Named after a poor English translation of a Salvador Dali painting, Virgin of the Birds treads a line between intimate, lo fi pop and the occasional grandeur of early art rock. Jon Rooney began recording and performing Virgin of the Birds out of the ashes of Morning Spy, an indie pop band he founded in San Francisco, CA during the turbulent middle 00′s. About Virgin of the Birds’ debut EP, Mixed Choir, songs:illinois noted “If you like the rambling folk weirdness of Felt than you’ll no doubt like this as well.”

Winter Seeds, the debut LP release from Virgin of the Birds, is available on vinyl and digital in the UK from Song, By Toad Records and in the USA from Abandoned Love Records.

2014 brings not only the release of Winter Seeds, the first Virgin of the Birds LP, but also the inclusion of two sides of vinyl of the best of the free digital EPs as part of the Song, by Toad Five Years Anniversary Box Set. The Five Years Anniversary Box Set will be available in extremely limited quantities and likely relegated to highly collectible Scottish underground music lore by the time you read this.

Virgin of the Birds released a series of free, download-only EPs through Abandoned Love Records, beginning with Every Rival then followed by Dear Furies, Banquet Years and Fugitive Works. These EPs were entirely written, recorded, mixed and mastered at home and trade on attentive lyrics, general Apocrypha and reverb indulgence.
