Komeng								Mokale Koapeng
Commissioned by New Music Indaba with financial assistance from Distell Foundation for the performing arts.

Koapeng uses subtle yet haunting string sounds and effects to evoke the world of the uhadi bow. The most literal of these is a delicate use of col legno . Another feature is an all-pervasive use of triplets versus dotted rhythms in the accompaniment, which creates a slightly uneasy sense of untogetherness. It is based on Nofinishi’s Umyeyezolo, (‘ululation’) – a song for boys’ initiation. 

Mokale Koapeng  studied at Wits in Johannesburg. He is the music director of the SDASA Chorale, who collaborated with the British vocal group I Fagiolini on the album ‘Simunye. He has given masterclasses at the Sibelius Academy (Finland), and is performed internationally.

THE BOW PROJECT
A word on the Bow Project here is necessary as the Koapeng piece was written for it.  The Bow Project was conceived by composer Michael Blake of New Music SA for the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, and was launched in 2002. It has given, and will continue to give, interested composers an opportunity to study, re-imagine and recompose music from one of the greatest traditions of our country, and in particular the music of traditional master musician Nofinishi Dywili. The medium of the string quartet provides a suitable bridge between the world of classical/ new music and that of traditional bow music. The Bow project has also served as a catalyst for many of the participating composers to further explore this medium independently.
