Revelation

A plaintive song built up using the sounds of manipulated freezers: field recordings made in Gratton Way, Sainsbury's frozen food section. I wanted to explore the idea of belonging and non-belonging in a place that doesn't want you there.

Eremocene.

This song started with the sound of slowed down insect wings and me tapping on the railings of New Bridge in Barnstaple, North Devon, UK, which is a notorious suicide spot. It was inspired by the story of Kevin Hines who jumped from The Golden Gate Bridge and survived. The light behind the heart comes from the Hindu concept of Hridaya, the place where mind, speech and life energy emanate.

This track emerged from the idea of trance, possession and dissociative experiences of inside "others" that I'd been experiencing and cultivating.  I wanted the drums to be kind of primal, and reflect the idea of our lizard brain dealing with the non-place in day to day life, a place that can easily kill us without warning. I was also interested in the concept of naming all the names - a theme that has been running through public life recently in the UK, France and US  and in the naming of the dead in other conflicts and countries around the world. I found myself asking would I name all the names if I had the chance to? I hope that I would.

Unmixed and unmastered, mostly just needed to get it out of my system. The title is a mix of english and german, 'gift' in german means poison so it felt like a nice play on words for a topic so abhorrant.

Based on a series of true(ish) stories. An exploration of the limits of our sense of our own species - primal beats in a cave bashing out soundwaves; calling in primal neanderthal stomping spirits and shapeshifting animist possession. It's all in the floor toms because bass drums are too tied to the production line. Get in touch with your inner wolf!
