He’s a one-man synth orchestra, that Debukas. Those beautiful layers of yearning vocals, the Detroit strings, the coruscating hi-hats and drums that speak of years at the altar of house and techno’s venerated gods. I Am Machinery is somewhat apt.

Debukas was born in 2011, though the seeds of it were sewn much earlier. Echoes of its influences go back to Gary Numan singles, teenage forays into the world of Junos and Casios, 808 State and early Warp, Transmat and Metroplex, Arthur Russell and Gino Soccio. It’s all there in the primordial Celtic soup that comprises Debukas.

John Clark was born somewhat earlier. You may or may not have heard about some of his previous exploits. He had a brief dalliance with pop infamy in Japan. There was a series of bands large and small and collaborations so brief John is still not sure they really happened.

I Am Machinery is one of the most complete electronic albums you’ll hear this year – or any other, for that matter. Those years spent toiling in bands has given him a mean ear for the killer hook, just as the hours spent in Rubadub Records in Glasgow provided him with the inspiration.

This is neither house music nor techno, though you can certainly dance to it. Debukas has taken the basic building blocks of those genres and somehow repurposed them to produce music that is vocal-based without featuring formal songs (it feels at times as though he’s sampled himself from some obscure found-sound album). When he hits his stride, you can almost imagine – in some far off, alternative universe, maybe – Debukas on Top Of The Pops performing, say, ‘Some Days’.

If you’ve been lucky enough to come across his EPs for 2020Vision, you will have heard and appreciated his unique style; it sounds like nothing else on the roster yet fits perfectly among it all. I Am Machinery is a step further; a step forward. The sound has received a slight polish though one that comes from confidence in a sure direction rather than songs with a needless sheen. And here’s confidence for you, some of the best material from the EPs has been ditched so the album has a flow, as if all of these songs were conceived to only live together communally on I Am Machinery, like brothers and sisters, or even prisoners (of soul).

On ‘Tape Symphony’, one of the newest songs, Debukas woos us with some white soul, edged with those glittery synths and an unrelenting bass figure. ‘Hold Back The Sea’, technically just a simple house groove, is imbued with his trademark multi-layered vocals which rends it startlingly and unintentionally similar to Frankie Goes To Hollywood – bizarrely, I know, but it just totally works.

I Am Machinery is that rare thing: a great electronic album. It’s where man meets machinery and they have some right old rumpy-pumpy in front of everyone. This is Debukas’s lovechild. Plug in, tune in, blast off.

Coming from the heart of Bosnia, Solomun is a passionate DJ who certainly knows how to please a crowd and keep the energy on the floor. Equally as talented and creative in the studio, he has many releases to his name on his own label Diynamic, as well as other imprints such as Four:Twenty, liebe*detail and Dessous recordings. Made for the dancefloor, his productions always have an element of funk or surprise, reminding people of the fun that's there to be had with music. As a label with many close ties to mobilee records, Diynamic will be co-hosting a party at mobilee's Sonar 2010 celebrations, which makes it even more fitting that this release brings the two forces more closely together.

Solomun's next big bang, being brought to you via Leena music, is a sure extension of his impeccable production skills and style, and is also one of the most unique releases you will here on the label so far. A-side 'Sisi' opens with a head-spinning explosion of notes and chords, being fired out like sparks in a continual loop. Then half way through the record, they dramatically stop, only to soon build up again and set the roller coaster off once more. B-side 'Talk To The Hand' is a bass-heavy and punchy track, that surprises you with euphoric piano chords in the second half, whilst B2 'Curesto' brings all of the elements together with piano chords, build-ups and some drama. Focussing on an increasingly deep house-centred style, German producer Martin Roth returns to Anjunadeep with appropriately titled "Beautiful Life" and the sultry "Make Love To Me Baby". 

Clearly containing some of the DNA from Martin's previous outing "Deep Style", "Beautiful Life" is laced with languid, downtuned grooves and layers moody interludes, softly echoing vocal fades and some gorgeous swathes of synth to conjure an edgy deep house number. 

Offering a more sunny contrast, the sultry and seductive sounds of "Make Love To Me Baby" blend chilled out grooves with a late-night soulful feel and some classic, understated piano house keys.

In June 2011 the house producer Marek Hemmann and the Singer Fabian Reichelt released their first album to the masses on Freude Am Tanzen. Only Our Hearts to Lose was one of the first markers on the way these two were headed they began with the street-sweeper single "Left/Right": the synthesis of pop and club, the melting of Marek Hemmanns singularly fine austere tech house and Fabian Reichelts lyrics. The results couldn't be disputed and even more appreciated, yet still not quite every techno fan could quite feel this flyer from their favorite DJ in strange (quite pop) clothes. Perhaps not everyone trusts themselves to just say to themselves: bring the pathos, the feelings and the melting voice because it just has to be! At the same time in the club context, because as they both are of the opinion that there is the most thrilling place for modern songwriting. Where else can you find the fundamentally excited and music loving bunch in one place? Where else can an artist drop his 'hurray' atom-bomb on the masses and drop it on the one? Thus, 'Only Our Hearts To Lose' presents a shimmering, beautiful being in the club and the balcony, between a tender sunset and the deepest part of the nights dance. 

Im Juni 2011 brachten der Houseproduzent Marek Hemmann und der Sänger Fabian Reichelt bei Freude Am Tanzen in Jena ihr erstes gemeinsames Album auf den Markt. Only Our Hearts To Lose war ein erster dicker Markstein auf dem Weg, den beide im Jahr zuvor mit der Straßenfeger-Single „Left / Right“ begonnen hatten: die Synthese aus Pop und Club, die Verschmelzung von Marek Hemmanns markantem, fein austarierten Tech House und Fabian Reichelts lyrischer Stimme. Das Ergebnis war nicht unumstritten, noch immer goutiert nicht jeder Technofan die Ausflüge seines/ihres Herzens-DJ in fremde (noch dazu eher poppige) Gefilde. Aber vielleicht traut sich auch einfach noch nicht jeder, einmal ganz freien Herzens zu sagen: Ja, bitte, her mit dem Pathos, her mit dem großen Gefühl und dem Schmelz in der Stimme, denn das muss einmal sein! Auch und gerade im Clubkontext, denn das, so sagten beide, sei ja schließlich der spannendste Ort für modernes Songwriting, wo sonst findet man so viele grundbegeisterte und musikliebende Menschen auf einem Haufen, und wo sonst kann man als Künstler alle seine Hurra-Atome so gewaltig mit der Masse zum Gleichklang bringen. So ist Only Our Hearts To Lose ein schönes, schillerndes Wesen zwischen Club und Balkon, zwischen zartem Sonnenaufgang und tiefster Tanznacht.
