Than the words they’d say.

Syrup-thick and bitter clean,
He washed my mouth with kerosene.
Barrel-candy, heavy rules,
Sweetness carved from old-time cruel.
Smiled like love, tasted like shame—
Root beer barrels, none of it changed.

Apron mother, silent mouth,
Eyes cast low to avoid the south.
He said tradition, I heard dread,
“Boys don’t cry,” but girls play dead.
I learned to tiptoe through the dark,
Wishing for a spark, but missing the mark.
The stories they told, all riddled with lies,
But they never spoke of the tear in my eyes.
I played the part, the good little child,
But behind my smile, I was always wild.

Tin-tin laughter from the porch swing ghosts,
But my memories all wear Sunday coats.
If you were good, you got a treat,
If you were bad, he’d make you bleed.
Every day was a game I lost,
But the price of freedom came with a cost.
