Real / Fake Japanese Popular Music Mix from 1914~1980 by Yusuke Wajima & dj sniff *Commissioned by Global Pop Cultures Magazine, edition: “Real Fake, Fake Realness”
Starting from the early 1900s, Japanese popular music was established through incorporating various styles of foreign music such as jazz, Hawaiian, tango, and Afro- Cuban music. Its history is full of local composers releasing under fake foreign identities, mixed race and American-born Japanese singers, and overseas groups singing in Japanese. While this hybrid music is now nostalgic and even retro, it also illustrates how colonialism/post-colonialism, ethnicity, and stereotypes have played out in cultural identities and global pop cultures. Tracks selection and comments provided by musicologist Yusuke Wajima. DJ mix, introduction, and English translation by dj sniff (Takuro Mizuta Lippit).

This album came to be in result of the challenge we set for us for the advent time of 2023. We set rules that we would produce and release a track and my partner Anna Repman would do a painting for this track. For 20 days we continue to release until we decided to abrupt it few days before Christmas. Resulting album turned out to cover a bunch of different genres, from ambient and soundscape to hip=hop beats and even breakcore.

All the tracks are available for use in content under Creative Commons BY 4.0 international. Safe to use in YouTube video - no automatic flags or content-id detections.

Summer Daydream

"Hakana" is an ambient collaboration between modular artist Yumi Iwaki (Tokyo/LA) and koto/modular artist Kasson Crooker (Seattle).  The two met at Synthplex in LA where they both performed and agreed that a fusing of their unique styles would beget something wonderful.  Yumi first created lush beds of synths and processed samples, with Kasson then performing the traditional Japanese koto heavily processed through modulars. Yumi's spoken word poetry blends the idea of 果てない (hatenai / endless) with 儚い (hakanai / fleeting)  ~ please enjoy our new song!
