Sometimes a track gets played in the Ransom Note office that everyone just wants to hear again and again, not because we all have musical amnesia and need to be reminded what it is we do here, but because it's really, really good. Kudaushe (ft. Kudaushe Matimba) by Afriquoi has been one of those tracks. The vocal melody is so evocatively wistful, the percussion provides a beat that makes your feet just do their own thing, and organic sounds convey the meaning of this project as a means to explore many of the musician's varied heritages in a poignant and beautiful way. Yes, it's worth writing a cheesy sentence like that about it. Fine, if you don't like us being cheesey, how about we write our usual old fare eh? Ok, so, we like biscuits and cats. Cats like cat biscuits too. But biscuits feelings are not generally known. Happy now? No, neither are we. 
Afriquoi is a project based in London with musicians of all kinds of backgrounds, influences and experiences. Congo-born guitarist Fiston Lusambo is known affectionately in the group as ‘Papa Fiston’ and Kora player Jally Kebba Suso was born in Gambia into a family of traditional musicians and storytellers of the Manding empire that can trace itself back 74 generations. Born in London of mixed Jamaican, French, Ghanaian and Scottish Heritage, vocalist Andre Espeut was greatly inspired by the acid house sounds he encountered in his youth, whereas percussionist André Marmot grew up listening to garage, drum and bass, hiphop and jazz in London before he started learning West African percussion. Producer, Musical Director and band leader Nico Bentley was a live producer and bass player for Seal in the 90s.
The album Kolaba is coming out 11th September. Safe to say, we're pretty excited about this project!

Its a bold and brave producer who takes on the task of remixing a stone-cold classic cut from the annuals of House history, but thats just what Joris Voorn, KiNK, Phil Weeks and Ambivalent have done with their fresh versions of DJ Dozia’s Ovum debut ’Pop Culture’. 

Originally released back in 1998 ‘Pop Culture’ rapidly gained cult status on the underground. Created by fellow Philly resident Dozia Blakey, the raw and sparse original, at over ten minutes, was made for the dark, strobe-lit, sweat-on-walls rooms where it found favour. Backed by the equally popular Size-9 remix, ‘Pop Culture’ was, and still is, a record that never leaves the box for many. Now, with a fresh set of remixes, its set for a glorious return. The original twelve inch is still one of the most sought after twelve inches on discogs. 

So what did persuade our set of remixers to take on this challenge? Well, lets ask them…

Ambivalent - "Pop Culture is one of my all-time favorite records, not just on Ovum, but in the history of dance music. I regularly hassled Josh about finding the parts because I always wanted to just play with them. When he finally found them on an old DAT, I went crazy. It is an insurmountable challenge to improve on the original, all I could do was pay homage in my own way.”
Whether its staying respectfully close to the original or taking it admirably in a new direction, we think you’ll agree that this is one of the most complete and spectacular remix packages of the 2015.

Last year's '4' album saw Mr. Luke Vibert's first venture as Kerrier District in over a decade. And a successful venture it was at that – with the album becoming into an essential long player, and ranking as one of Bleep's top albums of 2015, Now, to mark Hypercolour's 50th single release, four of electronic music's heavyweights have brought forward three strong reworkings of 4: Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer, Head High (aka Shed) and RA Best Live Act of 2015, KiNK – whose remix comes up trumps in our eyes.

In his take on album favourite, "Techno Disco", KiNK deploys a spacey synth melody and a Reese-style bassline – transforming it into an energetic peaktime track, with elements not falling sonically far from a UR record.

Berlin-based Marlon Hoffstadt's newest offering comes in the form of the four-part Smile EP, out on his own Retrograde label he co-runs with Natureboy Gold. Smile is a collaborative release with Paris Brightledge, a pioneer of Chicago house whose vocals were also on both "Paris Dub 1" and "2" by Paranoid London.

The release includes two original cuts from the duo, and their respective reworkings by Matteo Luis and Kris Wadsworth. "Smile" is counteracted with our pick, "Lies". This B-side shows off Hoffstadt's well versed club music rhetoric, with the track being pushed continually forward by propelling 303 melodies and heavily laden percussion. A story is explored in Paris' lyrics, as he discusses how coming from the ghetto doesn't always allow a freedom of feelings in life or in love.

Smile (RTGD002) drops on 1st February. Each copy comes with a full cover artwork by Hermann Reimer.

Panthera Krause's music-making habits teeter on the precipice between moody and outright fun house; a technique which has done wonders for the Leipzig melody maker since his early years. The mould was set with his weekly podcasts and 2012's "Cassandra" on local imprint O*RS. Then further solidified via the Yorikke EP in 2013 - a three-track mid-summer trip on Riotvan - and the delights of his Rules EP (2014) on Lobster Theremin and the Laika EP (2014) on Riotvan.

The Uncanny Valley connection was established during the back end of last year. The pumping “Coochie” formed part of the Uncanny Valley: Five Years On Parole release and was quite the foretaste. And here we arrive at "Umami"; a lesson in colourful and let-loose four-to-the-floor which first saw light on our recent Dresden show with the UV fam.

To our delight, African funk master Jagger Botchway has been busy in the studio, getting to work on a rare soca and highlife record with a number of musicians he collaborated with from various points of his career. Cultures of Soul have striven to find a host of relevant remixers to match up to Jagger's achivements. These names, already schooled in the colourful sounds of Afro-funk, feature Berlin's Africaine 808, Switzerland's Alma Negra, New York's Names You Can Trust and Manchester's Ruf Dug – whose "Tight Disco Dub" of "Moko Le Dzen" trumps the rest as our favourite. Heavily led by a percussive backbone, the rework takes us on an intercontinental journey of instruments, between African drumming patterns and a conventional Western drum kit. This is further invigorated by a reverb-rich trumpet line and a synth line peppered by chordal stabs throughout. A surefire way to ensure a workout on any dancefloor.
