Come with your olde uncle Slaggy on a voyage to the Land of the Deep where the wild Slagbats roam. You'll need a head lamp, shovel, hammer(in case shit gets nasty) and of course...a towel. But be warned if you're looking for an all night rave this mix is not the one for you, over the course of the last 6 weeks or so it's slowly taken over my life and evolved in to what is now an unapologetically heads down, elbows up tear-jerker of a ride that I hope you enjoy.

Slagbat - Voyage To The Land Of The Deep

Despite a flurry of technical issues this mix lives on. It was recorded in the Apartment of Sin and we were honoured to have it air on Matt Pond's fantastic MHYH Deepsystems radio show on 16/09/2013. Sadly the archive from the live show was lost forever because the signal kept dropping but here is our hour as it was recorded on that emotional dusty September weekend.

The mix is rough round the edges but warm on the inside, like a McDonalds apple bake. It was hustled together over one long weekend as me and Kris got back to grips with playing music together after a summer of moving out, tears and limited record purchases. Whilst it may not be our smoothest mix it has already found a place in our hearts and hopefully you'll hold it close to your chest and whisper to it gently. It may also be one of the most honest representations of Jagger and the Bat early doors at Arthouse where we try to lull you onto the dancefloor with tender loving care.

Jagger and the Bat - Deepsystems Radio Show Guest Mix

This is a mix we did for a Berlin radio show but it never made it to the air so about 8 months later we thought fuck it and have decided to upload it.

It's got more purpose and techno than any of our previous mixes not to mention enough balloon tunes to send you into the stratosphere. So grab yourself a towel, some canisters, your favourite dispenser and get ready to buzz.

Jagger and the Bat - Where Deflated Balloons Lie

It's been a long time since I posted a mix but after a [mostly] enjoyable battle I was finally able to put something together that I'm really happy with and excited to share.

I had wanted to do something a little slower for a long long time but never managed to see it through. Then about about 4 weeks ago I decided to dedicate myself to the task and spent a few hours each day over a weekend going through all of my records, picking out anything that I could get to roughly the speed I wanted and then tried to figure it out from there. And try I did. The end result, I hope you'll agree, is a slow burning backroom teaser for those looking to escape the madness of the main room and spend a little quality time with their strange uncle Slagbat. A cheeky stomper, you might say.

I would also like to give a big ups to my amazing friends who over the last 12 months recommended some of the albums that I found tracks on for this this mix. Also a big bark out to The House of Dog for being the best darn record shop/dog house there is.

Jagger and the Bat - A Token Goodbye

And now for something slightly different - but also something we're going to be doing more of too: Muzan is proud to present SBat's opening set from our Subterra party at Osaka's Upsidedown last month. 
SBat began the night right, slowly sinking us in deep with choice choice atmospherics and hypnotizing beats. The party that followed was one to remember and we're delighted to present our listeners with a glimpse of that night.

SBat - Subterra - Live at Upsidedown 17.06.23

This set was recorded live on the night opening from 11pm - 1am for Subterra, something I hope will become a regular thing in Osaka (and hopefully Tokyo). It was a truly amazing night to be a part of and something I spent a lot of time thinking about and getting records together that I hoped I could piece together on the night to suck people in and set the scene for DJ Morita, Lene Andreasen and yu1 (who all played amazingly). The mix is of course a bit rough around the edges, a couple of times I zigged when I planned to zag but hopefully that adds to the charm and the journey as a whole is one you'll enjoy. I know I certainly enjoyed being there and listening back to it brings back memories of what was an incredible night that I won't soon forget.

2nd Hour: Sbat

Recorded in my Tokyo apartment on a couple of 1200s, a lone XDJ and my cherished FF4000 mixer, the mix was slowly put together over the course of a couple of months as I went through almost all of my collection trying to find the right records (old and new). I've always been a big fan of DJs that can keep chugging from one 100bpm obscure number to the next, all the while making all everything sound like it belongs together (e.g. Andrew Weatherall in full backroom swing) and I really wanted to try and create my own version of that where you're taken through different styles, almost without realising (I hope), but whilst keeping the focus on a late night/early morning stomp in the backroom of some weird Tokyo after hours club you probably should have left ages ago...but you didn't...and you still have a few more hours in you.

Gated Podcast 57 // SBat Part 2 // February 2024

Muzan Editions is honored to welcome SBat once more to our growing collection of mixes and sets by friends near and far. For this installment, we present SBat's ambient set at the wonderful Liminal Dreams party in Tokyo (2023.12.10). SBat conjures up a shimmering dreamscape of sounds that warps seamlessly between genre and mood, guiding the listener through nostalgic rememberances, glistening electronic futures, and hazy mirages that elude categorization. We recommend getting very comfortable and organizing some proper listening conditions before drifting off (and drifting deep) into this one.

We'd like to thank the Liminal Dreams crew for signing off on our use of Sbat's set. LD has a special place in the hearts of us here at Muzan. Not only are they an integral part of the flourishing ambient scene in Tokyo, but were kind enough to invite Endurance to their very first event - and Dérive to their latest party last month! SBat - Live at Liminal Dreams

This is the live recording of mine and @raul_rs set from from the 2nd Subterra party we did in August 2024. It followed an amazing live hour long ambient live set by  @joshua-stefane, which you catch the very end of at the beginning of the mix. 

We played from 11 PM to 1 AM, and although it was only the second time we've performed together, it felt like the culmination of countless Friday night sessions at home with nothing but a bottle of Nihonshu (or 3) and our wits (or lack thereof). I hope we'll get to do it again very soon but for now just sit back, relax, and let Rasbat take you on a ride.

Raul and the SBat - Live at Subterra Tokyo August 2024

Here is the first in what I'm hoping will be a regularly recorded mid-afternoon, unplanned mix series alongside my brother from a Spanish mother @raul_rs. And maybe even the odd solo outing too.

But for this first effort we go b2b keeping things below 90bpm as we dip, dive and chug our way through an afternoon, proving to no one but ourselves that "everything sounds better when you slow it down". So unbuckle your seat belt, grab yourself a spanner and prepare to bypass the compressor because the next 2.5 hours we'll be dropping out of light speed with "those weirdos you sometimes see at a festival", Raul and SBat. I've got a bad feeling about this...

Jagger and the Bat - Business Times and Business Lines (GCW Radio Guest Mix)

It's taken over 4 years and enough emotions to take down a heard of yaks to finally record a new solo mix that I'm happy with and here it is. It's a mystical tale of adventure and coming of vibes.

There's no dub techno intro here and the fucker bolts  early and pegs it towards the finishing line. I hope it hits the spot. I'm not going to put a tracklist up but feel free to ask for particular tracks and I'll try and share what I can.

So it's finally time to end the Arhouse SoundCloud account *wipes tears from eyes* for no other reason than to be able to spend the extra $9 a month it was costing on more useful things like black jack and sake. Whilst I sit here in Tokyo desperately waiting for my records to arrive off the boat an old friend stumbled across this mix whilst clearing out her cupboards and sent it across to me. I think it's from around 2006  and I thought I'd put it online for shits, giggles and possibly ridicule. 

At the time of recording this I was big in to the likes of the Inland Knights, Da Sunlounge and allllll that vibe. It is nothing like anything I play now but an enjoyable ride nonetheless and I still like most of the tracks on it (but not quite all). I'd call it a cheeky heads down number with a...shall we say... old Nottingham 'ouse sound (or there abouts). It does admittedly go a bit...err...dubious around 45 mins for around 10 minutes but I'm sure you can push through that till the end.

23 months after moving to Tokyo here is my first mix recorded straight off the [slag]bat one rainy afternoon in Tokyo in my apartment. It's a deep bum tickler compiled almost completely from second hand records I've picked up in Tokyo (and a couple of new releases...albeit of old music). It'll crawl up your spine like a dry sake and whisper seductively in to the back of your brain. So sit down and relax, Slaggy B's gotcha covered for the next hour.

Slagbat - The Reintroduction of DJ Slagbat

This is a mix I did in 2019 for the excellent Skew Whiff night and KMAH radio show as hosted by Dr Joseph and I like to think of it as a sneaky little stealth acid  tickler. Highly recommended to be listened to by the pool but failing that indoors on a rainy day should work just fine (just be sure  to crank the heating up).

Here's a mix we recorded especially for Jane Fitz and her amazing DirtySounds Session radio show that goes out on myhouseyourhouse.net every Monday night from 10pm. The mix was aired on 11/02/2013 and was recorded live around November...we think. 

It was made for the radio with love and rest assured no vinyl was inappropriately touched during the recording, not in a sexual way anyway. We mixed it not long after another show we did for Greta Cottage and wanted to make sure it didn't sound the same. So Kris and I dug out some house bombs, slammed a couple of espressos, dropped a Walt J record right at the beginning and went from there.

We recommend listening to it between the hours 10 and 11 at night, preferably on a Monday, but failing that brew up some fair trade coffee and let the sex music take hold.

Jagger and the Bat - DirtySounds Session Mix 11-02-2012

This Slagbat solo outing was recorded long before Jagger came to the party, some time around 2007 I think (don't believe what the file properties say). I woke up one afternoon as a student and decided to try and record something a little different to what I was playing at the time...so I got pretty baked and jumped straight in, carelessly hitting the record button on my way. Who knew it would turn out to be the beginning of a new age (errrr well kind of musically speaking for me anyway). 

It includes tracks I still play today, some I wouldn't and others I sometimes think about playing. Interesting huh? Anyway, regardless of all that it's still a fun ride and whilst it may not be the important piece of history I claim it was it sure as hell is a lot better than watching Time Team for 2 hours.

Slagbat - The Slaggy B Show

This is a little bit of surprise sex crime that I committed in 2009 whilst Kris was washing his hands of me (or some other more appropriate saying). I seem to remember this mix becoming a huge burden on my life as I tried to put it together without having enough of the right kind of records (not for the first time as you may or may not know). I wanted it to be deeper than a mole with a JCB and I think for the most part I succeeded although it definitely gets above ground towards the end. It's safe to say that it took Kris to breaking point as he had to live with me during the development stages, listening to the same tracks over and over and over and over... 

The most important thing about this mix though is that it shows I was playing deep house way before it got cool so essentially it proves I'm super cool...like ice.

I'd also like to add that the re-uploading of this mix is dedicated to the myth, the legend...Mike Plant (because I believe it still remains his favourite mix of mine).

Slagbat - Premeditated Surprise Sex Crime

If the Slaggy B Show was "the beginning of a new age" then this was the...erm…well…the precursor to the new age? You could compare it to the moment the dinosaurs first looked up and saw a glowing meteorite high in the sky before being blown into a million messy pieces.

Whilst some of my mixes online were recorded without any pre-planning this one certainly was not. I had in my head exactly how I wanted it to be (I even had the name ready) but hit a bit of a brick wall when I realised I didn’t have the records to do it. Over the course of the next 6 months I ransacked all my B sides, started buying a few less Robsoul records and began playing everything I owned at -8. Ultimately what came out of it was a mix that sits proudly up there as Kristopher’s (aka Jagger) favourite mix of mine…of all time.

It was the beginning of the beginning of a new era. A delicate blend of pitched back music that is still faster than most things I play today. And if you close your eyes and think hard enough you can almost taste the calamine lotion.

I also contend that I was the first person in the entire world to start playing that Pepe Bradock remix of mouth but that's for the courts to decide.

Slagbat - Calamine Lotion

I had to upload this one for the title alone. It was recorded back in 2008 for an online radio show (I can't remember which one) when I was trying to move away from "jackin' 'ouse" and towards a bit more credible propa 'ouse sound, Bruv. You could consider it as the DJing equivalent of puberty although that would be a bit weird.

Anyway...I still listen to this mix from time to time and it makes me smile. I think the first half is worth revisiting alone and the last third too. I admit the middle maybe goes a bit too Freerange but at the time I was lapping up everything Jimpster wiped his bum with so it seems right that it's in there. Some of the tracks may not have held up but time makes fools of us all so quit complaining and enjoy the buzz.

Slagbat - Sounds of the Batcave

I considered not uploading this but given that I've become obsessed with mapping out some sort of personal music history today this mix had to be thrown in. I'm listening to it now for the first time in years and rest assured I am loving it. You however, may not.

It is in some ways the musical equivalent of The Phantom Menance. The childish beginning to what I'm sure you'll all be telling your kids was a cracking end. It's funky. It's fast. It's jackin' and it sure as hell is a lot of fun (provided you're not a bit of a cunt). 

Recorded way back in 2006 it is probably the best example of what I bought and played when I first got a set of turntables and had been able to amass a semi-decent amount of records.

Put this mix on when you're home alone cleaning on a Saturday and shake yo thang. It will be our dirty little secret.

Also I would like to make a formal apology to Gemma Jones for the image that goes with this mix. I tried to find something from back in 2006 but fortunately my Facebook doesn't go that far back so I just took the oldest photo I had online. Still, somehow it seems right.
