One of the most well-known and respected underground dance music producers of the 1990s and noughties, Jon Carter ducked out of the music game for a decade or more. Recently he has sensationally returned, with more gusto than ever before rediscovering his love for music and releasing what can be seen as some of his best work to date.

Electronic dance music comes in many shapes and sizes now, many hues and shades, but sometimes a basic directive is all you need. The strobe flashes. The kick-drum booms. The music makes you wiggle. 

Unlike a lot of by-numbers techno missives, Jon Carter’s ‘The Strobe’ doesn’t forget that it’’s a dance track designed to make people dance. It might lurk in the dark recesses at first, illuminated by sporadic, split-second percussive flikkers; it might then kick like a mule; it might inhabit a sci-fi netherworld with machine elves and robodogs. But when it kicks back in, it undeniably has da funk. Some disco-funk. It’s techno-disco, and Sven-from-Berghain only knows that techno needs some sparkle more than ever at a time like this. 

Jon Carter says: “‘The Strobe’ is completely influenced by the nights I spent in Body & Soul in New York, as well as NYC Downlow in Glastonbury, by the sweat pouring off the ceilings in basements in Derry, and those moments, when you’re completely disorientated on the dancefloor. I hope it moves your body and f*cks with your mind.” 

Dylan Earl Barnes, one half of UK house heroes Mutiny, remixes it in a jackin’ house stylee, complete with some nifty 808 snares and a tribal sensibility.

An old skool inspired breakbeat, street-real anthem for today about the dualities of inner city life. 

One of the hottest new names in electronic music right now, Martin Badder has released on highly respected labels such as Crosstown Rebels, Repopulate Mars, Renaissance, Nervous Records, Strictly Rhythm, Toolroom, DFTD and more. For his debut release as part of the Jack Said What family, Badder has teamed up with pal MARIA to produce a street-real anthem for these times.
 
Over an old skool breakbeat, vocalist MARIA begins to drop bars about the dualities of inner city life. The track becomes more and more anthemic as it progresses, sitting somewhere between Little Simz and The Streets in its depiction of urban existence. MARIA doesn’t hold back with her rhymes — so understandably the label asked for a shorter, clean edit for radio play as part of the package. It’s old skool but it’s new skool.
 
‘No Two Ways About It’ is the first release on Out Yer Box, the sister label to Jack Said What. The new label has been launched to cater for non-4/4 material, whether it be ambient, trip-hop, breakbeat, guitar-driven or whatever. Out Yer Box tracks may not be in your rekordbox to play on the nightclub dancefloor, but the music is still well worth a listen in its varying shades and hues.

One half of leading international breakbeat duo Evil Nine, Tom Beaufoy is due to release his debut solo album. ‘Absolute Melt’. It is an intricately crafted opus that’s being released on Out Yer Box, the sister label to Irvine Welsh’s Jack Said What label. 

The album distils a wide range Tom’s musical influences including breakbeat, soul, funk, hip-hop, hardcore, house, into a succession of breath-taking widescreen beatscapes. 

After the dreamy and innovative debut ’The Heathers’, the second single turns up the energy to deliver a breaks-fuelled, disco-funk opus ‘Give Up (Don’t)’. The depths and breadth of Tom’s production ability really shines through on this diverse album with the release of this supercharged 8.45 mins of super groovy funk, contemporary soul and energetic disco all merged into one track. Primed for the dancefloor, it's bursting with bright guitar and bass licks – crisp drums, big strings and BV’s all amounting to a truly authentic mix that builds to a crescendo and back again. 

EVL Tom was formerly one half of Evil Nine with Pat Pardy, originally signed to Adam Freeland’s label Marine Parade. Their award-winning ‘You Can Be Special Too’ and ‘They Live!’ albums received widespread acclaim and in the process collaborated with such heavy-hitters as El-P from Run The Jewels, Danny Brown, Aesop Rock and Emily Breeze. They were residents at Fabric London, did a BBC Radio One Essential Mix and toured the world several times performing at Fuji Rock Festival, Space in Miami, Twilo in NYC, Coachella and Arcadia at Glastonbury. 

They remixed a whole host of acts such as The Temper Trap, UNKLE, Alex Metric, Timo Maas, Gorillaz and a tonne of others. The Evils also turned in compilation mixes for the ‘FabricLive’ and ‘Y4K’ series, establishing their credentials as one of the most sought-after breakbeats acts in the business in the process. 

Tom now chiefly DJs and produces solo as EVL Tom, has a monthly radio show The Evil Tom Show, and will be celebrating the launch of the ‘Absolute Melt’ album with a big event in his home city of Brighton!
