After 7 strong and ranging releases by the likes of KiNK, Fort Romeau, Autarkic and De Sluwe Vos amongst others DGTL Records has set out a diverse and yet steady course. A mixture of these different sounds is all found on this Various Artists EP, with input coming from different parts of the planet. The 4-tracker consists of contributions by HAAi, Rebolledo and Paulor, Axel Boman and JP Enfant, of which three are also playing at the annual DGTL festival in Amsterdam this April. Needless to say, the EP will be available at the festival too. The Various Artist release on the Dutch label is the first in a series, so expect more to come.

HAAi is up first on the EP with her track ‘Drumting’. The Australian born, London based DJ and producer has enjoyed a rapid rise to prominence over the past few years, most recently winning the title of the BBC’s ‘Most Essential Mix of 2018’ for her contribution to the world- renowned mix series. ‘Drumting’ channels a similar energy to that found in her warm up sets, with a danceable yet steady rhythm underpinning her characteristic globally-influenced blend of electronic and acoustic elements.

The typical driving and sturdy sound of Mexico’s Rebolledo and Paulor is evident on the A2 side of the EP. Their ‘The Fog and the Forest’ is almost like an LCD Soundsystem song without the lyrics due to the sturdy bass line. When the captivating synths and overpowering guitar chords drag you further into the foggy forest there’s no turning back, but why would you!?

Axel Boman’s ‘Surfliner’ is one to listen to while overlooking the ocean after a warm day in the sun for sure. The emotional piano chords that are with you throughout almost the entire track, are there to hold-on to while ‘Surfliner’ takes you on a melodic and enticing trip that is best described as new-school Balearic.

Another trip comes from Amsterdam’s own techno wunderkind JP Enfant. ‘Sputnik’ is a smooth but stirring ride into space loaded with hallucinogenic acid lines. Exploding into ecstasy at the edge of the universe, while the ride back to planet Earth is just as exciting as the way up. JP Enfant’s techno track is the perfect closer of the very first VA release on DGTL.

Just like the previous two releases the artwork on this EP comes from the very skilled duo Boris Acket and Tim Straver.

Jacques Bon, host of the Smallville record store dependance in Paris debuts Live At Robert Johnson with pure deep house vibes. "Fractals" features two tracks by the Parisian artist and two remixes by Lauer, member of numerous collaborations like Tuff City Kids, Black Spuma, and Crabsticks, to name just a few.

In greek mythology, Gaia personifies planet Earth and is an ancestral mother of all life, a goddess that stands at the root of the greek gods' family tree.  References to Gaia usually conjure imagery of bountiful earth, beginnings, fertility and all things organic.  
Gateway to Gaia, Bas Dobblaer & Vand's excellent new track channels that imagery aurally: just like the primordial greek deities came out of chaos, the track starts with a shapeless soup of percussive sounds that slowly, unhurriedly (just like life itself) morphs and takes shape into a beat.  The textures themselves have a very organic sound to them and are more likely to have been sourced from various sounds heard in the forest than conjured up by a cold digital sound bank.  The beat then further evolves and gets supplemented by also-very-earthy-sounding pads, transforming this particular listener's room from a concrete cage in the urban jungle of new york to a echo-y stone cave in the forest, sometime long ago, at the cusp of life as we know it. A gateway indeed!

Quirky and trippy house flavours are served up by Desert Sound Colony and Baby Rollen on the ‘Beta Burner’ E.P., with added psychedelic flavours courtesy of an 
A Sagittariun Remix.

Hot of the heels of stellar releases for Touch From A Distance, Snap Crackle & Pop, and his very own Holding Hands Records, Desert Sound Colony debuts for Futureboogie, and delivers a trio of collaborative tracks with Baby Rollen, and a solo jam to boot!

Title track, ‘Beta Burner’, is built upon an infectious break-beat groove and bumping sub-bass line; Rhodes chords jostle for position with dubbed out tones, synth hits and acid riffs, as this colourful and contagious track works its magic.  

Bristol based techno dreamweaver, A Sagittariun, summons up the original track’s darker elements for a slower paced, but just as deadly, “Re-Dream”.  ‘Sagi’ slingshots his remix with tribal snares and a typically transcendental arp riff over muscular beats. 

The inventive and playful work continues on ‘Dumpster Truck’, with the gargantuan bassline taking centre stage, supported by swinging broken beats and frisky sound manipulation for a truly enjoyable ride.  Wrapping up the EP, Desert Sound Colony goes solo on ‘Seismic Soy Bean’, ramping up the funk factor past 11, and dishing up the kind of headsy, happy tech grooves that the likes of U-Freqs and Wiggle were foraging at the turn of the millennium, to great effect.
