In the steamy basement of an otherwise unremarkable house in Baltimore, "Fake Flowers Real Dirt" forges their mix of genres from the funk/dope characteristic (e.g.  funk, hip-hop): driving skank reggae moves to frenetic breakbeat/jungle, joined together with a series of quick jazz changes.  Simple melodic lines and hooks give way to solos, with space.

FFRD's efforts began when singer Billy D William marshaled the forces of an accomplished group of veterans from the DMV music scene.  Their goal is nothing less than sonic nirvana - obtained through the melding of diverse musical traditions into a form greater than the sum of its parts. 

Atop the groundwork carefully, yet ruthlessly laid down by drummer Howard "Funkyfoot" Brooks and bassist/sound-man extraordinaire Ethan Montgomery, Billy D William sings skyward with gospel soul, while singer Maddy Waters adds delicious harmonies while increasing the band's class considerably.  Dave Eynck invites listeners into his world with cerebral chord voicings and sound, turntablist ISSAC mashes and scratches (real) vinyl, Gene Chapman and Cullen Waller play searing and soaring horn lines - close your eyes and imagine Cannonball!!! - while Chris Zebal goes from classic hammond to buzzy west-coast style synth and wah filters. Brian Escavage provides percussion and extra drive to the deep rhythms - the icing on an already dope cake!  The group embraces the style nouveau while never forgetting the trivial inequality: 10 seasoned players, still on their way 'round the block > 1 laptop.  

FFRD transcends superlatives; their awesomeness is matched only by their modesty.  From the basement in a house in Baltimore, MD to your ears, "The flyest and the most, as real as non-fiction."

Troy Johnson has made a significant transformation from "hip-hop", to "hot talk", and from the "blogosphere", to the newsroom. Troy has over 20 years of broadcast experience from mainstream urban radio, to talk radio, and news. He and his radio partner Marc Clarke produced a cutting edge live video stream and blog on the Baltimore Sun website. They are also the driving force behind The Breakfast Flakes...the pen name they use to record parody songs.

As a broadcaster Troy's unique point of view and humor has always added a refreshing twist to the issues of the day. Troy served as Executive Director of People 75, Baltimore's public access television station, He teamed up with radio partner Marc Clarke to host a program on Washington DC's WHUR called The Hang Suite. He also hosted The Hang Suite on H.U.R. Voices, channel 141 on Sirius/XM. Troy was a news anchor on 99.1 WNEW, in Washington DC, and presented the 'Talk Around Town' news segment weekly on NBC 4. Currently, he anchors, and reorts the news on Baltimore's WBAL NewsRadio 1090.

Troy's was an original member of The Big Phat Morning Show on Radio One's 92Q, and helped make that show #1 in Baltimore. He then created, and produced The Troy Johnson Show on CBS Radio's FM Talk 1057, a slick and innovative program that was not only funny, but also focused on educating and informing the community. By sparking dialogue and debate, The Troy Johnson Show generated a buzz with the listeners of Baltimore, and beyond. 

Originally from Chicago, Troy is a broadcast veteran, with stints at premier radio stations in Indianapolis, St. Louis, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. He has been recognized for his achievements as a broadcaster with numerous awards and honors including a Marconi Award from the St. Louis Radio Association for Best Male Talent, the 2000 Baltimore Achievement In Radio Awards for Best Morning Show and Best New Talent in Market, The Key to the City of Baltimore in 2002, The Mayor's Business Recognition Award in 2002 for outstanding work on the Baltimore Believe Campaign, and a Governor's Citation in 2006 for his contributions to Maryland. 

Troy attended Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio. He was a two-term President of the Association of Black Media Workers, the local chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists, and also served on the national board, as a regional director.
