Since 2020, Konstantin Baum has built one of the biggest and fastest growing wine channels in the world on YouTube with his entertaining and educational videos. On his channel he tastes everything, from discount wines to a 159-year-old bottle, and takes the viewers on a journey around the wine world. In this session, Konstantin will share his experiences with the platform and will show how to gain traction on YouTube or how to use YouTube to get your message across.

About the Speakers
Konstantin Baum MW is Germany’s youngest Master of Wine, an entrepreneur, and an educator. He runs the innovative online retail company baumselection.com, importing artisanal wines and distributing them throughout Europe. He is always searching for the next big discovery like the Domaine Chevillard that he recently found before it became the discovery of the year 2019 by La Revue du Vin de France. In 2019 he received the Future 50 award as one of the world’s greatest talents from the wine, spirit, and sake industries. His mission is to “make the world taste better”, improving the selection of wine in the on- and off-trade, and improving the ability of people to taste and appreciate wine. He is also very active on social media: His YouTube channel is the biggest wine channel in Europe with more than 71,000 subscribers and he communicates regularly with his 25,000 followers on Instagram. He also runs the wine program of one of the best Hotels in the World – the Brenners-Park Hotel in Baden-Baden – and he is the European Ambassador for the California Wine Institute. In 2015 he became the youngest German Master of Wine ever and he appears in the media and contributes to magazines.

Miriam Lee Masciarelli, Brand Manager of Masciarelli Tenute Agricole, was born in Ortona in 1989. Gianni Masciarelli and Marina Cvetic’s daughter, Miriam Lee showed a lively and curious nature since her childhood. In this session, media expert Erica Duecy will survey the American publications and creators covering wine, sharing strategies and tactics to help brands and companies gain earned media placements. Erica has worked as Chief Content Officer and Editor in Chief for multiple wine and spirits publications, and as Digital Editorial Director for some of America’s largest media brands. As such, she has an insider’s perspective on how to pitch and work with the media most effectively.

Erica Duecy is an award-winning content strategist based in New York, who has led digital editorial programs for several major consumer publications, including Architectural Digest, Saveur, VinePair, and Fodor’s Travel. On the wine trade side, she was the founding editor in chief of SevenFifty Daily, and developed the data and insights practice BevAlc Insights for Drizly, America’s largest alcohol delivery service. Most recently, she led the content team at Pix, a wine discovery platform. A WSET III-certified wine educator, she writes the wine newsletter Bottle Service, highlighting sustainable wines in unexpected ways. Pricing, for fine and luxury wines, is always a complex topic. Whereas for more “commodity” or everyday wines, where pricing is a function of the what market will bear, pricing for fine wines has many embedded messages in it. It communicates where the brand is positioned (or desires to be positioned) in a regional and global market.  It sends a message to consumers about the winery’s value proposition to them.  In this session, we will explore both the art and science of fine / luxury wine pricing and what pricing communicates to the marketplace.

About the Speakers
Peter Yeung
Peter Yeung (pronounced “young”) is a leading wine business consultant, developing strategic business plans and innovative marketing plans for the wine industry.  He is the author of the book “Luxury Wine Marketing” and the host of the XChateau podcast.  He was previously Vice President of Strategy & Business Development at Realm Cellars in Napa and Kosta Browne Winery in Sonoma, managing the allocation systems and business analytics functions. Peter holds the WSET Diploma as well as the CIA’s Certified Wine Professional designations.  Prior to wine, Peter led Strategic Marketing, Market Development, and Sales for a clean technology company in Silicon Valley and was a management consultant with McKinsey & Company. Peter also holds a MSc from the London School of Economics and a BA from the University of California, Berkeley in Economics and is based in San Francisco.

When a crisis occurs, decisions need to be made immediately, such as who should we notify? Who will respond if the media reaches out? What should we post on social media platforms? Companies can prepare by evaluating the crisis process, team, tools, and resources they have in place. About today’ session:
In order to communicate effectively with wine consumers, one must first understand human behaviour and accept that before someone is a wine consumer, they are a consumer. The wine industry too often fails to understand that making wine accessible is not about stratifying wine based on quality, but instead about appealing to a consumer’s (ie. individual’s) need to feel that they are benefiting from their purchasing decisions. All wine apps and data relied on to analyze wine buying behaviour rely on past purchases and predominantly well known wine labels that have wide distribution. The result is a narrowing and homogenization of the types of wines in the pool either recommended to consumers or relied upon by the wine industry to make decisions about consumers.  But if the actual intent (as the wine industry likes to message) is to encourage consumers to explore, try and drink better (understand that quality and price are not mutually exclusive) then the wine industry needs to not just change the manner in which it communicates with consumers, but in many ways needs to return to the manner in which it communicated with consumers 20-30 years ago. The wine industry is in many ways its own worst enemy.

Gurvinder Bhatia is the editor-in-chief and publisher for Quench Magazine – North America’s longest-running and Canada’s most widely distributed wine and food publication. Although he has written for Quench for over two decades and been on the editorial team for the past 15 years, Gurvinder purchased the magazine in 2021, and is committed to the magazine’s evolution to be a much truer representation of our society. Gurvinder is also the wine columnist for Global Television Edmonton, an international wine judge and the president of Vinomania Consulting. Gurvinder was the owner/founder of Vinomania wine boutique (opened in 1995, closed in 2016), which was named on numerous occasions among the 20 best wine stores in Canada. In addition, Gurvinder was the wine columnist for CBC Radio for 11 years and is certified by Vinitaly International Academy as one of only 15 Italian Wine Experts in the world. Gurvinder is a recovering lawyer and in addition to his law degree (JD), he also earned his Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) with honours. In 2015, Gurvinder was named by Alberta Venture Magazine as one of Alberta’s 50 Most Influential People.

Marianna Velenosi was born in 1993 to a family of winemakers in the Marche region, more specifically in Ascoli Piceno. Since her childhood she has been used to live in the vineyard and she was raised in the winery by her parents Angela and Ercole Velenosi, founders in 1984 of the winery of the same name. After graduating in Business Administration and completing a Master’s in Marketing at Bocconi University, Marianna began her career in the Castel Group, specifically in the Nicolas distribution chain in Switzerland. She worked initially as Marketing Assistant and later as Product Marketing Manager in Geneva, where she strengthened relations with the group’s suppliers and increased services to end customers.

Editor and Publisher of Wine & Spirits since 1986, Joshua Greene began drinking wine with meals during a summer in Galicia, Spain, at the age of 13. After graduating from Princeton University in 1981, Greene pursued a career in magazines, focusing on the management of special-interest publications. His work with Wine & Spirits began on a consulting basis, eventually leading to his purchase of the magazine in 1989. Greene has traveled extensively in the wine regions of Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, Portugal, Italy, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, and all the major wine regions of the United States. In addition to his duties as editor and publisher, Greene serves as the critic for Napa Valley, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, Portugal, Rioja, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. He also writes feature stories and commentary for each issue of the magazine.

Stephanie joined Wine & Spirits Magazine as Tasting Director in 2013 and became Italian Wine Editor in 2016. She spends a significant amount of time each year visiting Italy’s wine regions, tasting with producers and researching articles about their practices. Stephanie holds the WSET Diploma in Wine & Spirits and has worked in the wine retail and restaurant sectors, including five years as Wine Director at City Winery in NYC’s SoHo district. She previously worked in textbook publishing as an editor and marketing manager in Minneapolis, Chicago, Austin and Tokyo.

We use all five senses to take in 100% of the information we experience in life. Eyesight comprises 85-90% of this information. Why? We will discuss and attempt to answer this question during this session. Sensory literacy is the ability to be able to take in data from all five senses, parse that data, and make logical conclusions. We will explore sensory literacy.
Wine is a beverage that we all think we know and love. But when have we had the opportunity to taste wine without eyesight? In this educational and entertaining presentation, Dr. Hoby Wedler, Wine Educator and Ph.D. chemist, will walk participants through how wine is a near perfect example of the intersection of art and science. When we think about art and science, we tend to separate them into separate buckets in our minds. However, they are extraordinarily similar and have an exceptionally fine intersection between them. Wine straddles this introduction brilliantly and this presentation will explore this concept along with many more by considering both scientific and artistic aspects of grape growing, wine making, and wine tasting. Guests will be blindfolded and asked to prime their aromatic vocabularies with a series of aroma samples prepared by Hoby and his team. These aroma samples define olfactory vocabulary words, much like a dictionary provides definitions to words in written and spoken language. The experience will conclude with a tasting of four wines where we will smell, taste, and analyze the four wines in detail as a group.

According to the United Nations, by 2050, 25% of the World Population will be Africans. 2050 is in 28 years and most of us and the wineries we represent will still be alive. What’s our plan to develop a relationship with this market? The African wine market session will serve as an eye opener to quite an obscure market with the intention of giving the participants the right tools to enter or develop an existing presence on this very important market for the present and the future. For the present, Africa’s wine market represents one of the fastest growing geographies. A major contributor to this growth is the rapid rise of the middle class in major markets like South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya.

Monteiro Deslandes graduated in Business Consulting and Business Law from the Faculty of Law of the University of Brescia, with specializations in Marketing and International Trade and Financial Markets, areas in which he has always been particularly interested.

Nicolaas Wilem Smit was born and bred in Paarl, the heart of the Cape Winelands. He joined the wine industry at the age of 19. While working full time in the Industry, Nico dedicated himself to expanding his knowledge both in Marketing and Sales, by obtaining a National Diploma in Marketing and Sales at Boland College and BComm Degree in Business Marketing at the University of South Africa. He recently obtained a Diploma in Wine through Cape Wine Academy, ensuring he stays efficacious.

Soraiya Ladak is a WSET Level 3 certified Sommelier, and Managing & Sales Director at The Wine Shop Kenya. The Wine Shop is a family run business that has been in both the Kenyan and Uganda markets in East Africa, dealing in the fields of Wine importation, distribution, and travel retail for over 20 years in both Kenya and Uganda. The Wine Shop is also a premium wine retailer, and an exclusive Wine Bar and Restaurant with an active e- commerce platform.

Vannessa Koko Djaba is the CEO and owner of VDB Consultancy and Trade Ghana Limited with interests and investments in Fashion and Clothing, Real Estate, and the Food & Beverage Industries.

Victor Ikem is the founder and director of Drinks Revolution Limited. He was formerly the National Brand Manager in charge of Campari Group business in Nigeria and the General Manager at Wine & Things Limited, Nigeria.

Akintola Temitope (Temi) started his first business in Nigeria at the age of 17, grew it until when he ran into troubles with the regulatory bodies in the country abandoned it at the age of 26 to follow a career as an Engineer in the Oil and Gas Industry. Currently Temi is the Area Manager for Mediterranean Europe and Africa at ZONIN1821 where he and the team are responsible for the growth of the business on the continent. Temi is also responsible for ZONIN1821’s e-commerce business worldwide.

Alberto Orengia was born in a family with a passion for wines. He was educated in classical studies and spent most of his youth between philosophy books and varsity rugby. From a young age, Alberto had the chance to travel around Italy and be exposed to its varied wine regions. A keen curiosity towards China and the Far East led him to earn a degree in Oriental Studies from Venice University, and subsequently a MSc in International Business from a leading business school in Nancy. Alberto began his F&B career in London, and later moved to Shanghai where he studied and worked for seven years with a chance to gain hands-on experience in the Chinese market. His  true passion ultimately led him to join the wine industry as a full-time professional. He spent nine years building Asian markets for a leading producer in Valpolicella and in 2020 he joined one of the oldest and most respected winemaking families in Toscana, the Frescobaldi, as head of APAC markets.

Born in Verona in 1959, Andrea Sartori represents the fourth generation of owners of Casa Vinicola Sartori, the winery founded in 1898 by Pietro Sartori. After high school, he moved and lived in the United States, where he finished his studies and had his first job experiences. When he moved back to Italy, he started taking care of the commercial and the communications departments of Casa Vinicola Sartori, focussing at first on the domestic market, and later on foreign ones. Since 2000, he has been the President of Casa Vinicola Sartori. Besides taking care of the commercial aspects of the company, he is also in charge of the strategic vision of the business.

In 2002, like wine producers, book publishers and authors largely relied heavily on traditional critics and reviewers. Today, they also have TikTok, Instagram and peer reviews on Goodreads and Amazon. The #Booktok tag has been used over 39,000,000,000 times. TikTok influencers are now becoming more important to book publishing than most classic reviewers. Barnes & Nobles shops in the US now have BookTok shelves. Top Instagram book influencers, @everlastingcharm,  @myfriendsarefiction and @hayaisreading all have over 100,000 followers, far more potential book buyers than are ever likely to read a traditional newspaper review.
Wine in China has adopted this shift more rapidly than in the west. Wang Shenghan, aka Lady Penguin, a 33-year-old leading wine influencer, has built an e-commerce platform with revenues of over $35m. But it is not just influencers. A Vivino marketing campaign can be more cost effective today than promoting a Wine Spectator score.
Many in the industry are uncomfortable with these trends, but ignoring them may be a mistake. Former award-winning author and critic and now industry analyst, Robert Joseph, takes a level-headed look at the rapid way wine communication is changing, reveals the findings from new research, and ways many producers may need to adapt.

Robert is a wine business consultant and an editorial consultant for Meininger’s Wine Business International, which he helped to launch in 2006. In 1983, after living in Burgundy for five years, he launched Wine International magazine; set up the International Wine Challenge; became wine writer for the Sunday Telegraph and wrote The Wine Lists, the first of his 25 books. He has chaired and launched over 50 wine competitions in Asia, Europe and the UK. Robert has been in Who’s Who since 2013, and awards he has received include the Jacob’s Creek ‘Golden Vine’; ‘the Best Wine Guide in the World’; the Glenfiddich (twice); The Wine Guild of the United Kingdom Premier; the Marques de Caceres. He regularly appears on television and radio, and has lectured at the Wine & Spirits Educational Trust, Burgundy and Sonoma Wine Business Schools. In the past year Amanda McCrossin has gone from having no TikTok presence to now over 150k followers in the wine niche. What was once a platform for kids, has now evolved into a billion-dollar marketing tool with an estimated 50+% of users now over the age of 30. The powerful TikTok suggesting algorithm has not only allowed her content to be seen, but be seen by the right audience. As a result, she has been able to not only help educate and demystify wine for a very wine-curious sector, but also move hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of wine through recommendations in her videos. But TikTok today is where Instagram was 5 years ago and while many brands from other sectors are beginning to recognize and even capitalize on the marketing power of the app, it is still very much a blue ocean for the wine world. The clock’s ticking and those who take advantage in these nascent stages will be poised for success.

Amanda McCrossin is a certified sommelier, wine personality, and TikTok/Instagram/YouTube creator. As the former Sommelier & Wine Director at PRESS Restaurant in Napa Valley, Amanda worked with the world’s largest, deepest restaurant collection of all Napa Valley wines in the world. During her time the wine program thrived; garnering nominations, accolades, and awards from nearly every major publication and outlet in food, wine, and hospitality. She has been featured by Food & Wine Magazine, Food Network, San Francisco Chronicle, on the cover of SOMM Journal and most recently by Wine Enthusiast who named her a Wine Star nominee for ‘Sommelier of the Year.’ Today, Amanda is widely considered an expert in Napa Valley wine and regularly sought after for media appearances and speaking engagements including the Aspen Food & Wine Classic and Premiere Napa Valley. Oscar Farinetti (full name Natale Oscar Farinetti) was born on the 24th of September, during harvest time, in 1954, an excellent vintage for wine in Alba, the capital of the Langhe, by mother Bianca from Barolo, and father Paolo from Barbaresco. He lives on the tip of a hill, among his vineyards. He founded Unieuro (electronics) and then Eataly (food). At the end of 2020 he launched his third major project: Green Pea, a huge department store entirely dedicated to high quality and design non-food products, but at the same time sustainable because built in harmony with the earth, air and water. He owns several farms where he grows and processes organic products. He has received two Honoris Causa degrees, has written various successful books and holds lectures around the world. His specialty consists in being able to describe in a simple but suggestive way how to create a project, tell his idea of what marketing is and define the actions necessary to successfully face the future. Through an innovative vision that is based on rules and feelings, poetry and mathematics, moves and human relationships. Oscar donates all the revenues of his lectures to two non-profit foundations; the Mirafiore Foundation that deals with spreading literature among ordinary people, and Earth (Eataly Art House) that deals with spreading art among ordinary people.

Born in 1985 in Marsala from a family long dedicated to winemaking, Pietro Russo graduated in Viticulture and Winemaking from Conegliano Veneto and holds a Master’s Degree from Bordeaux. His career includes working periods spent in Bordeaux and Languedoc, Andalusia, New Zealand, and Piedmont, where he has developed a long hands-on experience in winemaking and an insatiable passion for wine.
Since 2010 Pietro has been working for Donnafugata, where he has the opportunity to produce wines from the most compelling appellations across Sicily, such as Etna, Pantelleria, Vittoria, and Contessa Entellina. In 2020, together with Gabriele Gorelli MW and Andrea Lonardi, Pietro revised the Italian chapter for the New Sotheby’s Wine Encyclopedia. He participates annually in several international wine competitions as a judge.Pietro is also a candidate in the Master of Wine program, having passed the tasting part of the exam in 2019, and currently studying to achieve the famous two letters.

In 2012 he became COO of Bertani Domains, now Angelini Wines & Estates. Lonardi is VP of the Consorzio Tutela Vini della Valpolicella, sits on the board of Unione Italiana. Abstract: 

Wine communication has always aimed to ensure visibility and reputation, thus allowing growth in terms of volume and value. While wine brands have increasingly sought visibility and reputation in recent years, the traditional players who can skillfully meet this need have significantly decreased in number. At the same time, the amount of easily accessible content on corporate social media sites and channels has grown exponentially. Unfortunately, these types of content rarely acquire visibility, thus creating little added value for the brand. So, can we talk about a global wine PR crisis? What kind of strategies can be adopted to handle public relations in a timely manner?

Francesco was born in Alba and is the owner and CEO of Well Com, the largest Italian wine communication agency. He has contributed to the international development of some of the most famous Italian brands, working for Protection Consortiums, large companies and boutique wineries. Co-presenter of the podcast “La retroetichetta”, he has developed a strategic methodology called identity-centered design and carries out academic research and mentoring for agri-food start-ups. After graduating with honors in Economics from Bocconi, he worked on financial market infrastructure in the London Stock Exchange group in Italy, England and Mongolia. For the past 10 years, he has lived between the Langhe and Milan. In addition to gastronomy and travel, he is passionate about personal growth, music and design.

Case in point: In this book we see her escaping from a serial killer, spending time in one of America’s most notorious prisons, visiting concentration camps, and telling off famous spirit producers. Yes, there’s joy, loss of unconditional love, Nina Simone and dirt collected in jars as an incredible expression of terroir. It is her coming-of-age story linked to her subject, wine, how she has championed the wines now taking the world by storm. Heralded editor and master storyteller, Felicity Carter is charged with interviewing Feiring. In the session, Carter will explore what it takes to overcome wine media controversy, tell a good wine story about wine, and champion the underdogs until the wine world sits up and takes notice. Come along and find out the power of storytelling – and why the wine world needs to embrace greater transparency if it wants to resonate with modern drinkers.

Journalist and essayist Alice Feiring was proclaimed “the queen of natural wines” by the Financial Times. Feiring is a recipient of a coveted James Beard Award for wine journalism, among many others. She has written for newspapers and magazines including The New York Times, New York Magazine, Time, AFAR, World of Fine Wine, and the beloved winezine, Noble Rot. She has also appeared frequently on public radio. Her previous books include Natural Wine for the People, Dirty Guide to Wine, For the Love of Wine, Naked Wine: Letting Grapes Do What Comes Naturally, and her controversial 2008 debut, The Battle for Wine & Love or How I Saved the World from Parkerization. Alice lives in New York and publishes the authoritative natural wine newsletter, The Feiring Line.

As an owned communications platform, social media offers brands the opportunity to control their message, engage directly with their community, and measure performance. Kristen Reitzell, SVP Communications & Digital Marketing at Jackson Family Wines, can give attendees a breakdown of the social platforms that are critical to U.S. consumers and how to use them to grow your business, from content creation to amplification (advertising) to community management. Kristen will discuss the importance of these owned channels for both large and small brands, and the value of meaningful and impactful content. She will discuss how to optimize content creation for a U.S. audience as well as working with influencers. Kristen will also touch on how impressions can lead to improved discoverability to drive awareness, attract new consumers, and ultimately, sell wine.

Can A Wine Brand Sold in Grocery Stores Ever Be A Luxury Product? Selling wine at major retailers is great for profit margins, but if you’re sold in the grocery store, can your wines also be sold on the wine lists of top restaurants? This session will show the following:
1. Marketing spend focused on luxury has allowed Champagne brands to sell both at major retailers and be on the lists of top restaurants.
2. Price is not enough to ensure a wine can exist in both spaces.
3. For the most part in America, unless you have a large marketing budget you have to choose, grocery or the restaurant, you can’t have both.

Since founding the publication in 2014, Adam has become recognized as an authority on how to make the drinks world accessible to everyone and speaks regularly about the ever-evolving media landscape. Prior to founding VinePair, he was the head of growth and marketing for the news and politics publication Tablet Magazine. He is an adjunct professor at the Columbia School of Journalism, teaching courses on digital media, and the winner of the Left Bank Bordeaux Cup American Wine-Tasting Championship. He holds an MBA from NYU Stern with a specialty in Marketing and Entrepreneurship and a BA in Journalism from Emory University.
