I met Mike Banks, Jeff Mills and Robert Hood from Underground Resistance in the R&S studios in Ghent in February 1992 and persuaded Mike to do a telephone interview with my friend Bjørn Torske from Brygga Radio in Tromsø.

The Baron of Techno steps up.

Dave Clarke may be best known for uncompromising techno - that style is at the heart of classic records like Archive One and the 'Red' series of singles, and was one of the attributes that John Peel, who featured him regularly on his BBC radio show, lauded him for - but electro and hip-hop are massive parts of his DNA too. He started as a hip-hop DJ in the late '80s, and has tirelessly championed electro on his White Noise radio show. His classic World Service mix CD was also split into two halves, one for techno and the other for electro. 

Released ahead of an appearance at Fabric's Room 2 this coming Saturday March 14, Clarke's FACT mix leans heavy on the electro, with several appearances from UK gloom-monger Dez Williams and oft-overlooked veteran Will Web, plus more established names like Radioactive Man and Keith Tucker. As the mix winds down, though, it really turns off-piste: there's whirling weirdness from Martin Rev, odd-ball funk from Toob and even a spin for UK breakbeat classic 'Mad Monks on Zinc'.

I mixed some of my personal favorite tracks by James Stinson and Gerald Donald aka DREXCIYA to create an underwater journey - dive in and enjoy the real vintage Detroit electro goodness.

The journey (TRACKLIST) goes a little something like this:

After taking a glimpse at a NUCLEAR FACELIFT at TEMPLE OF DOS DE AQUA we are DRIFTING INTO A TIME OF NO FUTURE with our Lardossen cruiser 8-203X. When we reach BUBBLE METROPOLIS, we are granted entrance to Drexciya by Drexciyan cruise controller X205 and our trip begins. We cross AQUARAZORDA and see the mysterious SPECIES OF THE POD at the beautiful ANDREAN SAND DUNES. We experience a wonderful DIMENSIONAL GLIDE but all of a sudden face some UNDERSEA DISTURBANCES caused by DR. BLOWFIN´S BLACK STORM STABALIZING SPHERES and sink deeper and deeper. We run a TONIMPULSTEST but some SUPERIOR RACE blocks the DATA TRANSFER to THE PLANKTON ORGANISATION via a DIGITAL TSUNAMI. We are lost in the deep; according to the HYDRO THEORY we must be somewhere BEYOND THE ABYSS. But then - we are floating up! UNORDINARY REALITIES - seeing light coming through the sea again feels like the BIRTH OF NEW LIFE. Back at the surface, with tears in our eyes we start singing: LET ME BE who I wanna be…

No introductions necessary for installment number two in our series of recordings from the booth. Enclosed is just under three hours of hard music from two members of UR that we were lucky enough to have come through at the end of March.

The recording is split into two parts. The high-octane, acidic, psycho stuff in this section comes courtesy of Dex Nomadico, who played during the first half of the party. And the raw, thumping, soulful sounds in the other section are taken from the last hour or so of Mark Flash's set – just as daylight broke through. 

Big respect and praise due to the whole UR family for letting us air these out and to all the dancers who gave this one their energy.

Dj Maaco started as a drummer at age 6 playing for a small church, by age 12 he dropped the sticks and got himself a cardboard and started break dancing! By 14, he was drawing turntables and mixers on his cardboard boxes and pretending as if he was rocking parties. He talked his dad into buying him his very first mixer from Radio Shack, he himself bought a Mcdonald turntable for 35 bucks with the 8 track tape player built in. He rigged it to his mixer and from that he learned how to mix and scratch. AT age 16 Kool Keith(Tucker) showed him an 808, Juno 106, and some other stuff. Keith then pulled out shoeboxes of cassette tapes to let him hear stuff he had been working on. DJ Maaco afterwards bought himself a keyboard and started making music. His first release was in 1992, with a group called “One Nation” and he later hooked up with DJ PDOG and together they formed M.A.P. Records. They put out stuff on their own label as Detroit In Effect. They later hooked up with SERGE of CLONE Records and have since then played numerous times in Europe and the U.K. DJ Maaco has created raw, insistent electro music that moves bodies…. There aren’t many who can resist the rhythms and hooks that he throws down and the attitude he has brought represents that ghetto groove in its purest unfiltered form. With a long history of musical appreciation and creation with influences springing from Gospel through Hip Hop to Techno and Miami Bass, Detroit In Effect bring it like so few can. Irresistible music with enough dirt to satisfy the sleaziest party animal or clarity of tone to inspire the most informed minds.

Underground Resistance is probably the most important Detroit record label since Motown: their sound and attitude emerged in the early '90s as the most uncompromising one from the Motorcity, it was pivotal in shaping US and European Techno, started the resurgence of 90's Electro, but most of all indelebly marked the consciousness of thousands of people around the world who share their messages of resistance and hope.
And last but not least, they did so many amazing records!

So, 30 years has passed since UR-001 came out in 1990.
Since UR and 'Mad' Mike Banks were so influential for me, not just sonically but mostly on the attitude side of things, I decided to go thru all my 12"s and make a retrospective tribute mix to celebrate this anniversary.

At first I wanted to pick 30 tracks only and keep it compact but so many great ones were left out.. so I just started and at the end I used 60+ tracks! Almost all the classics are there, plus a fair share of lesser known tunes which really shine as well in my opinion. All from the UR catalogue only. No Z-tracks unfortunately :)

I really hope to have done justice to their sound, and I hope as well that the listeners will enjoy the ride, have the chance to discover some amazing music, and maybe feel the energy and pride and love that Mike Banks and the UR crew put into the music and pressed into the grooves.
