” are still quite a new 4 piece. We’re very much into vocal harmonies with some guitar, piano, banjo and flute and we sing songs about the sea. They’re not all about the sea, of course, but it does seem to be a recurring theme.

I also play in a duo called ‘Doghouse Roses’. We’re just putting the finishing touches to a third album, but in between this and starting the band in 2005 we’ve played a lot of shows around the UK and central Europe. We’ve been on TV a couple of times too.

Sometimes I get asked to play a few shows or go on tour with another band… almost like moonlighting but without the secrecy. The Willard Grant Conspiracy asked me to play guitar on 2 European tours in 2007 and 2009, and Ive contributed guitar and banjo to albums by Nick Garrie, Katarina Juvancic and Dejan Lapanja, The Willard Grant Conspiracy and Brian Hughes among many others.

HER CROOKED HEART is the new name; the new music of Rachel Ries – multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer, hired gun, singer. Her Crooked Heart’s first release, To Gentlemen (CD & 7” vinyl EP), hits the ground spinning May 5, complete with Rachel’s own limited edition artwork and featuring members of Bon Iver & Field Report.
 
Along with numerous and diverse collaborators through the years, Rachel has proven herself ever-curious to expand her sound, her scope, and sail on past the confines of ‘singer-songwriter.’ After all, sometimes what the heart wants is a syncopated horn line and a string section; a choir of angels and a bass synth, leaving exaltation and devastation in their wake.
 
But one thing has remained true since RR’s first homespun release: her sly and compassionate voice, excavating the depths of an all-too-human heart, armed with levity and a pen. It’s the messy humanity that’s of interest here. The trying and failing; the loving and losing and loving again. The choosing to be brave even when you’re shaking in your tattered boots.
 
So please, make welcome: Her Crooked Heart. She’s been here all along.
