From February 25th to 28th, 2016, RBMA Bass Camp touched down in Santiago de Chile, bringing together 16 hand-picked participants from Latin America for a string of studio sessions, workshops and lectures at the NAVE cultural center. Among the international cast of participants were Chilean representatives Imaabs — member of the rising N.A.A.F.I collective currently making waves across the globe — cello virtuosa Felicia Morales, and singer and multi-instrumentalist Lia Nadja. We’re excited to unveil the result of their Bass Camp collaboration here for the first time.

“Extravío” bristles with the relentless, belligerent energy that the N.A.A.F.I name has come embody. Imaabs’ crashing, pneumatic soundscapes find an intriguing match in the portentous combination of Nadja’s vocals and Morales’ cello — making for a blazing mixture that could pass either as battle song or as requiem.

On the tail of his 2015 oeuvre “Manuscript”, which we deemed “a far less jubilant outlook on the club experience than most of his peers’” and “music for packed dungeons and inhabited ruins”, Tomás deepens his dialectic for his 2016 outing, “La Muerte De Todo Lo Nuevo”.

In stark contrast with language of its title, it’s a far less Latin-inflected body of work than “Manuscript”. And in complete agreement with the concept of its title, it does indeed sound like “The Death Of All That Is New” – seemingly oxidizing the stainless steel of of-the-now club music in real time; seemingly demolishing its marble structures in slow motion.

The title track cheekily interpolates a haunting, bespoke variation on the “Alla Luce Del Giorno”/”Chase The Sun” melody atop plummeting percussive concretism, only to gradually unravel into beautiful plucked ostinato with cello accompaniment.

“Anatomía” exists at the odd, but serendipitous point of convergence between a hard, driving, clattering techno track, a sparse Hysterics-esque tool, and a Noah “40” Shebib beat.

“Distopía” begins as something you might hear in a Slipknot skit or hidden track, incrementally adds sparse, fleeting, fragile grime elements, and unceremoniously erupts into a furious volley of snares just as the background harmony reaches its most vulnerable and wistful. Asymmetry and counter-intuitive structure pervade the track – at first unnerving, this progressively subverts expectation and leaves the listener a blank slate, just in time for the finale’s barrage, leading to a touchingly human and intimate moment.

Lastly, “Incierto” is just that – uncertain; meandering as an artform; confusion executed with utmost precision.

On the remix tip, peers M.E.S.H., Ziúr and Ausschuss provide ersatz “alternate takes” to “Anatomía”, “Distopía” and, respectively, “Anatomía” yet again, conveying the synchronicity that suffuses and defines their loose collective.

PTP is proud to present the debut album by Celestial Trax (real name Joni Judén) entitled 'Nothing Is Real,' which he describes as a departure not only in sound but also geographically and spiritually from his previous output, having found an increased interest in mysticism and the esoteric.

Taking inspiration from a quote by Anton Chekov, "if you want to work on your art, work on your life," Judén aimed for the album to be a true representation of his voice at this time. He felt a need to distance himself from the distractions a creative hub like NYC can often provide, not wanting to become too influenced by the city's current trends, and instead shifted his focus inward to cultivate a more meaningful self-connection: this journey and struggle thus serving as the main inspiration to the writing.

In beginning 'Nothing Is Real,' Judén had reached the point of creative purge, deleting almost all samples, sample packs, and software synths. Fueled by ideas of rebirth and true self-projection, he amassed a library of field recordings from New York City, plus samples from his own cassettes, vinyl, and Youtube search history - utilizing every sound source he could come across in his studio whilst trying to spend as little time as possible on the computer screen. The result being an album less concerned with achieving a masterful polish and sonic bombast, instead aiming for more organic textures where noise and imperfection reflects the human experience, with recurring themes of existentialism, surrealism and nature permeating throughout.

Fountain of Meaning is a new sonic fiction from sound artist J.G. Biberkopf following last year’s Ecologies II: Ecosystems of Excess released on Knives. Emerging out of a situation of overflow, the record burrows deeper into his practice of palpable audio theater with a study of object and relations across space-time specific sounds. 

The Fountain as a theme reflects a spouting and spilling of information, an erotic gushing of imagined aural history. “The Fountain was the source of water in the public space in cities,” J.G. Biberkopf explains. “Now it’s pretty much a sexualised architectural gesture of both beautification and the spectacle of dominant ideologies.” 

The western classical musical canon, much like the perpetual coming of the fountain, flush the headphone space with stimuli. Reflex and memory guides the listener through a semiotic architecture of processed recordings of masses in Catholic churches and contemporary performances of pre-medieval music. A liquidity of structure has an anxious influence and is a closed system approach to form and imagination. When water flows, it fills every space, then spills over to claim more. History is equally abundant and alive. We have never had as much history as we have now. We have never been able to see ourselves as we can now. 

A knowledge of a grander architecture of knowing and recalling oppress the ecologies of human decision-making.The nature of the archive has  transformed into a total and panoptic intelligence. A life is a gamble as the inventory of the world overflows into the production of a spectral third, an other, a confrontation. Fountain of Meaning offers a dynamic tension and release. A molecular tragedy, our abject recovery into a collaborative reimagining of a trauma long forgotten.

“Aerial / Paperbags” is the second EP from Scintii, aka Taiwanese producer/vocalist Stella Chung. The music is inspired by travels, dreams, stories and films of unsaid emotions. The production merges her influences of club music, memories of her father playing classical music while driving, as well as focusing on exploring her vocal abilities. The release also marks her first time working closely with another producer, Alexis Chan aka Soda Plains.

Scintii

Taiwanese producer/vocalist Scintii (aka Stella Chung), bears a diverse background in both studio composition and pop music which she studied whilst residing in London for several years.

Since her move to Shanghai in 2017, Scintii has become a core member of the thriving club scene in the city. She has played for i-D, Diskotopia on RBMA Radio Tokyo, NTS & Radar Radio. She recently played a number of London shows, including events at Southbank Centre, and headlining at Corsica Studios.

Mica, her first release, is inspired by the form and body of minerals, pensively underpinning dark, elusive, cut-up pop vocals with crystalline synths and rhythms from UK grime to the dembow for an enrapturing and refreshing sound. Her second EP Aerial / Paperbags is due late November this year, along with a few vocal collaborations with high profile artists.

Eric Copeland - Electric Mud (Gerry Read Remix)

Alina Izolenta and Kamil Ea, the duo more formally known as PTU, present their debut album Am I Who I Am on трип.

The origins of PTU can be traced back to the early 00s, which found the duo spending their formative years experimenting with analog synths and sharing music onto each other’s hard drives. The physicality of this approach went on to have an immeasurable effect on their aesthetic, which bears an unmistakable live feel - rich with improvisation and surprises. 

A relatively sparse discography might mislead you from the fact that they have over a decade of experience delving into the strangest depths of analog hardware and jamming on obscure synths. A brief 2016 appearance on the трип concept album When I was 14 was followed by the emergence of ‘A Broken Clock Is Right Twice A Day’ - a stand out track on Nina Kraviz’ fabric 91 mix - which went on to become the title track for their highly acclaimed 2017 debut EP. Now, the duo present their singular, uncategorisable take on electronic music across a full length album.

Assimilating references to techno and IDM, but placing them in far less familiar structures, PTU’s productions breathe life into precise rhythmic patterns with equal doses of energy, experimentation and humour. Their music (just about) files under techno, but their approach to composition rejects genre boundaries of any kind, opting instead for a free-form exploration of the weird and wonderful.

Across twelve tracks, they cut and chop their way through frenetic marching drums and spiralling acid leads, awakening an army of malfunctioning robots as they go. Whilst Am I Who I Am boasts a vast spectrum of bizarre ideas - often introduced at high velocity - each one is executed with a skillful dose of restraint, summoning energy from microscopically detailed arrangements. From the angular maximalism of ‘Castor & Pollux’ to the eerie polyrhythms of ‘After Cities’ and the relentless hammer drills of ‘Sirocco’, PTU find life in the most extraordinary of places.

Following on from a series of stand-out appearances on трип, Am I Who I Am is a thrilling voyage into techno’s strangest sector.
