Publicans interviewed on local radio 19/11/2014 around the country about the incoming clause 2 amendment to the Small Business Bill allowing tied publicans to apply for a Market Rent Only option in their lease if they believe their contract with their pub company is disadvantaging them. Once implemented the tenant would have their pub rent assessed by an independent assessor and would be able to buy their supplies from the open market.

Martin Booth tells Rachel Burden how his village came together to buy their local pub. Through the Hudswell Community Charity, they now rent out three cottages for affordable housing in the village, as well as running a shop, library and bee hives.

From the Queen's Head in Poplar, Melissa Cole and Tyler Don, the licensee talk about Melissa's local 'old man pub' as the programme producers label it and as part of a resurgence of popularity in pubs.

Several friends heard the segment and told me about it... It's always a tad exciting to anticipate a national radio or television show with a massive audience is going to cover pubs but what gets aired is never more than froth that never looks at endemic structural issues that have brought Britain's pub sector to the point of existential crisis, which is exactly where it's at right now: 

The Public House, a unique, national, British civic institution, the world's original social network, OUR common secular social construct, fondly thought of by tens of millions of us, vital to national community health and wellbeing, is in its end of days and as history proves the best WE can do is turn this into a bit of light entertainment in a popular magazine programme.

The scantest research shows this was a YOUNG'S PUB - just to note: there's ALWAYS, somewhere in any pub's story, a private equity driven entity/pubco owner whose chronically irresponsible management of its public house assets has reduced the pub to being a so run down boozer that it's totally unfit for hospitality purposes, which is why most close and why this one has been under threat of permanent loss through conversion to residential for more than a decade, passing from one form of tenure to another until very recently it's become its current incarnation as a 'community pub'. Listening between the lines it's clear that The Queen's Head still remains under threat. Having said that incidentally there's more coverage on the Queen's head than any other pub I can recall having looked at in 20 years of researching the #GreatBritishPubcoScam ... I'll post links to the material I found while listening to the segment...

Nick Love - Jorvic (York) Radio's Love in the Morning is really well informed about pubs and beer and all their social benefits - interview with Paul Crossman - owner of The Swan, The Slip Inn and The Volunteer Arms three excellent beer led pubs in York - about the lockdown and the bigger picture about pubco freeholders expecting publicans to pay full rent through lockdown. Admiral Taverns one of the Big Six has broken ranks with the BigBiz cartel and given all its tenants a rent break indefinitely> THAT is the right thing to do - the others, Greene King, Marston's; EiGroup/Stonegate; Punch Taverns; Star Pubs & Bars/Heineken (one of Paul's pubs is a free of tie lease with Heineken) have all procrastinated with their 'business partners' who make ALL the money for the pubcos - and have not stopped rent demands. Unless they follow Adminral's example there will be no publicans to reopen the pubs when THIS crisis is over and the Pubs Crisis which has been going on for 20 years - will come to a head and 30% of British Pubs will be closed indefinitely.
