'wandering began its life as a short study that I had composed for myself to play in the early months of 2018. At the time of writing, I had become increasingly interested in experimenting with double-stopped harmonics on my viola and had also recently been introduced by my teacher, Paul Newland, to John Cage's 'String Quartet in Four Parts', which employs a gamut technique and has a strong sense of verticality throughout. I started to arrange a gamut of my own of various achievable double stops, with a combination of normal stopped notes, and artificial and natural harmonics. While continuing to experiment I was led to detune the C-string down to a B-flat which suddenly opened up the piece, and subsequently the piece took shape quickly after, firstly as a short study and then as a full-length piece. wandering also marked the beginning of my search to create music based around a 'non-climactic form', where the music aims to unfold in a meandering nature, with no particular destination in mind'
