Jæger Mix is about the seamless transitions and how that connection extends beyond the music and the DJ to the people on the floor, with the focus on downtempo, progressive and deep; and it’s various interpretations. Fredfades is the ultimate musical polymath. A record producer, DJ, label boss and artist, he’s got his fingers in so many pies in Oslo’s scene it’s hard to keep track of everything. Whether he’s rapping on- or producing tracks for Toyen Holding or working on his many Mutual Intentions’ affiliated projects, there’s always something happening in the world of Fredfades and it’s always different than the last.

It’s reflected in his DJ sets too, and whether, he’s playing high energy House, or rare Boogie records there’s always something unique that he brings to every situation. It was the same for this Jaeger mix. Going into deeper realms than we’ve heard him go in recent times, Fredfades delivers a mellow set, moving between pastoral textures and low-slung grooves. It evokes the early moments of a burgeoning dance floor with Fredfades programming a serene mood throughout his hour-long turn at decks.

The mix draws us into autumn with sonic hues of a dusky summer coming to an end, bringing to a close a busy season for our DJ. Touring a fair bit, in and outside of Norway, Fredfades has had a demanding schedule this summer, but the year is far from over for the mutual intentions man.

It’s been a minute since we’ve had any news from Olefonken on these pages, and that’s a minute too long. The drummer, producer, synth wizard, label owner and DJ, is a constant source of new music, whether from himself, his band Hubbabubbaklubb, his DJ sets, or his label, Snorkel and even though we might not have heard much from him recently, he’s still crafting and facilitating good music. It’s like the old adage, if a tree falls in the woods and there’s no-one to hear it, does it make a sound. Yes it does and just like that you can be guaranteed, that Olefonken is tinkering on some project as I type this.

Since we last had Olefoken on these pages, he’s re-issued his classic record, Ubuntu Tutu, put out an entire LP of Hubba remixes and a host of new music from his table of Snorkel residents. We haven’t had him in the booth as often as in the past,  but in that he is still a unique presence in Oslo.

For this edition of the Jaeger mix, he takes us deep into the night, with a mix that builds on the energy of each track, as he pursues the dance floor. Those melodic strains of his own music follows enigmatic channels to other musical territories. From balearic isles to squirmy IDM and towards high energy House, Olefonken traces a unique path through his record collection.

In many ways O. Blom (previously Ra-shidi) has come full circle. She’s back in the spot where, for all intents and purposes, her DJ career started. It was here in our sauna, when still living in Tromsø that she made her debut in Oslo and the Jaeger Mix served as the introduction. A lot has transpired since then. A sojourn to Bergen, a new DJ moniker and the eventual return to Oslo, but some things have remained unchanged.

Just like her first Jaeger Mix, O.Blom’s selections pivot around “percussion heavy music” with glimmers of heady melodies sparkling in the upper registers. We gleam striking sonic curiosities weaving their way through measured rhythms that coax more than they hurry to the dance floor. There’s a serenity that undercuts the impulsion, carting the listener off into a trance-like narrative through this music. Snippets of vocal a capellas lifted from some unknown context emerge through miasmic textures and that all-defining percussive element.

Much of the same appeal of her original Jaeger Mix remains, while her natural evolution as a DJ has only fortified her abilities and strengthened her artistic identity as a selector. O. Blom’s star has only risen since, cementing her reputation as one of Oslo’s most sought-after selectors. We caught up with her to talk about changing her name, her experiences between Norway’s major music cities and just how things have gone full circle for the DJ.

As Olanskii often likes to say, Jaeger is more than just bricks and mortar, it’s people. One of the people that has been a significant presence within this construct is Dara Woo. She’s been a lynchpin at Jaeger since its very early days as a guest, a member of staff and most recently a DJ. 

She’s channeled her entire experience of the dance floor through this latest pursuit and has already garnered a following around Oslo, playing places like Jaeger and a fair few distinguished venues and parties over the course of the last year. She’s astounded with her sets at Jaeger with an innate understanding of the club’s audience it seems. 

Her appearance at the Jaeger Mix was an inevitability and without coercion or any sort of pressure she set out for a two hour long set that was just too good to cut. She traverses the wide arching palette of any given night at Jaeger, with elements that touch on Acid, Trance, Techno and Deep House with the only common denominator being that all-important “beat and bass”.

Oslo’s nightlife is currently a hive of activity. DJs, club spaces and concepts are cropping up in what seems to be on an almost weekly basis. It’s bringing a lot of new music and new approaches to the dance floor, in a post-pandemic era where a whole generation was robbed of the dance floor for two years. In that period they’ve had to recontextualise the dance floor, the DJ and even the club as they started going out again and as they went from the dance floor to the DJ booth, they breathed new life into the scene.

Hetty and J. André are two figures at the heart of this new wave. Hardly novices, both have been active DJs since their teens, and they were one of the first to repopulate the dance floor after the pandemic. There hasn’t been a week at Jaeger where I haven’t seen either Truls Hetty and/or Jørgen André on the guestlist at Jaeger and when they are not on the dance floor they are in a DJ booth somewhere in the city.

One of those DJ booths has been Jaeger’s sauna on a Sunday. Hetty and J. Andrés’ Moving Heads has been settling into our weekly residencies for the summer season and with that we’ve asked them to join our Jaeger Mix alumni for a session. The DJ duo parlay some of that Sunday summer vibes over the course of two hours with a focus on the 90’s era of House music, “clearly reflect(ing)” the sound of Moving Heads. Frenzied percussion, bouncing bass-lines and spirituous textures culminate in this dance-floor focussed mix.

Edvard Normann and Ole HK (Henrik Kristiansen) have been fixtures at Jaeger. Every Thursday they swing the door open to the sauna as the pre-party to the weekend commences with reckless abandonment on a night called Helt Texas, appropriately. 

For the last two years they’ve established a sound and a community around the night with regular DJ bookings, the odd international guest and a crowd that unceasingly succumbs to the dance floor every week. 

As DJs Ole and Edvard’s dance cards are practically full every week, and while Ole is exclusively a DJ (for the time being), Edvard also works as a songwriter and producer for some prominent artists in Norway’s music scene.  

Together they’ve established one of the best Thursday night outings in Oslo, and in this latest edition of the Jaeger mix, they bring the sound of the night to life across two hours. Between minimal grooves and tunnelling progression Ole and Edvard establish a palpable mood in their mix. 

Glistening at the top end and swelling at the lower registers, there’s a fluidity between tracks that pulses with a dedicated rhythm throughout. Through a big system it envelopes and it coerces people to the dance floor in a true representation of a Helt Texas night. They call it “sexy, groovy and sophisticated club music” and in this mix they lay it all on the table for us

Ornella has been a fixture in Oslo’s clubbing scene since before she was a DJ. A regular presence on the dance floors of Villa and Jaeger, Ornella eventually made the leap to the other side of the booth, encouraged by peers that had seen a nascent talent. 

Her presence on dance floors are still consistent, but in recent years she’s been orchestrating it, rather than participating in it. Known for sets that cultivate mood and atmosphere, Ornella has been a favourite in DJ booths around Oslo and further afield. When she’s not in the booth she’s facilitating the scene with her work as the booker for Gehor, adding to the rich sonic landscape of the city. 

Ornella makes her debut on Jaeger Mix with a 2 hour sonic journey through House music’s extended reach in an atmospheric and airy progression.

Ronya is part of the next generation of DJs setting Oslo’s dance floors alight. A regular fixture amongst the Det Gode Selskab collective and beyond, these past few years, she’s staked a claim in the minimal landscape of the city’s House and Techno universe. 

She arrives at the Jaeger Mix pursuing the sound we have come to recognise from the DJ. With sonic aesthetics that err on the side of the stark, and styles that reach far beyond the archetypal, there’s no one distinction that sets this mix apart, but the sound remains consistent. 

Whether breaking up the conformity of a beat or importing elements from divergent genres, Ronya‘s musical trajectory follows like a dialogue with the dance floor. It keeps everything grounded in the rhythm – possibly indicative of Ronya’s drumming roots – but it allows for expression beyond the functional.

Synne is part of the next generation of selectors coming through in Oslo, carrying a torch for all things Disco and House as she makes her way to the fore. Whether playing in the Schmooze and Brus ensemble or alongside Don Quan for Nightflight, she has been a regular fixture in Jaeger’s booth over the course of the last year and makes her way to the Jaeger mix today. 

The Oslo DJ brings an accessible sonic style to the recorded mix for the first time, hitting a  “playful” stride towards the dance floor. Familiar melodic motifs crop up in modernised four to floor rhythms. Funk-driven machine bass lines and disembodied vocal samples cut through the rollicking grooves, at times evoking that French filter sound or Norwegian space-disco epoch. It’s updated for contemporary dance floors in tracks that cut right to the core.

Don Quan is another in a long list of newcomers that has been lighting up our dance floors in the last year or two. Alongside the likes of Synne and Schmooze and Brus, the DJ is currently contributing to the rich sonic tapestry of Oslo’s club music scene. 

It’s contained within his contribution to the Jaeger Mix, going from those metallic digital sounds of Paul Hardcastle in the eighties to modern Garage rhythms. Everything is contemporised with a modern production sheen that ties disparate genres and styles together. 

Like his DJ counterparts there’s an all-embracing foundation to his musical tastes that permeates this generation’s DJ mixes. The sponge-like manner in which he and the like  absorb influences, is channeled into individual sounds with a laser-like focus on the dance floor. A familiar presence on either side of the booth, Don Quan’s experiences on either side of the booth is cemented in this mix. 

Don Quan is something of MC Kaman protégé, following the unbridled encouragement, if not the advice of the latter. We know little else of the newcomer and took the opportunity to find out more while we listen back to his Jaeger mix.

Fabian Berg is the latest addition to the Jaeger’s lineup, both in the booth and behind the bar. The newest member of our team, has already left an indelible mark on the dance floor, with a stint at M.A.D Tuesdays, filling in for Axel FU and regular appearances across our weekly residences.

Fabian Berg ticks all the boxes across his 2h stint at the Jaeger mix, from the downtempo balearics to squirming acid, playing between the old and the new. A hardware aesthetic reigns supreme with drum machines and synthesisers working in swinging tandem in a resonant pulse to the dance floor. As an extension of his production efforts there is a definite sonic identity to his works, with his future prospects looking very promising indeed.

The young artist and DJ is making an early mark already, and we look forward to much more from him in the upcoming future, but first some questions.

JM#223 - Fabian Berg

Chugging rhythms and a sonic dialect that stretches the known globe come together in a sound like no-other in Oslo. It’s the sound of Epiphany, a DJ collective and event that has taken root in the Norwegian capital with a uniquely diverse background informing the aesthetic. 

A regular fixture in the city’s nightlife, including Jaeger’s weekend lineup, Epiphany is a multi-cultural group of DJs consisting of Epifanov (Alexandru), Mulo (Fabien), Lorentz Bodega (Stian) and Ihle (Marius). Their diverse background is reflected in their sound which is reflected in the aesthetic they bring to their events and the audience they attract.

They’ve created an inclusive community on the dance floor with their personal tastes coalescing around a global village of sound. They’ve garnered an appeal amongst dancing emigré to the city, drawing many to their nights, with the faint sounds of a nascent home echoing through their House and Tech-leaning DJ sets.

Bergen artist and DJ House on Sale comes to the Jaeger mix, and we’re definitely buying what he’s selling. Rooted in House music, but clearly expansive in his definition of the genre, House on Sale’s mix permeates with soulful and organic sounds as he travels from Disco to Deep House across 2 hours.

House on sale is a rising star on Bergen’s House music scene, and his night, Disco Paradiso and regular appearances in the city’s DJ booths have made fixture. For his first visit to Oslo, he takes on the Jaeger mix with effortless charm, channelling his sound into 2 hours during his session.

Over the past few weeks we’ve become content again in the fact that a familiar face is appearing in Jæger’s booth. Olefonken is back ladies and gentlemen and after a short stint in London, during which time he released the amazing Quaaludes EP, he is back at Jæger assuming his residency amongst Celius, Oskar Pask and Ricky Late. To mark his return Ivaylo pushed him into the booth for the Æ mix and boy was it a welcomed sound. Olefonken’s charismatic diversity in the booth shines through yet again, calling on elements of Funk, Disco, House and Afrobeat, all tied together with the DJ’s distinguished ability to find a clear path from the past to the present. There’s a quirky charm to the personality behind the music and his selections, something universal that he expresses here through swing beats and beguiling melodies that conspire around low slung tempos for this particular mix. It’s a mix as easy as a Sunday morning… or a Wednesday afternoon and it will certainly keep us in good company until the next Æ mix comes comes to town.

“I’m just waiting on the artwork” says Olefonken when I quiz him on the mythical Hubbabubbaklubb album. I remember speaking to lead singer Morten Skjæveland about the release in the summer of 2016, to which he replied something like: “whenever Olefonken feels ready to let it go”. Something of a musical perfectionist, Olefonken’s obsession with Hubbabubbaklubb’s debut LP has left us all on tenterhooks, while his solo releases like Quaaludes on his Snorkel imprint has kept us entertained in the meantime. 
A wispy, blonde figure, Olefonken is a regular feature at Jæger where he plays alongside Celius, Ricky Late and Oskar Pask as the R.L.O.C collective and a prominent feature on Oslo’s DJ scene. His mixes are vast, expansive journeys through the entire musical universe with an innate connection to the audience. 
On his edition of the Jæger mix Olefonken takes us on a dreamy trip through an early Sunday evening with a selection that goes from from Elvis to Aphex Twin. It’s a mix that moves through time like liquid, with ethereal slide guitars dripping from break-beat percussive arrangements or ghostly vocals flitting through ambient textures.
The tracks hop from one end of the musical spectrum to the next and Olefonken weaves them together like a soundtrack, where they attempt to communicate some surreal narrative rather than pander to the dance floor. It’s like the first chapter of a story that leaves us cliffhanging at the end as it draws to an open-ended conclusion when a regular rhythmic measure sets the tone for some  intangible musical evening ahead.

JM#083 - Olefonken

Exclusive to the blog this Friday, comes Mr. Scruff’s extensive set recorded last week at Jæger. It was the legendary DJ’s second visit in as many years and G-Ha & Olanskii were there again to welcome him to their residency and offer the keys to our basement for the entire night. 

Settling into the basement, Mr. Scruff stayed the duration of the night, opening the floor and taking his audience on a journey through the weird and wonderful mind of Mr. Scruff. Nothing is left uncharted in Mr.Scruff’s expansive musical universe, with a varied, yet distinct approach to genre and style that has become his trademark over his considerable career.

You can hear Mr. Scruff plot a course through the night, but he’s clearly moving with the mood and the energy of the room. A stint focussing on the sounds of Reggae and Hip Hop might follow Disco and then transform into Jazz, the experience of the veteran DJ showing a hand in the seamless soundtrack he creates from beginning to end.

Mandagsklubben is the longest serving residency at Jaeger. It started life at Fisk & Vilt over ten years ago and in the years it’s been active it’s become an institution in the city. At the centre of Mandagsklubben is Brokesteady, a DJ crew made up of Davidow, Jeff Niels and André Bravo; three DJs whose individual tastes coalesce over a broad spectrum of music made for the dance floor.   

Mandagsklubben is only one aspect of André Bravo’s extensive and versatile output as a DJ, which sees him play three to four times a week in and around Oslo, where his sets can go anywhere from the marauding beats Techno to the soulful exaltations of modern R&B. A DJ with an extensive background in music and DJing which extends from scratching to appeasing various dance floors across the capital, André Bravo is flexible in any situation and you never know which direction he might take you into next.

And that was the case when he showed up at the Jaeger Mix for the first time last Sunday. So what would it be on this occasion…Hip Hop, Deep House, Minimal Tech? It was none of the above and quite a surprise when Bravo showed up with a collection of liquid Drum N Bass on his thumb drive.

Sparkling hi-hats, rumbling kick-snare combinations are pieced together into ferocious breakbeats that are smoothed over with soft pads and subtle melodic treatment. A vocal is never too far away in Bravo’s mix as soulful vocals croon over the ecstatic beat arrangements. André Bravo steadily ramps up the energy in his mix, breaking only  briefly with a filtered bass growl, before subsiding again into the languid waters of liquid Drum n Bass

After years of waiting and pleading and hoping, Skatebård’s seminal track “Conga” was finally repressed on the 12″ format. Sex Tags Mania repressed the 2005 original for the first time in 2019 with prices for the original pressing reaching eye-watering numbers on discogs. Don’t worry though your investment is safe if you bought the original since the new version contains a different remix, but even though that track has played an instrumental role in sky-rocketing the career of Bård Aasen Lødemel, it was only on the merits of his skills and his sets that he has become such a fundamental figure in the booth today.

A regular fixture at Jaeger  Skatebård joined us again two weeks ago, channeling that jovial Skatebård spirit through a pair of decks and a mixer. On this occasion our basement set the scene and the mighty sound system projected that infectious enigma that is a Skatebård set at Jaeger.

Cruising on the cosmic waves that permeated in the wake of Disco, Skatebård’s Friday night set traversed the planets on a propulsion of analogue synthesisers and drum machines. Occupying the booth for two hours, Skatebård travelled from eighties synthwave, through 90s breakbeat House and early Trance in a set that spanned a great expanse of electronic music, channeled through the DJ’s inquisitive and unique musical assemblages. An extroverted set, Skatebård clearly had his sights set on a high-energy dance floor with set that will leaving you bouncing in your seat as you listen back to the recording today.

BLCK affiliate and Deep-Tech aficionado Julie Reistad makes her debut on the Jaeger Mix with a selection of tracks that traverse the emotive depths between Techno and House music. Frosty atmospheres and piercing melodic highs contrast chasmic excavations in the lower frequencies where the bass a kick drum reside. 

Stephan Bodzin and the Life and Death label create touchstones that in still a particular mood throughout this mix. Thriving in minimalism and a vacuous ether, Reistad favours wispy layers punctuated by immense grooves. Progression is key in her selections with tracks floating toward an unknown destination, with Reistad’s selections following the peaks and troughs of her own narrative. Her set follows the contours of an early evening at Jaeger laying the foundation for the rest of the night ahead. 

Julie Reistad is a prominent figure on the Oslo DJ circuit and as a producer.  She plays every week around Oslo making regular appearances at places like Villa and Storgata 26, hosting events like Desperate Housevibes. She’s also a regular guest at Jaeger’s Mandagsklubben.

The jaeger mix returns! It’s a new and improved version, including live acts, live streaming and of course the recorded mix sessions by some of Oslo’s most enduring and hotly anticipated DJs and producers. Moving to select Wednesdays, the Jaeger mix or Æ Mix  finds a new home with resident DJ Ivaylo at the helm of his residency once again. Living beyond the immediate and documenting Jaeger’s sound, the Jaeger Mix series is a club night and a recorded mix series. Ivaylo programmes a journey into the deepest recesses of club music and beyond with selected guests, a Kodak moment in time of club music in Oslo.
