Belgian-Caribbean provocateur Charlotte Adigéry and her long-term musical partner, Bolis Pupul release their phenomenal debut album Topical Dancer via Soulwax’s iconic label DEEWEE.
 
Cultural appropriation and racism. Social media vanity. Post-colonialism and political correctness. These are not talking points that you’d ordinarily hear on the dancefloor but Charlotte and Bolis have ripped up the rulebook with their debut record. Notes on Tactile Frequenices

This mix is specifically designed to be listened through headphones. There are features of low sound volume and high dynamics in it, so I recommend enjoying the sounds in quiet surroundings.

I am overwhelmed by the creativity and talent of modern day ambient and experimental artists. The wealth of top-notch releases surfacing year after year from these particular fields is awe-inspiring. There are hours upon hours of superb modern music/sound design that could and should be featured in mixes like this, so it is very difficult to decide on a limit. I wanted to mainly include artists that I believe are lesser known, adding works from more established names only as a taste here and there. I also wanted to include some beat-driven tracks that showcase exquisite uses of sound design in a more easily approachable context.

Instead of making the mix a simple track after track gallery of sound art, I've taken the liberty of pressing my own sound design fingerprint here and there. There is slight surgery or manipulation of some kind performed on most of the tracks in the mix, in places where I felt it was beneficial for the overall quality or just to make transitions a bit more interesting. There are sections where I've completely merged two or more tracks with each other to produce a fresh emergent view, that I hope both fans and artists themselves will find exhilarating. Field recordings in this mix are all from Finland.

Function is an aesthetic exploration of digital audio at an elemental level: a sequence of quantized amplitude values. The entire sonic material in this series are generated through a custom-designed program that takes a mathematical function as input, and based on a set of pre-defined criteria, outputs the function as a digital waveform. Accordingly, each track in this series is named after one mathematical function, where the function itself is used as the only sound-generating engine. These raw sonic materials are then processed through a number of common audio effects, and organized and structured into a compositional form.

Function builds on an ongoing investigation into realization of brutalist aesthetics through sound and audiovisual media. Through a reductionist approach towards its distinctly digital sonic structures, the work embraces the crude limitations of its medium as the primary aesthetic construct. It uses mathematically architected tonal and rhythmic structures to allow for a celebratory exposure of its “anti-beautiful" raw material. In doing so, it projects an uncompromising clarity of structure, a conscious negation of interpolation, and a steadfast refusal to hide the machine’s footprint.

Mo H. Zareei aka mHz is an Iranian electronic musician, sound artist, and researcher, based in Wellington, New Zealand. Using custom-built software and hardware, his experiments with sound cover a wide range from electronic compositions to kinetic sound-sculptures and audiovisual installations. Regardless of the medium, Zareei’s work aims to highlight the beauty in the basics of sound and light production and reductionist audiovisual elements that draw inspiration from physical and architectural principles. Over the course of his PhD, he developed a portfolio of works focused on the intersections of sound art and Brutalism. His “Brutalist Noise Ensemble” has been featured on platforms such as Creative Applications, Streaming Museum, and Fast Co.

Zareei has presented his work at international venues and festivals such as SETxCTM Festival (Tehran), New Zealand Festival (Wellington), the International Symposium on Electronic Art (Vancouver), and New Interfaces for Musical Expression (London), to name a few. His installation "Rasping Music" was the recipient of the 1st prize in Sound Art category of the international Sonic Arts Award 2015 (Italy).

Ani Klang is a producer and DJ raised in California, US, honed in New York (where she graduated from the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music), and until recently based in Berlin, who blasted the contemporary underground club scene with her tense and bursting compositions of experimental, hybrid electronic music. Packing her tracks with explosions of structured rhythmic outbursts as well as sudden, chaotic ruptures, Ani Klang already appeared with remarkable works on prominent labels such as Infinite Machine, Knightwerk, Tremors TV, SOFT, and on Hyperboloid records with the stunner Burn the Empire EP, previously presented at CTM Festival's 20th anniversary at Berghain in 2019.

Keen to showcasing elaborate sound design paired with massive kickdrums and stomping progressions, Ani fiercely manufactures tracks that are meant to ignite the crowd on the dancefloor but also convey messages. For example, her latest Burn the Empire EP is reportedly an empathic and "powerful statement piece seeking to disprove the pervasive belief that womxn and queer people are primarily working and creating music to "empower others"'. The reference here is against the average reaction by the male-dominated press which tends to label womxn-made art indiscriminately as an "outspoken feminist act", hence implying that all non-white-cis-male works should pertain to political ideas of emancipation if they are to be considered 'worthy' and meaningful, and therefore imposing once again their discriminatory/colonial view onto others.

Today, we're very glad to be hosting a mix by Ani Klang on our channels, available from the SoundCloud player at the top, intended to keep on with our tradition of XMAS special episodes to help you cope with the festivities - especially on this very difficult year. Taking around 40 minutes, Ani's selection is another testament to her amazing crossover of genres, from industrial techno to footwork, electro, bounce, down to a few xmas-themed gems that tap into Ani's open-mindedness and sense of irony she's been carrying since her first productions, well accompanied by the urge of set the dancefloor on fire with the hardest club anthems.
