Join Edward George [The Strangeness of Dub] and Dhanveer Singh Brar [Teklife, Ghettoville, Eski] for the first of three live journeys into the mesmerising and troubling sound world of D’Angelo’s Voodoo. Released in 2000, this album marked the apex and perhaps limit of his musical career, and by extension, the apex of RnB, Soul, and Funk’s impact on American society since the 1960s.

With curtains drawn and nothing on screen, the cinema will serve as an environment for close listening to the sounds and ideas flowing out of what is arguably Black American music’s most generative encounter with the wider diaspora.

Sound provided by Pavilion’s new speaker system which will soon be available for creative and community use.

Edward George is the co-founder of Black Audio Film Collective, the writer and broadcaster behind the radio series ‘The Strangeness of Dub’ (Morley College Radio), and the host of Sound of Music (Threads Radio). He is also part of the multimedia duo Flow Motion, and the electronic music group Hallucinator. George’s ‘The Strangeness of Dub’ dives into reggae, dub, versions and versioning, drawing on critical theory, social history, and a deep and a wide cross-genre musical selection. His live music collaborations include the improvised music group, The X Ray Hextet and turntablist Mariam Rezaei. In November 2023, George was the recipient of a Paul Hamlyn Foundation artist award. He lives and works in London.

Dhanveer Singh Brar is a writer, researcher, and teacher focussing on questions of race, culture, aesthetics, politics and theory from the mid-twentieth century to the present. He has published two books, Beefy’s Tune (Dean Blunt Edit) (The 87 Press), and Teklife, Ghettoville, Eski: The Sonic Ecologies of Black Music in the Early Twenty-First Century (Goldsmiths Press). Dhanveer is also member of two research and performance projects, “Le Mardi Gras Listening Collective” (with Louis Moreno, Stefano Harney, Fred Moten, Fumi Okiji, Paul Rekret and Ronald Rose-Antoinette) and “Lovers Discourse” (with Edward George). He works as a Lecturer in Black British History at the University of Leeds.

JADALAREIGN! Even if tonight’s guest didn’t style her professional name with the “shift” button, we would still be shouting it from the typographic rooftops. Here’s an artist frequently spotlighted for her sophisticated-yet-improvisatory style; her depth of musical knowledge, especially regarding sounds of the Black diasporic dance floor; and (to turn her own phrase back on her) impeccable curation of both her own sets and the bills she assembles for Brooklyn electronic institution Nowadays.

Judging by this week’s conversation, Jada would much rather lift up the creators who inspire her, and whose work comprises her (yes) impeccably curated Groove Trackers mix. This honor roll includes tracks inspired by the jazz, funk and soul of her youth, as well as names familiar to anyone who has followed American (i.e. largely Black) electronic music from the back yards of Chicago, to the warehouses of Detroit, to the fields of the Greater Midwest — and on to New York, Europe and beyond.

But Jada’s sound-world is ultimately borderless: “I’m very free jazz with all my creative pursuits. Anything goes you know? Just ultimate freedom is how I like to dress, how I like to play my sets, how I like to live my life, really.” The dance music arc is long, but it bends towards freedom, and JADALAREIGN is definitely ahead of the curve.

Petal Rose is a NY-native, Brooklyn-based producer, DJ, and organizer attempting to nurture the community’s heartbeat. By playing in symphony, she melds her favorite sounds to create a frenetic yet joyous vibe, bolstered by memorable melodies and dynamic drums. Legend has it she’s got bitches doing cartwheels in the club. If that doesn’t convince you, nothing will.
Their sets reflect a lifelong love for rhythm, shaped by Afro, Hip Hop, and R&B, and expanded through House, Ballroom Beats, Breakbeats, Jersey Club, Techno, and Baile. Raw, dynamic, and always charged with energy.

MISS DREAMZCAST 043 Petal

A lesson in "diva house and horniness" from a modern New York darling.  

Ask Kilopatrah Jones who their favourite DJ is, and they'll give you an unequivocal answer: Junior Vasquez. And the influence is telling. Both born and raised in Queens, the two share a sense of house as a life force. Not in a new-age, spiritual sense. For Jones, it means being "sweaty, panting and free." 

The NYC DJ can play anything from techno to drum & bass, but when playing house, there's a particular sense of clarity: they understand the genre in the same lineage as Vasquez, Larry Levan and his peers, as the sound of reinvention, transgression, glamour and joy. 

Across the following two hours, RA.1013 immerses you in that world. It feels like walking into the Sound Factory at peak-time, bodies in glorious motion, fog thick in the air. The Lot Radio resident runs through familiar classics, bringing it home with a gag-inducing sweep of Donna Summer, Celine Dion, CeCe Peniston—and fittingly ends with Madonna, a wink to Jones's hero and his defining moment, "If Madonna Calls." 

Jones' RA Mix also reasserts the idea that clubs should be a place of joy. Not only for our individual needs and fulfillment, but as a political act—especially for marginalised folk. Arriving at a time when systemic regression and cultural decay feels increasingly pervasive, they is a model for what DJs and dance floors can, and arguably should be. As they put it, "I'm just so happy and grateful to be alive and in this body."

RA.1013 Kilopatrah Jones

There’s this saying: “everything’s bigger in Texas.” The implication being that since the state itself is so expansive, so too must be the objects within. We checked, and for the most part, this is false. They just have more room in which to put stuff. Cars and houses are pretty much the same size as everywhere: they just occupy larger lots and navigate longer thoroughfares. Even Texas’ world-famous BBQ is really only “bigger” in terms of portions — the short ribs are still short, the jumbo shrimp no more jumbo than usual. In fact, we could only find one thing coming out of Texas that’s bigger than elsewhere in the country: the beats.

You can tip your ten-gallon hat to Ben Hixon for that. Now based in Brooklyn but hailing from Dallas, Ben heads that city’s Dolfin Records, which for ten years has been pumping out Lone Star bangers the way Texaco pumps out crude. Speaking of black gold, Ben also keeps the pipeline of dance records flowing at Academy records. And Ben’s DJ sets are as well-stocked as his bins, overflowing with House, Hip-Hop and R’n’B sounds of every possible region and flavor. Not bigger sounds, mind you, just bigger portions.
