Pattern Perception is a new artist who has just been signed by Jack Said What. Fuelled by audio psychoactive motifs, he’s an exciting prospect who was discovered by JSW thanks to the Data Transmission demo feedback sessions.

While Pattern Perception is readying his album he hooked up with Jack Said What uber-producer Steve Mac, who saw something in a Patterns track that he could put a new switch on. The resulting house track is massive.

After a percussive build-up with a burbling bass, some synth stabs and a floaty female vox begin to add colour and texture. It’s after the first drop-down that the track really gets into its flow. Classic hands-in-the-air piano keys and then a gentle 303 wiggle send ‘The Colours Of’ off into the celestial heavens. 

Fans of Duke Dumont, Secondcity, Route 94 and the deep, melodic house explosion of a decade ago will lap up this consciousness-expanding kaleidoscopic cut.

The end of a corrupt Tory government in the UK. A dream gig. The next quality release from Jack Said What. They say, ‘Good things come to those that wait’. 

This release by George Reid & Ten Ven also says ‘Good things come to those that wait’. The infectious house track is pivoted by this topline hook, sounding not too dissimilar to an Audio Bullys vocal with its aggy bovver-boy swagger.

However, this is offset by carnivalesque trumpets, a burbling b-line and a feelgood bounce. Wait for the drop — the beats powering back in are worth the wait too.

George Reid & Ten Ven are two highly respected producers who come together for collabs every so often. George used to be in the indie band Colours before making his name as one half of electro-pop duo AlunaGeorge, who had several hits in the early 2010s — including a No.2 smash with Disclosure.

Ten Ven, meanwhile, is an alias of Tom Neville, who has been involved in various projects over his storied career. Tom was once half of Retro/Grade with Jack Said What stalwart Serge Santiago, and was also half of Jack Thunder with Frank Tope, and Muse Zikka and Silver Sonic with his late friend Martin Dawson. 

‘Wait’ is a perfect summer dance record. Don’t wait too long to play this one out.

Rarer than a diamond, ’Emerald’ is the symbol of loyalty, new beginnings, peace and security. And this is a new beginning for new Jack Said What signing — and all-round diamond geezer — Redraft Memories.

Redraft Memories, aka Ricardo Medina, is from Mexico, and first came to JSW’s attention when he worked with Chicago house music legend Chip-E on the remix of label signature tune ‘Jack Said What’ by Steve Mac. He then remixed Steve Mac’s Detroit techno homage ‘The 313’ for the ‘Bless This Acid House’ remix album — to stunning effect. He’s previously released on labels such as Bush, Detone, Alchemy and Bitten, and now comes with his first full single release on Jack Said What.

‘Emerald’ is a techno track, but one that is made with — and is all about — love. It shimmers and undulates and will make a dancefloor bounce; you could play it anytime, but needs to be treated with care. It’s another banger from Jack Said What — let us know what you think of it.

At the turn of 1990s two acid house fiends, Alistair Cook and Dave Beer, started a night in their home city of Leeds in the north of England. With its punk rock attitude, Back To Basics was an instant success. Tragically, Alistair was killed in a car crash in March 1993 but Dave decided to carry the club night forwards in his great pal’s memory.

It was the friendly, community feeling and hedonistic aesthetic that made Basics one of the success stories of the 1990s. Musically, they were on-point: they gave UK debuts to US DJs such as Doc Martin, Derrick Carter and Francois K, early opportunities to Daft Punk, Basement Jaxx and Groove Armada, and helped nurture resident DJs such as Ralph Lawson, Denny, Paul Woolford, Tristan Da Cunha, James Holroyd, Huggy and Burnski. At the centre of the dancefloor madness was Dave Beer — the life and soul of the party, always thinking of others before himself.

Hosting a long-running party is a talent in itself. What a lot of people haven’t realised is that Dave, latterly, has become a great DJ himself, a surrealist painter of some repute, and has dabbled in producing music himself over the years — without ever releasing anything into the outside world. Until now.

2025 will see Dave release his debut album, preceded by a number of top-notch singles. First up comes ‘For The Beloved’, which features some amazing soulful vocals from Chicago house music legend Robert Owens, recorded when he stayed over in Leeds. 

The new year will also see the release of a film and a book about Dave. With his new wife Aimee, who he married at Glastonbury Festival, and legacy assured, everything was looking rosy for Dave. Until he was diagnosed with cancer.

As the cancer was cut out during an operation in early November, Dave had to be taken to intensive care to have a blood transfusion, but he rallied — it’s not the first time he’s diced so closely with death — and recovered in time for Back To Basics’s 33rd birthday party in Leeds in mid-November. And now it’s time to refocus on his art, putting himself squarely in the limelight to receive the plaudits he so heartily deserves.

One of dance music’s true characters, and a fighter, this music by Dave Beer demands to be heard. Proper underground house music with an acid house attitude, Jack Said What is delighted to welcome another legend into the fold.

Jack Said What co-founder Irvine Welsh has known Dave since the 90s, while Steve Mac and Dave Beer have also had long associations with the Basics man. When he said he wanted to send his album over, it was received at JSW HQ with some trepidation — in case it wasn’t up to scratch — but the guys needn’t have worried. The album is called ‘What Goes Around’, and a nice circular element to the relationship came when Jack Said What and Back To Basics jointly hosted a takeover of the main dance tent at Mucky Weekender in September 2024. Marshall Jefferson headlined, while Dave, Ralph Lawson and the whole JSW crew on deck duties made it a night to remember.

And now comes the music. First single ‘For The Beloved’ has several iterations and, in a few weeks time, will come with a remix by none other than house music pioneer Todd Terry, one of many US house DJs to frequent Basics over the years and leave with a lifetime of memories. It’s a corking first package, a fine way to kick off a priority album campaign for 2025.

Legendary DJ and nightlife icon Dave Beer, the driving force behind the immortal Back To Basics night in Leeds, is about to release his debut album, ‘What Goes Around’, alongside his long-term collaborators The Blessed. This deeply personal and uplifting collection of tracks reflects Beer’s journey through hardship and healing, transforming near-fatal adversity into a testament to the power of music and the human spirit.

The next single in the lead-up to the album is ‘Community’. Formulated on a breakbeat bedding, it’s all about coming together as a community — something that’s always been a part of the Basics ethos, and that took on renewed relevance during the pandemic a few years ago. With the forces of darkness looking to divide people, its message of hope and connectivity feels more contemporary than ever.

‘Community’ is given a high-octane remix by Utah Saints, the legendary duo who are also from Leeds in the north of England — the same city as Dave and the Basics family. The Utahs know Dave from the early days of Leeds nightlife, and have turned in a hands-in-the-air festival-friendly mix that will cause havoc on all manner of dancefloors this coming summer.

Dave had a health scare last year, nearly dying of cancer. He’s now in remission and has converted to Buddhism, a state of mind that’s allowed him to look back on his storied career with a fresh perspective. 

Dave has always preached the power of a clubbing community. Now we have that philosophy translated into musical form, a couple of kick-ass dance tracks that urge us to come together as one. Check them out.
