His recent album, <em>Synthetic Vision</em>, managed to encapsulate his dancefloor approach whilst also presenting tracks that drew from unexpected musical sources showing the world how honed and toned his productions really are and ahead of the Playaz Xmas Special on the Sunday 28th December we wanted to share a piece of that ourselves, so we asked Taxman if he’d be up for sending us a special delivery. Lo, this is what popped up on Wetransfer the other day: the perfect prelude to our upcoming post-Christmas special…

When was the last time you listened to an actual ‘mixtape’? You probably think of one of the many mixes inhabiting our digital social spheres, which you might give a quick click or a fast listen. Dutch Drum and Bass connoisseurs Lenzman & Dan Stezo go back in time with the launch of their ‘Soul Tape’, an actual 60 minute cassette tape meant for the discerning Drum and Bass lover.

The Soul Tape is a limited give-away. The hand-crafted package comes in a hard-cover box, with additional T-shirt and a variety of stickers - all with custom artwork by Team Blazin'. Besides that The Soul Tape is a ‘cool’ and fresh (but hyper-traditional) take on the mix-format, it stems from Lenzman and Dan Stezo's 90s ritual of making Hiphop tapes for each other in school.

The Soul Tape exhibits tracks from the world’s finest Drum and Bass artists, blended by Lenzman with Dan Stezo’s narrative slang and distinct voice-over. As a combination they have worked together since 2003, and recently increased their collaborative spirit both on stage and on record. 2014 saw their first release ‘Move & Focus’ together as a combination on the esteemed Metalheadz imprint as part of Lenzman's debut album 'Looking At The Stars.

Lenzman’s tremendous success in his genre and his tour the force around the world doesn't keep him from maintaining a close circle. Long time confidant Team Blazin' adds the artwork in the form of handwritten calligraphy which articulates the Hiphop aesthetics, the three artists’ connecting factor and their shared stylistic background.

The Soul Tape is not for sale, as it is an initiative out of love for the craft, the music and their heritage. The 50 limited edition tapes will be given away to fans over a period of time. As it's holiday season, starting with 10 units via a Facebook “Share to Win” competition. Head over to the Metalheadz Facebook page and you might win a copy of The Soul Tape.

“When we were kids growing up it was all about tapes. It was a time where music was hard to come by and albums were played from start to finish, over and over... It was also a time where we made mixtapes for each other, recorded off CD, radio, whatever. Back then it was Hiphop. We are taking that aesthetics and giving you a piece of nostalgia which celebrates the love for our craft. We've made you a mixtape. This time it's not Hiphop but Drum and Bass music. This a hard-crafted package: 50 slices of nostalgia. Inside you will find a 60 minute tape, mixed and hosted by Lenzman and Dan Stezo. Blindside steps up for Podcast #33. 

Dan has been integral to the UK scene for a hot minute now – schooled on Ratty, Pilgrim, Scotty, Fabio and Bukem at Quest from ‘92, he helped run Pro-Session and Autumn before starting his own event in 2006, Break Thru, and has since joined the SUNANDBASS crew in 2014.

He is also the founder of Blindside Recordings, a label that has been responsible for releasing music from some of drum and bass’ most important producers from the early 2000’s onwards - including the incredible DBridge remix of Dreamworld by Physics, Konspiracy by Marcus Intalex and Noisia’s first release. Blindside Recordings will be making a come back later this year beginning with a release from Calibre, so stay tuned for that!

SUNANDBASS Podcast #33 - Blindside

In the world of Drum & Bass, Bailey's quite a unique prospect. As a broadcaster he was committed to playing the best of drum & bass from across the multitudes of sub genres and micro movements. His 360 degree vision made his shows on BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra and Ministry of Sound Radio the perfect place for the d&b aficionado or casual dabbler to go to keep up to date with the form as a whole. Since moving on from the radio he's continued to plough the same furrow in the clubs, promoting his own free to go mid-week club night, Soul In Motion and treating audiences to the sort of all encompassing sets that got him noticed in the first place.

His passion for the form really shines through, in conversation or on tape so it goes without saying that we're excited to be able to present his latest mix, made ahead of his upcoming appearance alongside LTJ Bukem  in Room Two on Friday 27th February.
