I Know You Worry

“Trials, Troubles, Tribulations” is an American bluegrass gospel song written by Estil C. Ball. Here it is performed by Sounds of the South, a project featuring Justin Vernon (Bon Iver, Volcano Choir), Sharon Van Etten, Megafaun, Matthew E. White, and Fight the Big Bull. The project, organized by Megafaun, initially appeared at Duke Performances in North Carolina and MusicNOW in Cincinnati, Ohio, and subsequently traveled to Australia's Vivid LIVE at the Sydney Opera House.

This is the first song from the compilation MusicNOW: 10 Years set for digital release on March 10th, 2015, just prior to the 10th edition of this eclectic music festival of the same name founded in 2006 by Bryce Dessner of The National. MusicNOW Festival set out with a mission to present the best in contemporary music, offer artists an opportunity to take risks, commission new work and attempt innovative collaborations.

The 16 track live album highlights festival-only surprises like Fleet Foxes leader Robin Pecknold playing the traditional song “Silver Dagger” for the first time, the debut performance of Grizzly Bear’s “While You Wait for the Others”, the premiere of Sufjan Stevens’ “The Owl & The Tanager”, as well as collaborations featuring Owen Pallett, Justin Vernon, Sharon van Etten, Tinariwen and Dirty Projectors.

“Many of my most significant memories as a musician have taken place in Cincinnati during the MusicNOW Festival over the last 10 years, “ says founder Bryce Dessner. “When we started, we were driven to create an intimate music festival that was as much a creative refuge for the artists as it is for the audience to partake in intimate and rare performances. We have celebrated works in progress and new commissions, new collaborations and detailed music of all kinds regardless of genre or popularity. “ 

Dessner is widely known as the guitarist for The National. Those a little more in the know are aware of Bryce’s work in performance projects (such as The Long Count) and classical composition (including his work with Brassland label artists Clogs). MusicNOW was founded as a way for Bryce to explore all facets of his artistic interests and has served as a collaborative laboratory that provides a friendly and supportive audience for internationally renowned artists. Through the years, Dessner has guided MusicNOW to become the premiere event for blurring the imagined lines that divide musical genres.

Nine months have passed – have fallen like red autumn leaves to the ground –since I first heard Albert af Ekenstam’s solo material.

During this time Albert has, amongst other things, released two singles on Kning Disk (”Walking” and ”Angel Liz”), acted as a warm up act for The Posies and Bear’s Den, moved from Gothenburg to Stockholm and appeared in prestigious Swedish music magazines such as Sonic and HYMN.

And I, in my turn, have listened and listened again to his music. Over and over I’ve lost myself in his melancholy guitars, grandiose arrangements, heartfelt voice and poignant lyricism. I’ve also studied; discovered that the Estonian indie rock band Ewert and The Two Dragons included Albert’s song “Falling” on their second album ”Good Man Down” (I Love You Records, 2011) ...

What days and nights!

On the 14th of October Albert of Ekenstam’s debut album will meet its expectant audience. “Ashes” is its name and the outstanding label Kning Disk will release it. Singer/guitarist Sumie Nagano (whose self-titled album on Bella Union is a must for all who love unique voices), drummer/keyboardist/producer Filip Leyman (who, together with Albert, make up the post-rock constellation Tempel) and trumpeter Max Lindahl (known from a number of jazz bands) have all helped Albert bring it to fruition.

What a record it is!

Like Elliot Smith (rest in peace) and Damien Jurado, say, Albert is a very brave and straightforward singer- songwriter. His melodies and lyrics are like uncensored and infinitely beautiful letters – without euphemisms and false chords they let you know what’s on his mind. At the same time they’re universal – if you’ve loved and lost you can relate to them.

They also – also! – start your internal movie projector. With “Ashes” on the stereo and with eyes closed memory fragments, glowing emotions and pure dreams fly through your soul. That Filip’s production (which you’ve heard on Anna von Hausswolff’s two latest albums) is both intimate and grand at the same time makes this personal cinematic experience even more sensational.

Great art. What more can you ask for?

Albert af Ekenstam is here to stay.

I look forward to spending many years in the company of his solo material.

Bold, white cliffs adorn the coastline of South East England, its encompassing winds and ambient calm permeate Isobel Anderson’s new single Flint Shingle. The jagged rocks that scatter these beaches hold evocative memories for Isobel and with their sharp edges, a map of her self-discovery is carved into the chalky cliffs.

Flint Shingle is evidence of Isobel Anderson’s growing songwriting prowess, with a conscious effort to develop the production and instrumentation on the record. Isobel’s textured vocals conjures a haunting ambience, she explains, “It is sort of a love song, if only with a nostalgic, almost regretful, sentiment. The idea is that the landscape acts as a sort of sobering force, a marker of myself and what I am now.”

Despite returning to her birthplace of Sussex to write the album, Belfast is now home for Isobel, and the new record was recorded in Northern Ireland’s Millbank Studios. She has amassed over 17 million Spotify streams, as well as consistent radio play across the BBC network and The Guardian’s Music Podcast. Highly regarded for her mesmerising live shows, Isobel has put on thrilling performances at festivals up and down the country, including Glastonbury (Acoustic Stage) and The Secret Garden Party.

The first single from Isobel Anderson’s upcoming album, Flint Shingle is a symphony by the sea.

«Anywhere Else is a song about anxiety. Not the panicky, all-consuming kind that often results in a severe physical reaction, but a smoldering and quiet sort of anxiety, a sort of uncomfortable buzzing in the body that never quite leaves you be. It took me many years to understand that this also is a form of anxiety. It can be relatively quiet, but it's there - always. This has had me in a soft grip for a long while, and I wrote Anywhere Else before I understood what it really was that I was experiencing. I thought it was normal to feel a bubbling sense of fear almost all the time. It can make me have a hard time deciding seemingly small things like what I'm going to eat, where I'm going to go on a walk, what coffee shop I'm going to go to, what I should wear, what I should do with my day, etc. It's a constant that I've felt for most of my life, without really understanding it or believing it to be anything but ordinary.  I've decided to release Anywhere Else at this time as it feels extra potent for me at the moment, with so many of us feeling a lot of uncertainty and fear about what's happening. I hope it can provide some comfort.»
