Standing out in the overcrowded DJ world is not easy. To do so when you're just 17 is almost unbelievable. But that is when Belgian-born AliA (@aliamusicc) first started making people take note of her fresh selections and technical skills on the decks. They were way beyond her years and since then she has gone on to become a resident at Belgium’s HORST Festival and a guest at the likes of Worldwide, Dimensions and Lowlands. 

This week's mix is pure vibes. It shows off AliA's ability to seamlessly join dots between seemingly disparate sounds: in her hands a transition from lo-fi house to breezy jazz-funk is easy. A lush vocal cut into dark and dirty bass rhythms? No problem. It all adds up to a selection that will be suited to any occasion, from a pre-party warm-up at home to a long drive in your car. Good music is good music, no matter the speed or style, and never is that more obvious than when listening to AliA do her thing.

LOOSEJOINTS RAIDO #19  Sunset Bliss Mix by Saphileaum

This mix has been brewing in my head for a while now.. An inkling of it first started to pop up back in October while we were at our biannual Delayed gathering in the mountains of upstate New York. I played a set with a dear friend on the Sunday morning there - cozy & hopeful music from various corners of our collections that don't get played very often but are set aside for special moments. My favorite kind of music.. It was one of the most memorable sets I've played & brought up a ton of emotions & memories from past experiences hearing some of those songs. Memories from my wedding, memories of my brother, memories from times living in Los Angeles when Sundays were all about lounging around all day in the sunshine after nights of dancing into the early hours of the morning. We laughed, cried, danced, ate lunch, all over the course of the morning into the early afternoon. It laid the foundation for how I wanted to approach this mix for Zach.

Sundays for me have always been a day of healing - mentally, physically, emotionally. It's a day to seek inner peace & a day to be reminded of everything you have to be grateful for in spite of anything else. I recorded this mix on a rainy Saturday earlier this month, channeling all of those memories & feelings, with my dog by my feet while my wife & daughter wandered about the house, making beaded bracelets & doing various arts & crafts.

From me to you, a warm hug & the promise of spring.

"The set ends with a track I made, built around words by Teig Sadhana about the vulnerability of men. It’s a subject that comes up often in my work as an applied psychologist, especially in conversations with boys and young men. Some carry unspoken thoughts - like feeling content with the idea of becoming a stay-at-home dad, or not pursuing traditional career ambitions. Sometimes about smaller subjects, like asking for help. Many describe pressure from society, or a lack of support from peers, when it comes to embracing less conventional paths.

I believe there’s a lot to gain, as a society, if men feel freer to speak about these thoughts. If being loved and respected is tied in the mind to career success, self-reliance and emotional toughness, it becomes difficult to let go of that framework. Historically, this mindset has been rewarded with status and security - but that doesn’t mean it’s something healthy for everyone to continue striving for.

We’re often comfortable talking about ambition, strength, and problem-solving - traits we’ve learned to view as charismatic or positive. But many of us were never taught how to speak openly about things that might be seen as weak or uncertain.

And yet, isn’t it one of the braver things - to show vulnerability in the face of discomfort or fear? Toughness can serve many purposes, but I think a more open and compassionate attitude among men toward vulnerability can help us become less protective of what’s been built in the world and in our minds, creating more space for everyone in society."
