We met Phillip Lauer two years ago in the heart of the red-light district in Frankfurt, the Bahnhofsviertel. It was a night to remember. Lauer played alongside Robert Johnson's Ata in a small club called Lido. The last track he put on was the singalong-classic "Die Erde wird der schönste Platz im All" by the Berlin band Mutter. Love, no, truth poured out of the speakers. The next day, the two of us would do the silliest interview the city of Frankfurt had ever heard. Lauer, of course, is the "melody man" known to us as that Tuff City Kid and Arto Mwambe djunglist. He delivered a gorgeous mix for us. And we did another silly interview with him.

Listen back to a live recording from our booth with Skatebård. A week ago the Norwegian DJ stopped off at g-HA & Olanskii’s Frædag and laid down an eclectic, energetic mix in the only way he can. 2 hours of pure Skatebård ensues, with elements of House, Disco and Balearic milling around energetic 4-4 beats.

There’s a stark correlation to his own work, and even when he is not playing something from his own extensive back catalogue of original material, remixes and edits, the music is transported to the vast reaches of the cosmic realm on a bed of eighties synthesisers and galloping sequences.

Skatebård’s transitions from one tracks to the next are a marvel to behold, and going from synthetic Disco, to Synth Wave to nu-disco, there’s a very eccentric and idiosyncratic thread weaving itself through the entire set. It’s the perfect start to the weekend.

Q: Hi Biko, thank you so much for sharing a very joyful tip of your far-stretching record collection with us in this podcast episode. We can not wait to invite you for a real-life session to share your love on a dancefloor with us. Is there a record that stands out for you personally in this mix? 

If I have to choose one song from this mix it would be Yemba Aba by Ghanian artist Kojo Frimpong on the album Megye Mani. A wonderful piece of digital Highlife with hints of Synth-Pop and Electro. It has such an amazing drive combined with those lyrics which will send everyone to another dimension. Fun fact about this record, it got recorded at Black and White Studio in Muiden and released on the Dutch label Bigstof Production.

Q: What is the first record that you’ve ever bought, and do you still play/listen to it? 

The first record I ever bought was Fatima Yamaha’s classic What’s A Girl To Do. As a dj I don’t use it at all because my taste in music has shifted a lot since I bought that record but I occasionally put it on for listening pleasure. The vocal sample which is the voice of Scarlett Johansson gets me every time. It is sampled from the film Lost In Translation, an amazing movie about the loneliness of two characters who wander through an immense, chaotic city of which they do not speak the language or understand the culture.

Q; Who is currently your favorite producer?

Since I mainly play music from the 80’s and 90’s it will be a producer from that era. The producer who is one of my favorites has got to be Don Laka. He has released some amazing solo LP’s, but also produced a lot of music for other musicians in South Africa such as Brenda Fassie. He was also one of the main producers of Kwaito in the 90’s, in that time he also co-launched the record company that was to become Kalawa Jazmee. Kwaito has to be one of my favorite genres which emerged in the Townships of Johannesburg and it is heavily influenced by Hip Hop, Jazz, Ragga, and House.

Q: What is your favorite record shop?

My favorite record shop has to be Rush Hour in Amsterdam. They have an amazing selection for dj’s. If you like Techno, go to Rush Hour. If you like Disco, go to Rush Hour. If you like World music, go to Rush Hour. Besides all the new releases, they also have an amazing second-hand collection which gets updated every Monday around 12:00 p.m. so check their store or site! And last but not least, the instore sessions they used to have prior to corona.
