Happy New Year to everyone - for the first time in years I went overseas without working on a project  YAY - just a holiday so i kept the internet at arms length for a change and enjoyed the food, romance  and sites of Paris... and then i got married !  Carolyn and I were waiting forever for our plane home and there just happened to be a bright red public piano in one of the waiting lounges... so i embarrassed myself in front of the Parisians... i look forward to catching up on all of yr music as I am now home. All the best for the up coming year : )

BIRDS OF PARADISE - SHORT TALES PART III

In this third edition of short musical tales for three acoustic guitars, exploring furthermore on the possibilities of using multiple acoustic guitars , I am again letting the inspiration take me, free from fixed form or styles, but of course infused with music that has lived with me my entire life. You'll hear Latin, Jazz, Flamenco, Fusion, Blues, Classical and more.  Shout out to the free thinkers and the open minded...

I regularly get questions about my acoustic guitar technique, so I will elaborate here: In this track I play everything in fingerpicking style, plucking the strings with my right hand using my nails and part of the fleshy fingertips to create the sounds. I mute the stings sometimes by placing my handpalm on the strings and plucking with the fingertips, or I will rest my right hand pinky on the strings and play with thumb, index and second finger. No plectrum here, although I love that sound and way of playing too, as you will hear in other pieces of mine.

Birds of Paradise | Short Tales Part III | Dan van den Berg

This is a collaboration with the talented Karin-Maria Brunner from Switzerland. She composed the music and asked me if I would be interested in doing vocals and some guitar. I decided to write the lyrics in the Swiss dialect of German. Karin made it easy for me to write lyrics and do some acoustic guitar with her wonderfully composed song. Here are the lyrics in Swiss German and then English. The song art is actually a photo of where Karin used to live in the mountains. Hope you enjoy!

we’re very excited to show you guys this song as it was our first time doing everything ourselves (writing, producing and mixing). it might not be perfect, but we're still very proud of it :’)

📖 About the song:
I wrote this song thinking that every time you encounter an obstacle in life you should ask yourself and see yourself from the outside if you really feel good at that moment in your life or you can change the direction of the path towards something better by listening from the heart.

Gabriel was born in San José, Costa Rica. His artistic life began when he received guitar lessons with his grandfather and from there he decided to focus on more than one instrument, learning to play piano, drums, banjo, percussion and bass. At the age of 12 he became interested in recording his own music and with the help of his professional producer uncle Alejandro Fernández, Gabriel was learning with time and practice until he recorded his first album entitled "Aromas", this written, performed and produced by him. He collaborated with other musicians in different projects of indie folk, pop, rock, electronic and meditative music. He currently performs as a soloist or with his band as well as composing, producing and writing his own songs.

Love Wants Its Own Way | The Consolers

For the 31st Solar Kama Sutra song I decided to challenge myself a bit and do something in 7/4 time.  I tried remembering a band I heard do that and thought, "Isn't Pink Floyd's "Money" in 7/4 time?"  I remembered hearing it and thinking it was...

...  Turns out it is!  So for that reason I thought of Pink Floyd, and tried to do a Pink Floydish sound.    It's also a nod to Radiohead's "Pyramid Song".  I tried to capture the same feeling that song gives me, but with Solar Kama Sutra this time. 
(by the way, Solar Kama Sutra has always been just one person.  It's just the name for what I call the music)

Since Radiohead already used "Pyramid" which is well-known since ancient Egypt to be the coolest shape, I had to go with something else.  "Sphere Song" and "Cube Song" ?...  Well...  Those song titles just aren't gonna work....   Maybe "Dodecahedron Song"?....  Hmm... That actually sounds pretty catchy...  Feel free to use it!  

 My vocals are used more heavily on this track than it seems.  Throughout the track I tried to make my vocals sound like guitars and other instruments

  And definitely hats off to Pink Floyd for making a hit song in a 7/4 time signature.   How many times has that been done before?!

And of course, hats off to Stonehenge.  The ultimate inspiration for this track

OCHTENDGLOREN | Short Tales Part V

“Ochtendgloren” is a great Dutch word meaning “Dawn”. But in a more poetic sense, it has a sense of optimism, it holds a promise of a beautiful day to come. The morning dawns on the horizon...
The track travels through several different fields and textures, traveling acoustically through many different styles, I feel it’s hard to categorize where this would land in an overall description, but I guess World fusion comes closest. But it contains elements of classical, Jazz, flamenco, Latin, pop, rock, blues.

I play my Flamenco Negro guitar again in a setting of a guitar trio. In form it can be considered as a continuation of my Short Tales series. The lead guitar has long sections that are improvised over the bed of the two accompanying guitars.

Ochtendgloren | Short Tales part V |  Dan van den Berg

THE RUSH OF THE RACE AND THE CALM AFTER | SHORT TALES PART VI

This vivid and lively piece for three acoustic guitars is made as a continuation of my Short Tales Series. As the title implies wild flurries of notes are followed up by the guitars in sequence and in unison, chasing , each challenging the other. Twists and turns follow into happy, mysterious, elated, restless and melancholic passages, always in movement. I find great joy in coming up with unexpected harmonies that can come from many different styles. In this sense this series doesn’t follow any strict style or form. Parts, especially the lead guitar are improvised. The ending has a little surprise so don’t leave too soon... Wait for it! ;)

I play my Flamenco Negro guitar strung with a new type of carbon strings for acoustic guitar by Knobloch ACTIVES CX carbon medium tension recommended by flamenco meastro Antonio Rey.

The Rush of the Race and the Calm after | Short Tales Part VI | Dan van den Berg

DE FUEGO Y HIELO | OF FIRE & ICE

This piece is about contrasts, of calm and cool to passionate and fiery. The first section builds towards a climax where percussion and a bass are added to form a fandangos midsection. This is completely brought back to tranquility in the end section. The first part of the ending section contains a little “quote” of a piece by the guitar trio (DeLucia, McLaughlin, DiMeola) called “David”. That leads into a recap and extension of the opening theme which concludes the track.

I wrote it originally as just an acoustic trio guitar piece, but felt the urge here to add percussion and bass, to intensify the midsection.

FUEGO DE INVIERNO - WINTER FIRE - SHORT TALES PART VIII

In this part of my Short Tales Series, pieces for three acoustic guitars, I explore diversions from a very solemn, contemplative Flamenco style or "Palo" called Seguiriya. “Seguiriya” is one of the oldest flamenco styles. It is one of the most important with the “bulería” and “soleá”. More precisely I blend it with the Buleria. You can hear snippets of the original style here and there in this piece as well as the outro. I however travel into different fields of music with it, Latin, Classical and Jazz. The result is I guess Fusion or Worldmusic. 

I hope you'll enjoy this one as well as the full series of Short Tales for Three Guitars, which I will put up here as an album, as well as on Bandcamp soon for sale.
