The Berghain resident talks about re-queering the goth scene, exploring a lighter side of his sound and preparing for marathon closing sets.

Hayden Payne, AKA Phase Fatale, grew up fully immersed in the world of music; his dad is a recording engineer and musician, as are many members of his family. After joining post-punk outfits like Dream Affair and consuming a diet of new wave and synth from parties like Wierd in New York, Payne eventually relocated to Berlin, where he saw possibilities emerge around ways of fusing guitar music with sounds for the dance floor. It was only shortly after relocating that he landed a residency at Berghain and began releasing his own productions as a techno artist, becoming known for darker-edged sets and productions that fuse industrial, EBM and techno.

In this episode of the RA Exchange, he talks to senior producer Chloe Lula about all of this and more, like "re-queering" the goth scene; exploring a lighter side of his sound with his Italo duo, Soft Crash; his label, BITE Records; and sustaining strong ties to dance floors in Kyiv and Tbilisi, two cities that he reflects as being refreshingly socially and politically motivated for queer artists living in the margins. "The Birth of Mist" is set at the beginning of a water steam, in the morning of the world. The artist continues to draw attention to living beings, using a luminous vocabulary. The listener is bathed in colorful sounds and rhythms, contemplating a liquid, shifting landscape that the mist reveals in bits over the course of the 9 compositions.

The story is written and told as you listen, the sounds appear and disappear, each composition inhabits you. The progression of the album is formed of blurred contours, inviting us to tirelessly follow these misty sonic paths.

Sacha Ketterlin is a Berlin-based sound artist with a distinctive musical vision. Born in Switzerland and raised in France, he has called Berlin home since 2008. 

Classically trained as a pianist, he has since become renowned for his immersive, richly textured electronic soundscapes.

Deeply influenced by techno and rave culture, Sacha Ketterlin fully immersed himself in the electronic music scene, organizing techno parties and Ambisonic events with a strong emphasis on live performance. His passion for innovative sound experiences is also reflected in his creative projects. He is the driving force behind Intumi and Higher Resonance, platforms that bring his vision of sound to life.

Fandango’s beloved Aquarium dancefloor isn’t confined to any specific genre but rather embodies an entire colourscape and aesthetic, guided by a 115 BPM restriction. Some of the most thrilling ideas emerge from spaces of limitation, and it is here the Aquarium has found its much-celebrated groove.

The Aquarium V/A Vol. i features 15 tracks spanning the entire scape of this amphibious dancefloor. The compilation surges through a journey into the minds and waves of 17 producers, navigating an underwater sound consistent in its diversity. From the wobbling pulse of Big Leg’s Jelly Dub Luv (ft. RexL) to COLA REN’s dreamy seabed roll, the filmic nostalgia of eoin DJ’s Things In Life, and the more danceable sound of E-Talking’s Être un autre ohm, each track is a love letter to every corner of the Aquarium’s deep blue.

The selection is curated by the team behind Fandango, and will be donating all profits to the marine conservation charity Blue Ventures. The charity was chosen to contribute back to marine life without which sounds and swells of aquatic bass could not exist. Blue Ventures works with small-scale local cultures and economies to support their natural ecosystems, ensuring a fair distribution of resources.

PREMIERE: The Burrell Connection - Sandy On Mars (Fandango)

Mattia Prete returns to Jazz-o-Tech with a new EP that emphasises the power of collaboration. His dark, abstract Eruption EP blends electronic and jazz sounds and features musicians from the label roster across five edgy tracks.
Prete has been expanding his musical horizons in recent years. After building a solid foundation in techno, he has begun to work across a wider world of electronic and organic sounds while also working closely with formally trained musicians, plenty of whom feature on this EP. 
 
This world has allowed him to express himself more freely and authentically while adapting and responding to new and contrasting settings. From performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival with Daniel Calvi as 505 to DJing in underground venues like Tresor in Berlin, he continues to make innovative connections between different worlds while continuing to bring diverse artists together on this label.
 
As always with his productions, Prete went wherever the music took him with this EP. It follows no trends, is packed with expressionism and draws on deeply personal emotions while once again highlighting that techno and jazz can communicate together in many different ways. The results are cinematic and fluid, run through with dreamy synths but also built on direct and clubby rhythms with an industrial undertone.

Opener 'Nebula' Ft. Aki Himanen and Aleksi Kinnunen is a widescreen sound with live jazz drums and pained sax lingering in the air above fizzing synths. It's roomy but packed with details and ever-increasing drama. 'Solar Approach' ft Alegros rides on rubbery kick drums and has sweeping chords that reach up to the sky where twinkling melodies awake. There's a halfway switch up when breakbeats change the groove and sombre trumpets sweep across the mix.
'Subway Juice' ft. TUN is much more direct and physical. The sax notes are busy and restless, the drums crash hard and the cymbals splash loudly while acid motifs and busy melodic scales play out in a wild frenzy. 'Cactus' brings a punchy jungle rhythm and icy synths bring unease and edginess to the oversized bass, then Prete collaborates with Daniel Calvi and Leonie on 'Palettes'. It's another bold and in-your-face collision of brass, bass guitar, punishing drums and low-end menace that drives into darkness.
  
Jazz-o-Tech is a label that draws on the rich heritage of two of the most visionary and experimental genes in music: jazz and techno. Taking inspiration from the freeform creative nature of those two musical worlds, artists on the label mix tradition with modernity, improvisation with experimentation, and create a new sound known as techno-jazz. Modern music needs to be ambitious. It must aim to deliver a musical message which is one step beyond what has already been heard. It must take you on a new musical journey into unknown dimensions and emotions. That is the Jazz-o-Tech mission.

Imagining a regal ballet of geese and swans. Crafted out of artistic frustration following a return from an impromptu mid-winter trip to Nepal, GOSSE was born. I looked up the etymology of "Gosh", to discover it may have originated from a word, "Gosse". Unusual instruments were coaxed in different ways, and multiple different vibes emanated, linked together for an adventurous cinematic, seemingly downtempo and "IDM" journey.
