Tropicalish mix

This week we have one of our favourite Sydney DJs Le Brond. Not one to regularly put mixes out, we were excited when he agreed to put one together for us exclusively because he’s in full support of our cause. Part of what we're trying to achieve with Let The People Dance is encourage people to learn from others and also those that do know to  mentor and share their knowledge with the new comers. So in this theme of sharing knowledge we also asked him a few questions too about his journey around music and into DJing: 

LTPD: How did you get into DJing? 
B: Probably the same as most people got into DJing, going out 4 nights a week and getting inspired by the amazing parties happening at the time. For me the late nineties/early naughties were magical, I discovered electronic music, parties and clubs like Mad Racket, Tweakin, The Underground, Sublime on Pitt St, in an era that felt like there were no rules. Greg Lambert (Pepperpot) was my partner in crime in Sydney 2000 and he was playing all over the place and always talking music, this got me thinking about music in different ways. In 2003/04 I bought my first pair of technics and started doing the laps of the numerous record stores around Sydney each Saturday. 

LTPD: How did you learn and get started? 
B: I practised. A lot. It (mixing vinyl) never felt natural or easy (it still doesn’t), but always fun. A local DJ named Jools, who used to work in one of the record stores I would go to just offered one day out of the blue, to give me some pointers and I took him up on his offer. What a character! Then a few years later Declan Lee, Matt Aubusson and Ben Korbel encouraged (or more like ‘Dragged me by the scruff of the neck’ - I was terrified)  me to play one of their parties, Minimal Fuss with Akufen. 

LTPD: What does music bring to your life? 
B: Music has brought me so many friends it’s incredible. I have travelled the world in search of music and I have travelled the world to play music (Berlin, France, New Caledonia). I don’t consider myself a particularly creative person, but what creativity I do have I guess I express it through the music. 

LTPD: What inspires you about music?
B: The unique music that comes out of various cities around the world and how the history of those cities influences that music. 

LTPD: What parties around the world inspire you? 
B: I really like what the Lessizmore guys have been doing over the last 10 years. Sun waves Festival just seems to get better and better. But the local guys are killing it in a hugely over regulated and legislated city. The SASH boys, I mean week in week out. The Mantra Collective for pushing a fresh sound with killer venues. Mad Racket because Mad Racket, their 4th birthday was my first and opened my eyes to eclectic…rad shit! Their uncompromising attitude to music over almost two decades is inspiring. 

LTPD: Favourite place to play? 
B: S*A*S*H Day @ The Greenwood

LTPD: What went into making this mix? 
B: Wax, CC & Dry, One hour 12 minutes and a whole lot of second guessing. 18 tracks of stripped back housey stuff from producers I think have been killing it over the last few years like Suolo, YYY,Herck and more. Some of the tracks in the mix listed here:

2 Reworks of @crazyp's "Like A Fool", one of the highlights of their latest album "We Dance Talk Sing". Crazy P and Fred have a long history of remixing each other, from the Crazy P Remix of "Friday" to Hot Toddy's Remix of "Don't Nobody" feat. N'Dea Davenport and Fred's Remix of Hot Toddy's "Down To Love". On the flipside, his Remix of Roach Motel "The Night". The Vocal mix came out on a Limited Vinyl Only release on Get Physical. To close the EP, Fred Remixes an old friend from Montreal, Franky Selector, with his track Windswept Sand Dune, from his forthcoming album, showcasing a slower tempo and different production quality than his usual material.
