Next up for us on GU is a project thats been a bit of a labour of love. One of our favourite labels from Back In The Day was the Dutch imprint, Touche. Wed actually love to do a best of compilation for them but unfortunately the two main men (who recorded most of the labels output) dont really see eye to eye any more. One release they didnt make - and therefore one we could license - was this 1995 classic from Orlando Voorn. So after much googling, random Facebook messages and so on we finally tracked down Mr. Voorn and got his permission to rerelease this killer bit of grimey 90s house. 

Who better remix a track with this title than Mosca. Ever since we had "Bax" on repeat in 2011, weve been asking him to do something for the label and finally, last year, with a rework of this classic on offer, he relented. And what a job hes done, taking the spirit of the original and transposing it into a modern day sweat-box jacker. 

Next up are Mia Dora. Theyve been a bit quiet since the release of their EP on Optimo Trax but this tough-as-fuck Basic Channel influenced rework proves quality beats quantity any day. 

Kevin is a big fan of the keyboard hook in the original "Old Skool Mix" and so hes taken Orlandos vocals and worked them into his own bassnpiano jam for 2015. 

Lastly, the original mix is included so you can see the kind of thing Kevin used to love playing in 1995 (and that still sounds good today).

From the new Ekoplekz LP 'Bioprodukt' out 16th June 2017

Ekoplekz returns with his fourth album for Planet Mu, in the shape of 10-tracker "Bioprodukt". The unique lo-fi, woozy sound of Bristol's Nick Edwards stays intact while he veers towards the nineties for inspiration: the bleep and bass sound of the north of England is one touchpoint and the acid gurgles of the 303 are another.

While the murky lo-fi production levels and evocative melodies remain, they are now bolstered by a more muscular rhythmic chassis. Snappier kicks and snares mingle with dense layers of percussion and deep undulating sub-basslines adding a funkier edge, as typified by opening track "Elevation" where playful beats interlock with breezy keyboard flourishes to create something uncharacteristically upbeat. Similarly, the gentle, fluid motion of "Slipstream" and "Calypzoid" represent some of the most appealingly chilled grooves in the Ekoplekz canon to date.

But the darker-edged material remains. "Expedition" has a pensive, percussion-heavy feel whilst "Acrid Acid" is a dirt-encrusted slow-mo techno meltdown. "Transcience" displays the Ekoplekz trademark dub-fx in full flight over a driving lo-end, before "Descent" leads down to the final section, where the beats fade out, replaced by rippling layers of spectral ferric ambience on the epic "Low-X Over", before finishing with the radiant looped stasis of "Denier Daze".

The albums shifting, imperfect patterns and muted colours are visually mirrored in the beautifully realised sleeve by the Print Project.

Donald Rumsfeld once famously quipped that in life there are "known unknowns and unknown unknowns".  Well, allow me to be just a tad Rumsfeldian here and argue that in electronic music there are tracks that are "predictably mind bending" and "unpredictably mind bending".  Predictably mind bending music aims to confuse and dislodge the listener, but does it so formulaically that you could almost see the artist behind the proverbial curtain, sweating and toiling in their attempts to manipulate.  At best, it feels like an etude, but, more often, it feels forced, flat and leaves one with a headache rather than a bent mind.   

J.Albert's Paradolia firmly belongs to the other category of music: unpredictably mind bending.  You don’t see the man behind the curtain, you don’t glean any discernible formula or attempts at listener manipulation: you just hear a track that is wonderfully chaotic, full of textures, broken rhythms, and intermittent dubby explorations.  It's a hot mess with alternating focal points and shifting emphasis that somehow manages to build momentum and propel itself forward while never resorting to the banal or traditional.  It's orchestrated chaos.  Mind bent.  No headache.
