exquisite warps - An informal radio show by me, islas loosely inspired by the surrealist drawing game called “cadavre exquis” or “exquisite corpse”. You know, the one where you draw a head, fold the paper over, and pass it on, eventually revealing a cumulative chef d’oeuvre of many hands (and many heads, legs, arms, etc). I’ll be lining up eclectic selections of music with no apparent link other than that they are on the same imaginary sheet of paper: the same one-hour radio slot. Whether digi releases or scratchy (potentially) warped vinyl, we will hop, skip, and jump through genres and timelines, through dusty old buys and shiny new digs. Surprising correlations may occur. Mixing probably won’t occur. Witty banter, suave radio voice, stuttering, and mumbling are aaaall to be expected.

Ojoo FM w/ Islas (closing at Ojoo 21.07.23)

Late last October I was invited to play a warm-up set for the inaugural weekend of Horst Club. The perfect occasion to prepare something special, I took a stroll through my record collection and went deep into the stuff I’ve had for ages but was maybe too dark or strange to play. Starting off slow, this set winds through some kooky obscure percussion, intermittent bleeps, cosmic sparkles, apocalyptic voice samples (‘it’s the end of the world’, ‘can we change the future’).
My main aim was to arrive at the final track by Deg aka Circadian Rhythms… and after 2 hours and 22 minutes my mission was accomplished! As I handed the controls over to Marco Shuttle, he said it was a very ‘British’ selection… I guess I can’t help myself. 😀
Shout-outs to the Horst team and Planet crew for their support.

Attention music lovers ! This is an ultra ultra special mix, since it is the long-awaited islas Basic Moves podcast. Ailsa Cavers aka islas and I started and ran the record label and club nights together for the first four years. As time takes things and things take time (and life rolls on (and off) and on) our paths have brought us back to sharing friendship, culture, and music again :)

islas also Ailsa is a creative centipede roaming the fields of art, design, music, literature and so much more. Originally from Reading (UK) but relocated to Bordeaux (FR) in the early 2000s where she studied at Ecole Des Beaux Arts before landing in what is now her hometown, Brussels (BE). Together with a bunch of like-minded souls she started the electronic music collective Planet, ran a music pop-up called OP-a with her bff Dana Kuehr…overall islas is a busy, gifted artistic bee that never stings.

Sooo to the music: 2 years in the making, this mix is a story of carefully selected, funny and open-minded club music dug up in the garden of electro house, quirky tech house, Detroit techno, and millennium minimal. All with an islas twist and topped with an English, French and Belgian sauce. Praise the lovely, steezy Ailsa alias islas forever !

@basicmoves is a Brussels-based "outsider club music" label run by Islas and Walrus. Next month they will give birth to their fifth release, a techno 12" which comes from a mysterious NYC producer. They also run the experimental Gems Under The Horizon night, the next edition of which takes place in September.
