ਰਾਜ ਜੋਬਨ ਬਿਸਰੰਤ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਏਹੁ ਮਹਾਂਤ ਕਹੈ ॥
In power, youth and Maya, the Lord is forgotten; this is the greatest tragedy - so say the spiritual sages.

ਆਸ ਪਿਆਸ ਰਮਣ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਏਹੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਭਾਗਵੰਤੁ ਲਹੈ ॥੧॥
Hope and desire to sing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises - this is the treasure of the most fortunate devotees. ||1||

ਕੀਰਤਨ ਗਾਇਨ ਦੇ ਵੱਖ ਵੱਖ ਪੜਾਅ ਹਨ।
          ਸ਼ਾਨ: ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਪਰੰਪਰਾ ਅਧੀਨ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਚਉਕੀ ਦੇ ਆਰੰਭ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਰਤਨੀ ਜਥੇ ਵਲੋਂ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਚਉਕੀ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਸਾਜ਼ਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਸਬੰਧਤ ਰਾਗ ਦੀ ਸੁਰ ਰਚਨਾ ਦਾ ਵਾਦਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਤੰਤੀ ਸਾਜ਼ ਵਾਦਨ ਪਰੰਪਰਾ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਇਸ ਸੁਰ ਰਚਨਾ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਬੱਧ ਗਾਇਨ/ਵਾਦਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਚਲਤ ਸ਼ੈਲੀਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਸਥਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਤਰਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕੀਰਤਨ ਦੀ ਪੇਸ਼ਕਾਰੀ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਕੀਰਤਨੀਏ ਵੱਖ ਵੱਖ ਸਾਜ਼ਾਂ (ਰਬਾਬ, ਦਿਲਰੁਬਾ, ਸਰੰਦਾ, ਤਾਊਸ ਆਦਿ) ਉਤੇ ਇਸ ਸੰਗੀਤਕ ਧੁਨ ਦਾ ਸਮੂਹਕ ਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ ਵਾਦਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
          ਮੰਗਲਾਚਰਣ: ‘ਮੰਗਲਾਚਰਣ’ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਾਬਦਿਕ ਅਰਥ ‘ਇਸ਼ਟਦੇਵ ਦਾ ਆਰਾਧਨ’ਹੈ। ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਦੇ ਅੰਤਰਗਤ ਹਰ ਇਕ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਪ੍ਰਸਤੁਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੀ ਅਰਾਧਨਾ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਰੀਤੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ। ਮੰਗਲਾਚਰਣ ਦੇ ਅੰਤਰਗਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬਾਨ ਦੀ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ ਬਾਣੀ, ਸਲੋਕ ਆਦਿ ਦਾ ਗਾਇਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਵੇਂ:

ਡੰਡਉਤ ਬੰਦਨ ਅਨਿਕ ਬਾਰ ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਸਮਰਥ।।
ਡੋਲਨ ਤੇ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇ ਕਰਿ ਹਥ।।

ਮੰਗਲਾਚਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਬਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਗਾਇਨ ਇਕ ਤਾਲ, ਚਾਰ ਤਾਲ, ਆੜਾ ਚੌਤਾਲ ਆਦਿ ਤਾਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਲੰਬਤ ਠੇਕਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਇਸਤੇਮਾਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
          ਸ਼ਬਦ ਗਾਇਨ: ਮੰਗਲਾਚਰਨ ਉਪਰੰਤ ਰਾਗਾਤਮਕ ਵਿਧੀ ਅਨੁਕੂਲ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਗਾਇਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਧਰੁਪਦ ਅੰਗ, ਖਿਆਲ ਅੰਗ, ਸ਼ਬਦ ਰੀਤ ਅਤੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਿਚ ਦਰਜ ਗਾਇਨ ਰੂਪਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਬਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਗਾਇਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
