James Foxx in the OSO:DEN #005

Their name says it all – Masters At Work. For well over a decade, "Little Louie" Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez have shepherded dance music down new paths with their inventive production style and imaginative feel for different musical forms. The two native New Yorkers have amassed an overwhelming body of work in that time, one that includes hundreds of original productions, remixes and side projects, redefining the way we think of music in clubs. Vega and Gonzalez defiantly mix everything they can find – house, hip-hop, funk, disco, Latin, African and jazz – into a universal groove. And in doing so, MAW has become a cultural mélange unto itself, emblematic of the multicultural society in which we live.

In this show-stopping mix, I pay tribute to the 'Masters At Work' and bring forth almost two hours of house and garage flavours in all their connotations including MAW, Nuyorican Soul, Sole Fusion, Hardrive and KenLou. I also throw in some of their individual work for good measure and can assure you that this project has taken me to a place as a DJ that not many other artists could have!

Originally from London in the United Kingdom, James started out in the mid 1990’s through the early days of the US Garage House and underground U.K. Garage explosion that took over the capitals airwaves and dance floors. He took great influence from the major players of the time such as Masters at Work, Armand Van Helden, Roger Sanchez, Tuff Jam, MJ Cole, DJ EZ, Grant Nelson and Todd Edwards. In the mid 2000’s however, James started to grow a love for a more funkier type of House which has carried on right through to the here and now. 

With great influence from his mothers love of Funk, Soul & Disco originating in the 70’s coupled with his own grounding across the various House and Garage genres, James’s style can best be described as ‘funk, bump and grit’ with a constant 4totheFloor or 2Step rhythm flowing through it!

“I just love playing with energy and passion and channeling what comes through my heart onto the listener! Genres are somewhat overrated and have a tendency to create limits, I generally don’t think anyone really cares, as long as the vibe is right for the moment and the atmosphere is alive and kicking!”

James returned to DJing in 2022 after a hiatus which lasted almost two decades and is currently a presenter on Select Radio. With his high energy and free flowing style, he has performed at some of London’s major spots including Ministry of Sound, XOYO and Egg LDN as his ascension within the industry continues.
