Narratives Music fires into 2014 by welcoming back the artist Overlook for his first full single on the label. Overlook’s first foray on Narratives delivered the cold edges of ‘Three Shards’ last year, a track which gained support across the 170bpm spectrum and numerous Single of the Month commendations. 

This release sees the sought after producer weaving his craft over a double A side, suitably showing the versatility and contrast of his talent.

The first piece ‘False’, opens with strings drenched in tones of bereft emotion, sounds kissed by images and memories. The chords find matrimony with drums sent back from the future and a driving low end that relentlessly dances underneath. Twisting beats and bass trickery embraced by musicality and emotion, ‘False’ has found its way in to the peak time DJ sets of Goldie while similarly slipping into more ethereal and subdued palettes; it exudes the sound of Narratives.

‘Everything Counts’ offers a completely contrasting stance. Drum machine hits and a depth of bubbling basses build foundation for this exploratory piece, its groove building throughout under its waves of claustrophobic immersion. Only half way into the piece is the tension released as relentless bongos join the fray and an energy of tribal and industrial momentum cuts through. Sleazy, reflective and relentless, ‘Everything Counts’, displays a producer uncompromisingly creating his art.

Metalheadz kicks off a very exciting 2014 with a new team of producers for the label. 

Firstly introducing Mako and DLR who are already starting work on their forthcoming combined Metalheadz album project, alongside we have the fledgling talents of Villem and the elder statesmen of the scene Ant TC1 who in his own right has had a hand in a fair share of memorable releases and himself heads up Dispatch Recordings and Metalheadz.

META015 is project that shows a great depth in the talents of the foursome, it’s a beauty and the beast affair, fantastically executed in the great tradition of Metalheadz.
Kicking off with ‘Hungry For Atmosphere’ this stepper is a perfect set opener, heartfelt strings and keys give way to contorted mids and FXs, whilst the familiar vocal is processed into something altogether more sinister. The track clocks at just over 7 minutes and this says everything of the tracks ambitions, not pandering to anything but its own journey.
Next to step into the ring is ‘A Certain Flavour’ the opposite but yet perfectly paired track to go with the A side. Beginning with a very cinematic introduction it unravels into a growling bass led stepper with staccato drums before switching into a two-step drum work out, tailor made for dancefloors and DJs alike.

A release that we are very happy to kick 2014 off with, welcome to the new breed!

At the start of 2012 Sabre, Stray and Halogenix teamed up to drop one of the most blissful pieces of drum & bass that year, ‘Oblique’. Since then the dreamteam have continued their late night studio sessions and are now ready to announce their new collaborative project, Ivy Lab. Kicking off Critical’s 2013 season is the first fruit of their labour, ‘Afterthought’, again featuring the esteemed vocal talents of Frank Carter III to create the most inspired start to the year we could wish for.

‘Afterthought’ is a masterpiece filled with polished breaks, melancholic chords, reversed strings and Carter’s unmistakable heart wrenching sounds that draw us into the spine-tingling production, coming as an Ivy Lab standard. A late night marcher or a summers day soother, the choice is yours for the most beautiful, teary-eyed slice of drum & bass you’ll have heard in a long time. Quality through and through.

‘Brat’ on the other hand shows the other side to Ivy Lab as the guys get aggy at the controls for a supremely sick peak-time performer. Creeping bleep FX open it up as the b-line seeps into the mix for a drop into some proper dance floor funk. Meticulous on the edits and the morphing bass, it’s a dirty yin to the A-side’s yang.
