Louis McCoy is a master craftsman in every sense of the word. A legend of a human behind much loved local underground institutions the likes of Inner Varnika and For Home Use Only, and an expert on the tools be it in the kitchen or on a building site, Louis first and foremost is a passionate music obsessor with a savant like ear for records that cut deep. 

Sometimes found under the cheekier guise of hndsm, Louis seriously knows whats up when it comes to 90s music from the UK, and focusses his attention here on the massively influential sound of trip hop that he grew up nodding his head to as a teen. Treating us to near-on three hours of raw and dusty underground classics from the roots of the 90s Bristol trip hop movement, we find ourselves deep beneath the murky waters of the reggae and the shoegaze infused, to moments of heavy, emotion packed atmospheric soul and a healthy dose of the all out experimental. One for the OG chillout heads, this really is a trip like no other!

We're very pleased to share with you this long, saucy mix straight from the soul of Louis McCoy, founder of renowned Inner Varnika festival and all-round Naarm music aficionado. 
As Louis writes:

"I've been subconsciously compiling this mix for years now, but it's made a lot more sense during the last 6 months. I think it's important to remember to feel something, whether it is pure joy or overwhelming melancholy, I wanted to cover both aspects in this and everything in between. A lot of the music in this mix really means a lot to me, from my mother's jazz influences to my teenage years on a strict diet of emo trip-hop. I wanted to make a soundtrack from literally putting the kettle on first thing on a cold Sunday morning to hopefully take you through to a semi-productive day in the kitchen with someone you love. To be honest, just enjoy it, any way you can."

I recorded this mix from my home during the hard-lockdown. I didn’t set out to record a mix that day, it was a very spontaneous idea. I managed to record this mix in one take. I think it was a true moment of meditation for me. 

I (like most people) lost almost everything that provided me with security this year. It’s been a strange and disorientating time. Basically, just completely overwhelming.

Music played a subtle but important role in helping me cope during this time. Generally, in times of low mental health, I gravitate towards music that I would consider as ‘emotional’. Sometimes I just want something to relate to. Something to validate me. Often music does this for me. Music also has the power to transport me to a time and place. Music is nostalgic, and in a year like 2020, all I seemed to do was to daydream about where I would rather be. 
 
The music in this mix was a way for me to transport to another place in time. A sunny Saturday morning somewhere else.
