KOREA TOWN ACID is unflinching, focused, absorbed and engaged in sound and all vibration. Jessica Cho has been creating buzz in Toronto’s downtown dance music community with her live, improvised electronic music performances and multi-medium DJ sets over the past nine years. A classically trained pianist with an intuition for improvisation and the sonic universe, Jess’ music transcends the dance floor into the astral strata. Her sound palette is vivid and technicolor; cerebral and kinetic; a timeless fusion of raw, fearless creativity and focus. Cho has proven her versatility in dozens of Toronto venues performing solo, and with former live house duo CHOBO. She has released a variety of tracks on labels such as Arachnidiscs, Archi-textures, Toy Tonics from Berlin, Secret Jams from Bulgaria, and her solo EP on Toronto’s Mikita Skyy.

Holed away in Cosmic Resonance’s basement studio/headquarters in Toronto, Jess improvised freely over eight straight early January days in 2018. The result was a free jazz, techno-addled synth orchestra too rich to know its own wealth of nuance. Slowly the layers began to peel away. Glimmers of diamond-encrusted synth rays started peaking out from behind massive bass-lined clouds. Mountains, then valleys, rivers, trees and a full landscape appeared. A world was discovered and it is MAHOGANI FOREST.

Damián Schwartz’ ''Existence Itself'' is a compilation of well composed melodies that evolve, while gliding over the backbone of dance floor rhythms. Whilst containing five tracks, this record feels and breathes like a full length. ''Public Domain'' shows Schwarz' knowledge of jazz composition. The opening track contains chord progressions that are unusual in popular music, but should soothe a more trained audience. Nevertheless, Public Domain is a positive composition that should appeal to selectors worldwide. 

''Heavy Weather'' is dripping with modulated chords, thoroughly selected bits of FX, and otherworldly arps. Deep rhythmic drum patterns guide the track into alterations of mood and a warm bath of intelligent melodies. ''Tyner'' is a funked-out piece of work that sounds like a perfect PULP records. It's this track where Schwarz shows that he is up there with the giants of modern day funk sounds. Large synth basses growl through the palette, and an oozing lead synth serves as the recognizable element. For the B2, a beatless version of Tyner is added to this package. This should be a welcome and fun element for selectors to play around with. ''Former DJ, Now Selector'' is a breathing, positive track that’s the perfect ending to a versatile work like ‘’Existence Itself’’.

After just 6 months since first seeing Big Yawn perform, we are thrilled to welcome them to the Research family. A compelling prelude to their debut album "No!" due out in late 2019.

Over six years the Melbourne-based group has evolved, with members of the band running various releases through label and collective Fallopian Tunes. As of 2019, Big Yawn had become a four-member music group, motivated by a history of studio production, prolific collaboration and quality hangout time.

The groups freshest effort 'Skin Rat/Thomas' captures the band performing live in the studio, and it's typical Big Yawn: fat and punchy low-end bass; drums and live drum processing; delay fx samples; thick syrupy synths. 'Skin Rat' is a hyperbolically dubbed out, tongue in cheek, magnetic blend of UK garage, footwork and breaks. And 'Thomas' takes cues from a slightly damaged post-punk sound, amplifying a brittle and sinister type of atomic porn-funk.

Limited to 200 copies. Hand numbered and housed in a screen-printed sleeve, artwork by Julian Hocking.

The music of Maltese producer Rudi Agius aka Jupiter Jax has always felt as much defined by mood as movement, guided by the “specific melancholy” of specific melodies. His latest long-player skews even more cinematic, conjuring twilit gardens and crooked city streets, windswept and warped by memory: No Such Thing. Inspired by notions of escape and the unknown, and threaded with dexterous live instrumentation, the album treads vibrant hybrids of moonrise electronica, downtempo dream house, and Balearic breakbeat, brooding but breezy, a Mediterranean midnight of the mind.

Agius speaks of his songs in terms of intuition and inevitability, how and where they transport the listener. These twelve tracks slip between senses and spheres, interplanetary but placeless, noir glimpses of ghostly coastlines and reflective reveries. Flutes, trumpets, voices, and percussion contour his club designs with a tactile fluidity, jazz accents reflecting off rain-slicked marble harbors, the wakening dawn still worlds away.
